This study examines the association between exposure to e-cigarette use on school campus and e-cigarette use behaviors among adolescents in the United States.
Data were obtained from the 2019 National Youth Tobacco Survey. First, two multivariate logistic regression models examined the association between in-school exposure to e-cigarette use and ever and past 30-day (i.e., current) e-cigarette use. Next, a multivariate logistic regression model to examine the relationship between in-school exposure to e-cigarette use and susceptibility to use was conducted among a subsample (n = 11,958) of never e-cigarette users. Covariates included grade, race/ethnicity, marketing exposure, and ever use of other tobacco products.
Approximately 64.3 % of adolescents reported seeing someone use an e-cigarette on school campus; the most common locations being in the bathroom/locker room (34.4 %) and parking lot (34.0 %). In-school exposure to e-cigarette use was associated with greater odds of ever (Adj OR 2.06; 95 % CIw this phenomenon may influence e-cigarette use/susceptibility among youth. The observed relationship highlights the role of schools in the efforts to reduce adolescent e-cigarette use.
The striatum mediates reward processing in addiction, and previous fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) studies have revealed abnormal striatofrontal functional connectivity in heroin addiction. However, little is known about whether there is abnormal structural connectivity of the striatal circuit in heroin addiction. This study investigated the structural connectivity of striatal circuits in abstinent heroin-dependent individuals (HDIs) without methadone treatment.
Forty-three (age 38.8 ± 7.1) male HDIs and twenty-one (age 42.4 ± 7.9) matched healthy controls underwent high-resolution T1 and whole-brain diffusion tensor imaging (64 directions) magnetic resonance imaging. Connectivity-based seed classification probabilistic tractography was used to detect the tract strengths of striatal circuits with 10 a priori target masks. Tract strengths were compared between groups and correlated with impulsivity behavior, evaluated using the Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS), and craving, measured on visual a displayed decreased structural connectivity of the striatum-mOFC circuit and higher impulsivity. Higher impulsive behavior was associated with decreased left striatal circuit connectivity. These findings suggest that the striatal circuit tract strengths might be a novel potential biomarker in heroin and, potentially, general opioid addiction.
Prescription drug (PD) misuse, particularly opioid misuse, is a major US public health concern. While transgender and gender nonbinary (TGNB) individuals experience numerous health disparities, including substance use disparities, little research has focused on PD misuse in this population.
Data for this secondary analysis come from the US Transgender Survey (N = 26,689). First, we examined bivariate differences in past 12-month PD misuse among binary transgender women, binary transgender men, nonbinary individuals assigned-female-at-birth (AFAB), and nonbinary individuals assigned-male-at-birth (AMAB). We then used multivariable logistic regression (separately based on sex-assigned-at-birth) to examine the relationship between gender-identity related discrimination and PD misuse.
PD misuse was significantly more common among binary transgender men (17.3 %), nonbinary AFAB individuals (18.7 %), and nonbinary AMAB individuals (18.0 %); compared to binary transgender women (13.5 %). In multivariable analysuse than binary individuals, possibly due to less societal affirmation. Similar to other TGNB health disparities, discrimination based on gender identity/expression was associated with PD misuse. This highlights the importance of interventions to reduce discrimination against TGNB individuals.
There has been much research on the efficacy and effectiveness of opioid agonist treatment (OAT), but less on its implementation and sustainability. A challenge internationally has been recruiting and retaining prescribers. This paper aims to characterise the prescribers in terms of OAT prescribing behaviours.
Retrospective cohort study in New South Wales, Australia. Participants were 2199 OAT prescribers between 1 st August 2001-19th September 2018.We examined trends in initiation and cessation of OAT prescribers. Adjusted hazard ratios were calculated to estimate prescriber retention, adjusting for year of initiation, practice type, client load and treatment prescribed.
The rate of prescribers ceasing OAT prescribing has been increasing over time a prescriber who initiated between 2016-2017 had over four times the risk of cessation compared with one who initiated before 2001, AHR 4.77; [3.67-6.21]. The highest prescriber cessation rate was in prescribers who had prescribed for shorter time periods. Thention and broaden the base of doctors involved in such prescribing.
Previous research links cigarette use and marijuana use in adolescence with the use of other illicit substances. Limited research, however, has explored whether vaping nicotine and marijuana, along with using these substances through multiple modes of delivery (traditional cigarette/marijuana use and vaping) is associated with the use of other illicit substances in adolescence.
This study addresses this gap in the literature by employing negative binomial regression to examine the relationships between three categories of nicotine users (traditional cigarettes only, nicotine vaping only, and dual mode nicotine use), three categories of marijuana users (traditional marijuana use only, marijuana vaping only, and dual mode marijuana use), and the use of other illicit substances in a sample of Florida middle school and high school students.
Our findings reveal that nicotine vaping and dual mode use of both nicotine and marijuana are associated with the use of a greater variety of illicit substances compared to non-users.
In conclusion, our findings suggest that dual mode use of nicotine and marijuana are associated with greater likelihood of using other illicit substances. Bempedoic The implications of these findings for future research are discussed.
