Fluoride (F) is largely employed in dentistry, in therapeutic doses, to control caries. However, excessive intake may lead to adverse effects in the body. Since F is absorbed mostly from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), gastrointestinal symptoms are the first signs following acute F exposure. Nevertheless, little is known about the mechanistic events that lead to these symptoms. Therefore, the present study evaluated changes in the proteomic profile as well as morphological changes in the jejunum and ileum of rats upon acute exposure to F. Male rats received, by gastric gavage, a single dose of F containing 0 (control) or 25 mg/Kg for 30 days. Upon exposure to F, there was a decrease in the thickness of the tunic muscularis for both segments and a decrease in the thickness of the wall only for the ileum. In addition, a decrease in the density of HuC/D-IR neurons and nNOS-IR neurons was found for the jejunum, but for the ileum only nNOS-IR neurons were decreased upon F exposure. Moreover, SP-IR varicosities were increased in both segments, while VIP-IR varicosities were increased in the jejunum and decreased in the ileum. As for the proteomic analysis, the proteins with altered expression were mostly negatively regulated and associated mainly with protein synthesis and energy metabolism. Proteomics also revealed alterations in proteins involved in oxidative/antioxidant defense, apoptosis and as well as in cytoskeletal proteins. Our results, when analyzed together, suggest that the gastrointestinal symptoms found in cases of acute F exposure might be related to the morphological alterations in the gut (decrease in the thickness of the tunica muscularis) that, at the molecular level, can be explained by alterations in the gut vipergic innervation and in proteins that regulate the cytoskeleton. As an important part of the riparian zone, bars are an important barrier for the interception of phosphorus (P) originated from leaching and runoff. The spatial variation in P as well as the influence of factors on the said spatial variation in mountainous river (Lingshan River) bars was investigated. A total of 100 soil samples were collected from 11 sampling sites. Soil total phosphorus (TP) and soil available P were determined to explore the spatial variation of soil P in mountainous river bars. One-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analyses, stepwise multiple linear regressions and curve fitting were used to explore the dominant factors affecting the spatial variation of soil P in mountainous river bars. Affected by erosion effect of flowing water, the TP of the bar soils decreased in the longitudinal direction, the TP and available P of the bar soils increased in the cross-sectional direction and the variation in TP between the surface and deep soils firstly increased and then decreased as the height of the bar above the water surface increased. The stronger the erosion effect of flowing water, the more P releases to the water, which may cause the spatial variation of soil P in mountainous river bars, and the results of this study facilitated control of non-point source pollution in mountainous river and restoration of the ecosystems in mountainous river bars.In this study, two iron-based metal-organic framework compounds (MOFs), were used and compared as catalysts for persulfate (PS) activation to degrade bisphenol F (BPF). The outstanding advantage of using amino-functionalized MOFs in the catalytic system was verified under different reaction conditions, and the mechanism was explored. The results indicated that NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/PS system not only had a wide pH application range, but also possessed an excellent catalytic performance towards interference from the coexisting anions and humic acid. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that, compared with MIL-101(Fe), the -NH2 modification could significantly improve the electronic conductivity of NH2-MIL-101(Fe) by enhancing its Fermi level (-4.28 eV) and binding energy to PS (-1.19 eV). Azeliragon cost The free radical quenching experiments were combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) confirmed that free radicals (SO4-, OH, O2-) worked together with the non-radical (1O2) reaction to remove 91% BPF within 40 min in the NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/PS system. The two proposed BPF degradation pathway were related to hydroxylation, oxidation and ring cracking. The toxicity of the BPF degradation intermediates as well as its final products were also evaluated.
A number of studies have shown that cold has an important impact on human health. However, almost no studies focused on cold warning systems to prevent those health effects. For Nordic regions, like the province of Quebec in Canada, winter is long and usually very cold with an observed increase in mortality and hospitalizations throughout the season. However, there is no existing system specifically designed to follow in real-time this mortality increase throughout the season and to alert public health authorities prior to cold waves.
The aim is to establish a watch and warning system specifically for health impacts of cold, applied to different climatic regions of the province of Quebec.
A methodology previously used to establish the health-heat warning system in Quebec is adapted to cold. The approach identifies cold weather indicators and establishes thresholds related to extreme over-mortality or over-hospitalization events in the province of Quebec, Canada.
The final health-related thresholds proealth watch and warning system with valid indicators and thresholds for each climatic region of Quebec. It can be seen as a complementary system to the existing one for heat warnings, in order to help the public health authorities to be well prepared during an extreme cold event.Agriculture is the backbone of most sub-Saharan Africa economies, but environmental quality, so vital for agricultural production, is being challenged by climate change. However, most studies measure environmental quality using one variable, CO2 emissions. In this study, a more enhanced measure of environmental quality, which incorporates three indicators (per capita CO2 emissions, energy intensity and adjusted national savings), is used. A set of second-generation panel data techniques that address some potentially crucial panel data estimation issues such as cross sectional dependence and cross country heterogeneity, are employed. Data on 24 sub-Saharan Africa countries over the period 1984 to 2016 were analysed. The impact on agricultural productivity of two of the three indicators of environmental quality, namely CO2 emissions and adjusted national savings, has expected signs, negative and positive, respectively. Estimates using different methods suggest a detrimental effect of per capita CO2 emissions on agricultural productivity in sub-Saharan Africa.
