This part of the review aims to reduce the start-up burden of data collection and descriptive analytics for statistical modeling and route optimization of risk associated with motor vehicles. From a data-driven bibliometric analysis, we show that the literature is divided into two disparate research streams (a) predictive or explanatory models that attempt to understand and quantify crash risk based on different driving conditions, and (b) optimization techniques that focus on minimizing crash risk through route/path-selection and rest-break scheduling. Translation of research outcomes between these two streams is limited. To overcome this issue, we present publicly available high-quality data sources (different study designs, outcome variables, and predictor variables) and descriptive analytic techniques (data summarization, visualization, and dimension reduction) that can be used to achieve safer-routing and provide code to facilitate data collection/exploration by practitioners/researchers. Then, we review the statistical and machine learning models used for crash risk modeling. We show that (near) real-time crash risk is rarely considered, which might explain why the optimization models (reviewed in Part 2) have not capitalized on the research outcomes from the first stream. This paper presents a star-tracking algorithm to determine the accurate global orientation of autonomous platforms such as nano satellites, U A V s, and micro-drones using commercial-off-the-shelf ( C O T S ) mobile devices such as smartphones. Such star-tracking is especially challenging because it is based on existing cameras which capture a partial view of the sky and should work continuously and autonomously. The novelty of the proposed framework lies both in the computational efficiency and the ability of the star-tracker algorithm to cope with noisy measurements and outliers using affordable C O T S mobile platforms. The presented algorithm was implemented and tested on several popular platforms including Android mobile devices, commercial-micro drones, and Raspberry Pi. The expected accuracy of the reported orientation is [0.1°,0.5°].A wide range of frogs produce skin poisons composed of bioactive peptides for defence against pathogens, parasites and predators. While several frog families have been thoroughly screened for skin-secreted peptides, others, like the Microhylidae, have remained mostly unexplored. Previous studies of microhylids found no evidence of peptide secretion, suggesting that this defence adaptation was evolutionarily lost. selleck products We conducted transcriptome analyses of the skins of Phrynomantis bifasciatus and Phrynomantis microps, two African microhylid species long suspected to be poisonous. Our analyses reveal 17 evolutionary related transcripts that diversified from to those of cytolytic peptides found in other frog families. The 19 peptides predicted to be processed from these transcripts, named phrynomantins, show a striking structural diversity that is distinct from any previously identified frog skin peptide. Functional analyses of five phrynomantins confirm the loss of a cytolytic function and the absence of insecticidal or proinflammatory activity, suggesting that they represent an evolutionary transition to a new, yet unknown function. Our study shows that peptides have been retained in the defence poison of at least one microhylid lineage and encourages research on similarly understudied taxa to further elucidate the diversity and evolution of skin defence molecules. The application of a simple blood test to predict prognosis in acute heart failure (AHF) patients is not well established. Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is inexpensive and easy to obtain in hospitalized patients using a routine blood test. We evaluate the prognostic implications of NLR as an independent predictor of in-hospital and long-term mortality in AHF patients. Among 5625 patients enrolled in the Korean Acute Heart Failure registry, 5580 patients were classified into quartiles by their NLR level, and analyzed for in-hospital and post-discharge three-year mortality. Patients in the highest NLR quartile had the highest in-hospital and post-discharge three-year mortality. The same results were seen by dividing the aggravating factor into the infection or ischemia group and the non-infection or non-ischemia group. For patients aggravated from infection or ischemia, a cut-off NLR value was 7.0 that increase the risk of in-hospital and post-discharge three-year mortality. In subgroups of patients not aggravated from infection or ischemia, a cut-off NLR value was 5.0 that increase the risk of in-hospital and post discharge three-year mortality. Elevated NLR in AHF patients at the index hospitalization is an independent predictor for in-hospital and post-discharge three-year mortality. Taken together, NLR is a marker for risk assessment of AHF patients.LAP2-Emerin-MAN1 (LEM) domain-containing proteins represent an abundant group of inner nuclear membrane proteins involved in diverse nuclear functions, but their functional redundancies remain unclear. Here, using the biotinylation-dependent proximity approach, we report proteome-wide comparative interactome analysis of the two structurally related LEM proteins MAN1 (LEMD3) and LEM2 (LEMD2), and the more distantly related emerin (EMD). While over 60% of the relatively small group of MAN1 and emerin interactors were also found in the LEM2 interactome, the latter included a large number of candidates (>85%) unique for LEM2. The interacting partners unique for emerin support and provide further insight into the previously reported role of emerin in centrosome positioning, and the MAN1-specific interactors suggest a role of MAN1 in ribonucleoprotein complex assembly. Interestingly, the LEM2-specific interactome contained several proteins of the nucleotide excision repair pathway. Accordingly, LEM2-depleted cells, but not MAN1- and emerin-depleted cells, showed impaired proliferation following ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation and prolonged accumulation of γH2AX, similar to cells deficient in the nucleotide excision repair protein DNA damage-binding protein 1 (DDB1). These findings indicate impaired DNA damage repair in LEM2-depleted cells. Overall, this interactome study identifies new potential interaction partners of emerin, MAN1 and particularly LEM2, and describes a novel potential involvement of LEM2 in nucleotide excision repair at the nuclear periphery.
