Key issues that confronted the COVID-19 response in critical care units at NYU Langone Health included communication, patient and staff safety. The Greater Boston Nursing Collective, a consortium composed of university nursing deans and chief nursing officers within academic medical centers and specialty hospitals in Boston, Massachusetts, was formed in 2014. Since the group's inception, our mission has been to create and reinforce whole-person/whole-system healing environments to improve the health of all communities. Through our collaboration in navigating the dual epidemics of COVID-19 and structural racism within our respective organizations, and across the United States and the world, we share experiences and lessons learned. Our common mission is clearer than ever to create safe and joyful work environments, to protect the dignity of those we are privileged to serve, and to generate policies to advance health equity to rectify societal forces that have shaped this dual epidemic. We are humbled by the many who persist despite limited rest and respite, and whose stories, innovations, and leadership we are honored to witness and share. They have defined our generation, just as nurses in earlier crises have done leading through service to others as our purpose and privilege.Nursing regulation is a specialty area of nursing practice that some may perceive as only performing licensing and disciplinary functions. However, highly effective boards strive to meet their mission of public protection through continuous innovation. This article describes several innovative programs initiated by a board of nursing. Among the examples include regulatory waivers during the pandemic, collaborations with stakeholder organizations, a resource for nursing peer-review committees, and an alternative remediation option for practice breakdown. With strong leadership and committed teams, regulation can both protect the public and play a part in actualizing the value of nursing. With increasing demands and diminishing nurse resources in the health care landscape today, it is even more important for health care leaders to understand the value that meaningful recognition brings to their organizations. Meaningful recognition is an integral component of a healthy work environment, supporting nurse satisfaction and the patient experience. The DAISY Award as a form of meaningful recognition for the past 21 years is an evidence-based practice used in more than 4600 health care organizations worldwide. NSC 2382 mouse This article discusses the evidence and provides a case study for the application of The DAISY Award as a value-added strategic tool for health care leaders and their organizations.Multiple articles have explained the benefits of nurses as hospital board members. The Nurses on Boards Coalition has been working for several years to increase the number of nurse board members. Yet, the percentage of hospital and health care board positions filled by nurses has been decreasing. This article shares what all nurse leaders can do to increase the visibility of nurses as competent, valuable voices at the board table.First-time success rate on the NCLEX-RN examination has significant implications for BSN students, faculty, and schools of nursing. Many nursing programs utilize standardized examinations such as the HESI Exit Exam to quantify student success on knowledge of nursing concepts and to prepare students for success on the NCLEX-RN. Nursing faculty must be able to identify predictors of student success early in the nursing program in order to offer appropriate support and remediation. The purpose of this retrospective, correlational study was to determine predictive variables of BSN student success on the HESI Exit Exam in a southeastern university. Students who reported higher test anxiety scored significantly lower on the HESI Exit Exam. Higher medical-surgical I HESI examination scores, higher medical-surgical II HESI examination scores, higher obstetrics HESI examination scores, and higher final grade point average were significant predictors of students' HESI Exit Exam scores and accounted for 39% of the variance in the scores. Results from this study suggest implementing remediation based on HESI Specialty Exam scores and interventions aimed at reducing test anxiety.Clinical trials are exploratory in nature and thus present a degree of risk for those individuals who participate in the trial. Risks include adverse events, which are undesirable experiences that arise from use of investigational products or devices that may cause participant injury or withdrawal from the clinical trial. The prevention of adverse events is a challenge given the lack of interoperability among organizational electronic health records and reliance on wallet cards to communicate safety-related information, leaving the burden of describing research-related information to external providers on the trial participant. This potential for ineffective communication propagates further risk of contraindicated medication administration and misaligned care management, which can negatively impact the trial participant's opportunity to safely engage in novel therapeutic research. This pilot, qualitative descriptive study explores a mobile, low-technology solution in the form of a wearable universal serial bus device to house deidentified, critical research-related information for clinical trial participants to wear and give external providers such that trial constraints on care management are effectively communicated. Eight participants wore a commercial universal serial bus device for 72 hours and described the meaning surrounding the participants' daily wearing of the universal serial bus bracelet via semistructured interviews. Four themes emerged application to clinical trial participants, societal perception of wearing device, healthcare operations/workflow impact, and wearability of the universal serial bus device. Thematic findings included recommendations for device design improvements as well as key considerations for provider identification of the device.Virtual simulation as an emerging nursing pedagogy can facilitate optimal learning through the use of experiential learning and technology. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to assess the long-term effects of virtual simulation on undergraduate nursing students' recognition of and causative beliefs about depression and schizophrenia. Students' responses from the simulation cohort (n = 149) and the nonsimulation cohort (n = 150) at a school of nursing in the United States were compared. While students' responses were fairly similar between the two cohorts, students who received virtual simulations more often rated character weakness as an unlikely cause for schizophrenia than those who did not receive virtual simulations. The major difference supports the use of virtual simulation in influencing positive changes in nursing students' perceptions and attitudes toward mental illness.
