A Intermediate Guide To Large Bedside Cot
Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their baby at night without risk of SIDS. However, they are only suitable for use up to 6 months, when your baby is required to be moved into a cot, or a moses basket.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, was impressed by the feature that this model comes with a bassinet that can be used throughout the home. It also has the ability to rock manually. It was easy to set up, and it came with a travel bag.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. They can also be converted into toddler beds, while the cot beds are typically used for up to three years. older. If you're considering a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes to choose from - standard and large - both of which convert into a cot bed/toddler beds. If you wish for your child (or children) to be able to sleep in the larger cot, it's an excellent idea to choose the larger one.

MFM mum home test Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was slightly larger than the Moses basket, but not too big for her baby's room. It's easy to carry her child in and out for feeding or calming and that the quality is excellent in comparison to other cots she's seen that feel flimsy.

Another home-based tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's rocking too. It also has a reflux incline option and a machine-washable liner that breathes. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Contrary to some International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. However, it requires an exclusive bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.

Height

When choosing a bedside cot, look for one that can be raised to a level that is comfortable for feeding your the baby. It also needs to be able to be dropped to the ground to allow you to lift your baby up towards you for feedings at night or for soothing. This feature is especially helpful in the event of recovering from a C-section. The Next2me cot and the Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to the maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the base of your cot. Some moms find it is easier to lift their children from standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest point, while some prefer a higher elevation to give them greater stability. One of our mom testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It has an easy-to-fold side that you can push at the push of the button.

Keep in mind that a bedside or bassinet should only be used until your baby can hold their head up without assistance typically about 6 months. This is due to the possibility of being suffocated. It is also important to remember that if you select a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can convert into a cot and vice versa, you must begin removing the sides once your child is able to do this to ensure that they don't climb out or get out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of cribs that are bedside, ranging from basic to lavish. The most luxurious models could include features like a built-in nightlight, a soothing centre that plays sounds and music and offers two levels of vibrations to help soothe your baby to sleep, or the swivelling base which allows you to easily reach your child for feedings. Some models can be transformed into the toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.

For example the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that allows you to take your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This makes it ideal for new mums who are recovering from Caesareans or who need to stay in bed for longer durations of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying that it was simple to use and made her baby much easier - especially after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit larger than other cribs for bed we've looked at, but it folds flat into its travel bag so it's relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mom home test Leya also appreciated the function of this bedside crib explaining how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It is very easy to move and extremely sturdy. She also said that the swivelling bassinet base was fantastic because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to make access easier, especially for new mums recovering from c-sections.

Safety

The main safety aspect of a large bedside cot is that it can be raised or lowered to enable parents to reach their child when they require to feed, comfort them, or change their nappy. This makes it ideal for mothers who are recovering from a c-section. You should look for a design which lets you lower the bed's side with a single button press. This allows you to lift your child up without having to get out of bed. This is essential, especially when your baby grows and becomes more mobile. Do not add anything that may increase the chance of injury or suffocation such as pillowcases and duvets, which can cause your baby to overheat.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of imposing additional requirements for sleepers in bed, such as the requirement that these beds satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at least meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. However the CPSC found that these requirements are not feasible or effective to reduce the number of incidents in which infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

4-in-1 bedside crib of the incidents reported in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses that can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC add an alternative option to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside sleepers that would allow them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable. Attachments can be permanently fixed or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is reviewing these comments as well as other submissions received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will be examining these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be issued in November of 2021.
