There were no significant differences in the overall incidence of postoperative complications among patients treated preoperatively with vedolizumab, anti-TNFs, or no biologics (44% vs. 45% vs. 37%; p = 0.67). Although there was no significant difference between patient cohorts in infectious complications (p = 0.20), postoperative ileus (POI) was significantly more common among the vedolizumab group (n = 9; 36%) compared to anti-TNF (n = 12; 16%) or no biologics (n = 5; 9%) (p = 0.01). Multivariable analysis showed that vedolizumab treatment prior to surgery was an independent risk factor for POI (OR 5.16, 95% CI; 1.71-15.52; p = .004). CONCLUSION Although preoperative vedolizumab exposure did not influence the rate of overall 30-day postoperative complications, vedolizumab tends to increase incidence of POI.BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the role of lncRNA MAGI2-AS3 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS Expression levels of MAGI2-AS3 and RECK mRNA in two types of tissues (non-tumor and NCSLC) were measured by qPCR. BI-2852 chemical structure To further investigate the interaction between MAGI2-AS3 and RECK, MAGI2-AS3 and RECK expression vectors were transfected into H1993 cells. RESULTS We found that MAGI2-AS3 and RECK were upregulated and positively correlated in NSCLC. In NSCLC cells, MAGI2-AS3 overexpression led to upregulated RECK. Bioinformatics analysis showed that MAGI2-AS3 may bind miR-25, which can directly target RECK. In NSCLC cells, miR-25 overexpression led to downregulated RECK and attenuated the effects of MAGI2-AS3 overexpression, while MAGI2-AS3 and miR-25 failed to affect each other. Cell invasion and migration analysis showed decreased NSCLC cell invasion and migration rates after MAGI2-AS3 and RECK overexpression. MiR-25 showed opposite role and reduced the effects of MAGI2-AS3 overexpression. CONCLUSION Therefore, MAGI2-AS3 may sponge miR-25 to upregulate RECK, thereby inhibiting NSCLC cell invasion and migration. Hypertension is the leading risk factor for premature death and disability worldwide, and it is the leading risk factor for mortality from cardiovascular diseases worldwide. The data on hypertension in Sudan that has been published is limited. We conducted this study to assess the prevalence of hypertension and its associated risk factors. METHODS A multistage sampling survey was conducted in Gadarif, Eastern Sudan, from January to May 2018 to investigate the prevalence of hypertension and associated factors in adults in Eastern Sudan. The World Health Organization (WHO) three-level stepwise approach questionnaire was used to gather sociodemographic characteristics (age, sex, height, weight marital status, education level, smoking habit, alcohol consumption habit, and family history of hypertension). Hypertension was defined as the presence of an average blood pressure of ≥140/90 mmHg or the reported use of anti-hypertensive medications for high blood pressure. RESULTS A total of 600 participants (mean age 44.9 years) were enrolled in this study. Four hundred twenty-two (70.3%) participants were women, and 196 (32.7%) participants were obese. Of the 600 enrolled participants, 245 (40.8%) individuals had hypertension, 44 (7.3%) had been previously diagnosed with hypertension, and 201 (33.5%) were newly diagnosed with hypertension. A logistic regression analysis showed no significant associations across the education level, marital status, overweight and hypertension factors. However, an older age (adjusted OR = 3.20, 95% CI = 2.28-4.51, P less then 0.001) and obesity (adjusted OR = 2.41, 95% CI = 1.57-3.69, P less then 0.001) were associated with the presence of hypertension. CONCLUSION There is a high rate of hypertension in Eastern Sudan, especially among older and obese individuals. Preventive measures, such as dietary measures, should be implemented.BACKGROUND Factors associated with reduced daily physical activity (DPA) in patients with COPD are still controversial. Physical inactivity in COPD increases risk of cardiovascular disease, frequent exacerbations, reduced health status, and increased symptoms. We hypothesised that reduced DPA in patients with COPD is independent of traditional risk factors including age and spirometry. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, DPA (over 7 days) was assessed on 88 community stable patients with COPD and 40 controls free from cardiorespiratory disease. Spirometry, body composition, number of exacerbations, handgrip strength (HGS), modified Medical Research Council (mMRC), arterial stiffness, 6-min walking distance (6MWD) and BODE index were also determined. Frequent exacerbation was defined as ≥2 and non-frequent exacerbation 0.05. The level of breathlessness was superior to lung function in predicting the level of DPA. CONCLUSION The level of DPA in COPD was independent of traditional risk factors. Breathlessness score is a better predictor of the DPA than lung function and handgrip strength.BACKGROUND Over the last decades, due to high rates of immigration, many high-income countries have witnessed demographic shifts towards more cultural diversity in the population. Socio-economic deprivation and traumatic experiences pre-migration contribute to a high risk for mental health problems among immigrant background youth. Moreover, when adapting to the multi-cultural contexts of the resettlement countries they face several acculturation demands, which may also affect their mental health in adaptive or hazardous ways. One of these acculturation tasks involves developing the cultural competence necessary to thrive and participate socially within the heritage and the majority cultural domains. From a public mental health perspective, it is important to have thorough knowledge about acculturation-related risk and protective factors. However, this responsibility has been challenged by a lack of acculturation measures that are theoretically linked to mental health, and target the cultural competencies of immigrant background youth.
