A novel and highly sensitive tablet-based colorimetric sensor is developed for the detection of phosphate (Pi) in drinking and surface water using mercaptoacetic acid-capped gold nanoparticles (MA-AuNPs). Characterization of AuNPs and MA-AuNPs was achieved by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Dynamic light scattering (DLS). The principle of this sensor is based on the aggregation and disaggregation mechanisms of AuNPs that result in a color change from blue to red due to the surface plasmon resonance effect, where europium ions (Eu3+) act as the aggregating agent. Herein, dextran is used to encapsulate the Eu3+ ions into a tablet format to make the detection system user friendly. Hence, the sensor only requires dissolving a Eu3+-dextran tablet into the water sample and subsequently adding MA-AuNPs for the colorimetric quantification of phosphate. This assay is very sensitive with a calculated detection limit of 0.3 μg L-1 and an upper detection limit of 26 μg L-1, while 10 μg L-1 is the allowable limit of Pi in drinking water. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/l-alpha-phosphatidylcholine.html A comparative study with a conventional Hach kit confirmed the accuracy of our sensor. Also, real water samples from river, lake, and tap sources were tested to examine the sensor's applicability towards commercialization. The assay did not interfere with common ions in water, thus being Pi-specific, and the performance of the assay was stable for up to at least three weeks. Overall, our new approach provides a simple, stable, rapid, low-cost and promising device for Pi detection in water.Recently cycloarene has been experimentally obtained in a self-assembled structure, forming graphene-like monoatomic layered systems. Here, we established bandgap engineering/prediction in cycloarene assemblies within a combination of density functional theory and tight-binding Hamiltonians. Our results show that the inter-molecule bond density rules the bandgap. The increase in such bond density increases the valence/conduction bandwidth decreasing the energy gap linearly. We derived an effective model that allows the interpretation of the arising energy gap for general particle-hole symmetric molecular arrangements based on inter-molecular bond strength. The synthesis and characterization of Fe, Co and Ni complexes supported by silylene ligands in the past ten years are summarized. Due to the decrease of the electron cloud density on the Si atom after coordination, the downfield shift of the 29Si chemical shift is accompanied by the coordination between the free silylene ligand and metal. The strong electron-donating ability of silylene makes the metal center more electron-rich, which is conducive to the oxidative addition reaction in the metal center. In some cases, the coordination ability of silylene is stronger than those of phosphine and carbene ligands. Therefore, silylene transition metal complexes have better catalytic activity. The further challenges in this field are to develop new polydentate silylene ligands, synthesize chelate silylene-phosphine and silylene-carbene ligands, and design new silylene transition metal complexes for more catalytic research.
Rectal cuff and anal transitional zone neoplasia is an increasing challenge in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis who have undergone restorative proctocolectomy. Its real incidence, range of severity, and treatment efficacy are poorly documented.
We sought to document the evolution of rectal cuff and anal transitional zone neoplasia and describe its management.
This is a retrospective cohort study collecting prospectively recorded data.
This study involved a hereditary colorectal cancer group in a large academic medical center.
All patients undergoing primary restorative proctocolectomy at this institution were included.
Surveillance pouchoscopy and treatment of rectal cuff/anal transitional zone neoplasia were performed.
The primary outcomes measured were the presence and the severity of rectal cuff/anal transitional zone neoplasia. Excision by cautery, snare, mucosectomy, or redo pouch was evaluated.
A total of 165 patients were included 52% were male (86/165) with a median age at IQR 2,4, 8,9). (Traducción-Dr. Lisbeth Alarcon-Bernes).
Over the last decade utilization of laparoscopy for the treatment of colon cancer has been variable despite evidence of benefit; possibly reflecting surgeon expertise, rather than other factors.
To examine the spatial variation in the use of laparoscopy for colon cancer surgery and determine what factors may influence utilization.
Population-based retrospective analysis from April 2008 - March 2015.
All Canadian provinces (excluding Quebec).
All patients ≥18 years undergoing elective colectomy for colon cancer.
The primary outcome was laparoscopy utilization rates. Predictors of use included patient and disease characteristics, year of surgery, rurality, hospital and surgeon volumes, and distance from a colorectal fellowship training center.
A total of 34,725 patients were identified, 42% underwent laparoscopic surgery. Significant spatial variations in laparoscopy-use were identified, with 95% of high-use clusters located ≤100 km, and 98% of low-use clusters located >100 km, from a colorectaients based solely on location. See Video Abstract at http//links.lww.com/DCR/B595.
Significant spatial variations in the use of laparoscopy for colon cancer surgery exists. After adjusting for patient and system factors, proximity to a colorectal fellowship training center remained a strong predictor of laparoscopy use. There remain regional variations in colon cancer treatment, with discrepancies in the surgical care offered to Canadian patients based solely on location.
