Medusozoans, the Cnidarian subphylum, have multiple life stages including sessile polyps and free-swimming medusae or jellyfish, which are typically bell-shaped gelatinous zooplanktons that exhibit diverse morphologies. Despite having a relatively complex body structure with well-developed muscles and nervous systems, the adult medusa stage maintains a high regenerative ability that enables organ regeneration as well as whole body reconstitution from the part of the body. This remarkable regeneration potential of jellyfish has long been acknowledged in different species; however, recent studies have begun dissecting the exact processes underpinning regeneration events. In this article, we introduce the current understanding of regeneration mechanisms in medusae, particularly focusing on cellular behaviors during regeneration such as wound healing, blastema formation by stem/progenitor cells or cell fate plasticity, and the organism-level patterning that restores radial symmetry. We also discuss putative molecular mechanisms involved in regeneration processes and introduce a variety of novel model jellyfish species in the effort to understand common principles and diverse mechanisms underlying the regeneration of complex organs and the entire body.Sperm cells have undergone an extraordinarily divergent evolution among metazoan animals. Parker recognized that because female animals frequently mate with more than one male, sexual selection would continue after mating and impose strong selection on sperm cells to maximize fertilization success. Comparative analyses among species have revealed a general relationship between the strength of selection from sperm competition and the length of sperm cells and their constituent parts. However, comparative analyses cannot address causation. Here, we use experimental evolution to ask whether sexual selection can drive the divergence of sperm cell phenotype, using the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus as a model. We either relaxed sexual selection by enforcing monogamy or allowed sexual selection to continue for 20 generations before sampling males and measuring the total length of sperm cells and their constituent parts, the acrosome, nucleus, and flagella. We found differences in the length of the sperm cell nucleus but no differences in the length of the acrosome, flagella, or total sperm length. Our data suggest that different sperm cell components may respond independently to sexual selection and contribute to the divergent evolution of these extraordinary cells.ANGPTL3 is an important regulator of lipid metabolism. Its inhibition in people with hypercholesteremia reduces plasma lipid levels dramatically. Genome-wide association studies have associated ANGPTL3 variants with lipid traits. Irisin, an exercise-modulated protein, has been associated with lipid metabolism. Intracellular accumulation of lipids impairs insulin action and contributes to metabolic disorders. In this study, we evaluate the impact of ANGPTL3 variants on levels of irisin and markers associated with lipid metabolism and insulin resistance. ANGPTL3 rs1748197 and rs12130333 variants were genotyped in a cohort of 278 Arab individuals from Kuwait. Levels of irisin and other metabolic markers were measured by ELISA. Significance of association signals was assessed using Bonferroni-corrected p-values and empirical p-values. The study variants were significantly associated with low levels of c-peptide and irisin. Levels of c-peptide and irisin were mediated by interaction between carrier genotypes (GA + AA) at rs1748197 and measures of IL13 and TG, respectively. While levels of c-peptide and IL13 were directly correlated in individuals with the reference genotype, they were inversely correlated in individuals with the carrier genotype. Irisin correlated positively with TG and was strong in individuals with carrier genotypes. These observations illustrate ANGPTL3 as a potential link connecting lipid metabolism, insulin resistance and cardioprotection. The Antarctic Ocean is one of the most remote and inaccessible environments on our planet and hosts potentially high biodiversity, being largely unexplored and undescribed. Fungi have key functions and unique physiological and morphological adaptations even in extreme conditions, from shallow habitats to deep-sea sediments. Here, we summarized information on diversity, the ecological role, and biotechnological potential of marine fungi in the coldest biome on Earth. This review also discloses the importance of boosting research on Antarctic fungi as hidden treasures of biodiversity and bioactive molecules to better understand their role in marine ecosystem functioning and their applications in different biotechnological fields.Diabetes is one of the most widespread diseases resulting in an increase in mortality rate, and negatively affecting Oman's economy. In 2019, an estimated 1.5 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes world health organization (WHO). The total number of diabetes cases among Omanis aged between 20 and 79 in 2015 is about 128,769, which increased in 2020 to 149,195. However, the total forecast number of diabetes cases will double in 2050 to 352,156. The healthcare spend on diabetes is 16.6%, which has triggered the need for the study. This research aims to review and analyze the prevailing situation around diabetes in Oman and its risk factors using multilinear regression tests, ANOVA, and descriptive analysis. this website Two hundred and fourteen samples were collected through a well-defined questionnaire using the purposive sampling technique. The study's empirical results reveal that females, who were 79% of the respondents, have at least one of their family members as a diabetes patient; 41% of the respondents were affected by Type-2 (T2-DM) diabetes, and 38% were unaware of their type of diabetes. While, 91% of them were undergoing medication. The study indicates the risk factors that impact the diabetes number and type in North Oman, which include Aage with a rate of (0.595), followed by family history (0.560), smoking habits (0.530), and being overweight (0.435). Age plays an important role in the type of diabetes of the patients, and the types of diabetes impacts medication type. The type of diabetes has influenced the frequency of diabetes patients' self-testing at home. Overall, 92% were rushed to the hospital or took medication immediately in case of a considerable variation in the readings; and 68% of the respondents complained that visiting the hospital is a costly affair and the health service is deteriorating.
