This study provides support that SMT impacts neurophysiological parameters through a segment-dependent neurological reflex pathway, although this do not seem to be a proxy for improvement. This study was limited by the assumption that the applied treatment was sufficient to impact the primary outcome.Summer dormancy is an important stress avoidance mechanism of cool season perennial grasses to persist well under harsh summer conditions. QTL associated with summer-dormancy related traits in tall fescue has significant breeding implications. An F1 pseudo testcross population was developed by crossing a Mediterranean (103-2) to a Continental parent (R43-64). The population was genotyped using 2,000 SSR and DArT markers. Phenotyping was done in growth chambers and in two Oklahoma, USA locations. Total length of R43-64 and 103-2 maps were 1,956 cM and 1,535 cM, respectively. Seventy-seven QTL were identified in the male and 46 in the female parent maps. The phenotypic variability explained by the QTL ranged between 9.91 and 32.67%. Among all the QTL, five summer dormancy related putative QTL were identified in R43-64 linkage groups (LGs) 4, 5, 12, 20 and 22 and two in 103-2 LGs 5 and 17. All the putative summer dormant QTL regions in male map showed pleiotropic responses and epistatic interactions with other summer dormant and stress responsive QTL regions for plant height, new leaf and dry biomass weight. The flanking markers related to the QTL reported in this study will be useful to improve tall fescue persistence in dry areas through marker-assisted breeding.Step-growth and chain-growth are two major families of chemical reactions that result in polymer networks with drastically different physical properties, often referred to as hyper-branched and cross-linked networks. In contrast to step-growth polymerisation, chain-growth forms networks that are history-dependent. Such networks are defined not just by the degree distribution, but also by their entire formation history, which entails a modelling and conceptual challenges. We show that the structure of chain-growth polymer networks corresponds to an edge-coloured random graph with a defined multivariate degree distribution, where the colour labels represent the formation times of chemical bonds. The theory quantifies and explains the gelation in free-radical polymerisation of cross-linked polymers and predicts conditions when history dependance has the most significant effect on the global properties of a polymer network. As such, the edge colouring is identified as the key driver behind the difference in the physical properties of step-growth and chain-growth networks. We expect that this findings will stimulate usage of network science tools for discovery and design of cross-linked polymers.Esophageal adenocarcinoma has few known recurrent mutations and therefore robust, reliable and reproducible patient-specific models are needed for personalized treatment. Patient-derived organoid culture is a strategy that may allow for the personalized study of esophageal adenocarcinoma and the development of personalized induction therapy. We therefore developed a protocol to establish EAC organoids from endoscopic biopsies of naïve esophageal adenocarcinomas. Histologic characterization and molecular characterization of organoids by whole exome sequencing demonstrated recapitulation of the tumors' histology and genomic (~ 60% SNV overlap) characteristics. Drug testing using clinically appropriate chemotherapeutics and targeted therapeutics showed an overlap between the patient's tumor response and the corresponding organoids' response. Furthermore, we identified Barrett's esophagus epithelium as a potential source of organoid culture contamination. In conclusion, organoids can be robustly cultured from endoscopic biopsies of esophageal adenocarcinoma and recapitulate the originating tumor. This model demonstrates promise as a tool to better personalize therapy for esophageal adenocarcinoma patients.Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for tracking glymphatic system transport with paramagnetic contrast such as gadoteric acid (Gd-DOTA) administration into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) requires pre-contrast data for proper quantification. Here we introduce an alternative approach for glymphatic system quantification in the mouse brain via T1 mapping which also captures drainage of Gd-DOTA to the cervical lymph nodes. The Gd-DOTA injection into CSF was performed on the bench after which the mice underwent T1 mapping using a 3D spoiled gradient echo sequence on a 9.4 T MRI. In Ketamine/Xylazine (KX) anesthetized mice, glymphatic transport and drainage of Gd-DOTA to submandibular and deep cervical lymph nodes was demonstrated as 25-50% T1 reductions in comparison to control mice receiving CSF saline. To further validate the T1 mapping approach we also verified increased glymphatic transport of Gd-DOTA transport in mice anesthetized with KX in comparison with ISO. The novel T1 mapping method allows for quantification of glymphatic transport as well as drainage to the deep and superficial cervical lymph nodes. The ability to measure glymphatic transport and cervical lymph node drainage in the same animal longitudinally is advantageous and time efficient and the coupling between the two systems can be studied and translated to human studies.Maximal rate of heart rate (HR) increase (rHRI) as a measure of HR acceleration during the transition from rest to exercise, or during an increase in workload, tracks exercise performance. rHRI assessed at relative rather than absolute workloads may track performance better, and a field test would increase applicability. This study therefore aimed to evaluate the sensitivity of rHRI assessed at individualised relative workloads during treadmill and overground running for tracking exercise performance. learn more Treadmill running performance (5 km time trial; 5TTT) and rHRI were assessed in 11 male runners following 1 week of light training (LT), 2 weeks of heavy training (HT) and a 10-day taper (T). rHRI was the first derivative maximum of a sigmoidal curve fit to HR data collected during 5 min of treadmill running at 65% peak HR (rHRI65%), and subsequent transition to 85% peak HR (rHRI85%). Participants ran at the same speeds overground, paced by a foot-mounted accelerometer. Time to complete 5TTT likely increased following HT (ES = 0.
