Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots, also referred to as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to allow parents to rest close to their babies at night, without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby will be ready to transition to the bed.
Mehack Mehack, an MFM home tester, was impressed by the feature that this model comes with a bassinet that can be used all around the house. It also has a manual rocking feature. It was easy to assemble, and it came with a travel bag.
Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are smaller than. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However they are typically used by children up to the age of three. If you're looking for a wooden cot, you'll find two sizes available that are large and standard both of which will convert into a toddler bed or cot bed. If you want your child (or children) to be comfortable sleeping in a larger cot, it's an excellent idea to choose the larger one.
MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved that the bedside cot was a little bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for the space of her baby's. Jasmine says it's easy to lift the baby into and out of the cot during evening feedings or to soothe and that it's quality is better than other cots she has seen that are less sturdy.
Emily, another home-based tester, is thrilled by the flexibility of the Maxi-Cosi lora that is a lift-off, portable bassinet. It also is a rock. It also has a reflux incline and a machine washable liner that breathes. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Contrary to some International or European cot brands, the Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't need to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. However, it will require a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the perfect mattress for your cot.
Height
When choosing a bedside cot be sure to choose one that can be elevated to a level that is comfortable for you to feed your the baby. It should also be able to be lowered to the ground so that you can lift your baby closer to you for night feeds or to soothe. This feature is especially useful when you are recovering from a C section. For instance, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to an elevation of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
You should also think about the level you'd like the base of your crib to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their babies from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest point and others prefer a higher elevation to give them greater stability. One of our mom testers said that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It comes with an easily collapsible side that which you can use to press of one button.
Keep in mind that a bassinet or bedside sleeping device should only be used when your baby can hold his head up with no assistance, which is usually at around 6 months. This is due to the risk of being suffocated. It's also important to note that if you choose a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a crib and vice versa, you must start removing the sides when your child is ready for this, so that they don't get out of bed or get out of the bed.
Design
There are many different styles of bedside crib, ranging from simple to luxurious. The more luxurious options may include features like a built-in night light or a soothing center that plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibrations to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or an adjustable base that allows you to easily get your baby's food in the right place. You may also find some models which can be made into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) which is ideal when your child is ready to transition to a larger bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance was awarded Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It is a swivelling base that allows you to pick up your baby and transfer them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of bed. This is ideal for new mums who are recovering from Caesarean or require the bed for extended periods of time. Jasmine, a MFM mother who tested the product at home, stated that it was easy to use and made it easier to reach her baby, especially after a C-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It has a machine-washable interior, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit larger than the other bedside cribs we tested but it folds flat into its bag for travel, so it's relatively compact when not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester Also, she acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She said it was designed for both parents and babies. best bedside cot uk Cots 4 Tots is lightweight and easy to move. The swivelling base of the bassinet is amazing as it means you can move the bassinet from side to side, and one of its sides can be let down to facilitate access - particularly for new mums who are recovering from c-sections,' she said.
Safety
The most important safety characteristic of a bedside cot is that it is able to be adjusted or moved to allow parents to reach their child when they require to feed them, comfort them or change their nappy. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from a c-section. You should choose an option that lets you lower the bed's side with a simple button press. This will allow you to easily lift your child without getting out of bed. This is essential, especially as your baby grows and becomes more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation such as pillowcases and duvets, which can cause your baby to overheat.
The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing components (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance they would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements weren't practical or effective in reducing the amount of instances where infants are trapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.
Many of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted to other types of use, such as play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC add an alternative clause to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use that would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using a removable attachment. The attachment can be permanently connected or removed when the item is not being used as a baby bassinet.
The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will take into account these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to come out in November 2021.
