Materials & methods Blood genome-wide DNA methylation and cortisol was measured in the youngest child of 117 women who experienced sexual violence/torture during the Kosovo war. Results Seventy-two percent of women had PTSD symptoms during pregnancy. Their children had higher cortisol levels and differential methylation at candidate genes (NR3C1, HTR3A and BNDF). No methylation differences reached epigenome-wide corrected significance levels. Conclusion Identifying the biological processes whereby the negative effects of trauma are passed across generations and defining groups at high risk is a key step to breaking the intergenerational transmission of the effects of mental disorders.Aim Alcohol intake alters DNA methylation profiles and methylation might mediate the association between alcohol and disease, but limited number of positive CpG sites repeatedly replicated. Materials & methods In total, 57 monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs discordant for alcohol drinking from the Chinese National Twin Registry and 158 MZ and dizygotic twin pairs in the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging were evaluated. Results Among candidate CpG sites, cg07326074 was significantly correlated with drinking after adjusting for covariates in MZ twins in both datasets but not in the entire sample or dizygotic twins. Conclusion The hypermethylation of cg07326074, located in the tumor-promoting gene C16orf59, was associated with alcohol consumption.Anatomic variants in the right atrium are under-recognized and under-reported phenomena in cardiac imaging. In the fetus, right atrium serves as a conduit for oxygenated blood to be delivered to the left heart bypassing the right ventricle and the nonfunctional lungs. The anatomy in the fetal right atrium is designed for such purposeful circulation. The right and left venous valves are prominent structures in the fetal heart that direct inferior vena caval flow towards the foramen ovale. These anatomic structures typically regress and the foramen ovale closes after birth. However, the venous valves can persist leading to a range of anatomic, physiological, and pathological consequences in the adult. We describe various presentations of persistent venous valves, focusing on the right venous valve in this illustrated multimodality imaging article.
Adjuvant breast cancer therapy containing anthracyclines with or without anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 antibodies and radiotherapy is associated with cancer treatment-related cardiac dysfunction. In the PRADA trial (Prevention of Cardiac Dysfunction During Adjuvant Breast Cancer Therapy), concomitant treatment with the angiotensin receptor blocker candesartan attenuated the reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in women receiving treatment for breast cancer, whereas the β-blocker metoprolol attenuated the increase in cardiac troponins. This study aimed to assess the long-term effects of candesartan and metoprolol or their combination to prevent a reduction in cardiac function and myocardial injury.

In this 2×2 factorial, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, single-center trial, patients with early breast cancer were assigned to concomitant treatment with candesartan cilexetil, metoprolol succinate, or matching placebos. Target doses were 32 and 100 mg, respectivelcular end-diastolic volume and preserved global longitudinal strain. These results suggest that a broadly administered cardioprotective approach may not be required in most patients with early breast cancer without preexisting cardiovascular disease. Background and aims a poor nutritional status may worsen the prognosis of stroke. We assessed which factors were associated with a worse nutritional status in patients with stroke at the time of hospitalization. Methods a cross-sectional study in patients with stroke needing enteral nutritional support, from January 2014 to September 2016. Nutritional status was evaluated by the Mini-Nutritional Assessment tool, and the Subjective Global Assessment. We performed a multivariate regression analysis including demographic, baseline disability (modified Rankin scale), and clinical and anthropometric variables, and we stratified the sample based on median age. Results we included 226 patients, 58.3 % male, with a median age of 77 (66.7-83) years. Forty-four percent were at risk of malnutrition, and 24 % were malnourished. The factors that were associated with a worse nutritional status were age (odds ratio (OR) 1.03; 95 % CI 1.01-1.08) and modified Rankin scale score (OR 1.96; 95 % CI 1.32-2.67). In the stratifieization. In elderly patients, the main factor was prior functional status, while in younger patients it was a prior history of ischemic events.The adequate manipulation of nanometer-scale building blocks using dispersion systems is regarded as a fundamental technique to fabricate elaborate microstructures. Although a liquid flow with evaporation is generally regarded as an essential factor for the self-assembly of floating blocks, experimental evidence has not been sufficient to clarify the importance of the flow in the dispersion systems. In the present study, 2D nematic layers of sterically stabilized nanoscale calcite rods were achieved in a millimeter-scale region on a solid substrate via the very slow recession of an organic dispersion with evaporation. 2D random arrays of the nanorods were obtained via recession of the liquid in the same system without evaporation. When the nanorods were not sterically stabilized, 3D random arrays were formed even with evaporation. We demonstrated that the evaporation-driven flow of sterically stabilized nanorods to a confined space at the air-liquid-solid interface is essential for the formation of 2D nematic structures on a substrate.
