For the separation of rare cells; a biosilica structure was extracted from "Chaetoceros sp." diatoms as a novel natural source of mesoporous materials. These diatoms had special optical capabilities, especially in fluorescence emission. Biosilica surfaces of Chaetoceros sp. were chemically modified by iron oxide nanoparticles resulting in diatom silica magnetic particles functionalized with Trastuzumab antibody to separate the breast cancer cells from normal cells. The fully characterization of magnetic biosilica structure were studied by various spectroscopic techniques. The magnetic diatom conjugated with antibody displays strong absorption and two main types of fluorescence emission with peaks centered at 493 and 650 nm (photo-excited at 405 nm). As in vitro study, SKBR3 cells (HER2 positive cells) were selectively targeted and separated with this magnetic diatom structure from the mix of HER2 negative cells using a magnetic field. These results show that Chaetoceros silica shells are promising eco-friendly biomaterials suitable for biosensing chip and the targeted delivery of drugs to the specific sites. V.INTRODUCTION Nasopharyngeal cancer in Indonesia has a poor survival rate and there is only few studies regarding nasopharyngeal cancer in Indonesia. Therefore, this study was made to present Indonesian nasopharyngeal cancer data with special focus on survival of nasopharyngeal cancer profile that receives radiation therapy. METHODS This was a retrospective study conducted in the Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM). Moreover, survival analysis was done using Kaplan Meier, log rank and cox regression test. RESULTS A total of 398 patients were included with the median follow-up time of 16 (0-65) months. The 3-year survival in patients with stage I-III was >50% while the survival of 5 years was >50% only in early stage patients. The median survival for men was 46 months and for women 42 months. For OTT ≤ 49 days survival of 3 years and 5 years is 67.1%. Stage III-IVB, size N2-N3, and overall treatment time >49 days were the prognostic factors for nasopharyngeal cancer patients. After multivariate analysis, only stage III-IVB was statistically significant as a prognostic factor independent of survival. CONCLUSION Most of nasopharyngeal cancer patient came in advanced stage. The median time needed for patients to get radiation therapy and median OTT were good. Only stage III-IVB was statistically significant as a prognostic factor independent of survival. OBJECTIVES Head and neck radiotherapy can cause several toxicities, and its management has important treatment implications. Proper information about treatment is crucial to assist patients by preparing them and enhancing their ability to manage their illness. Thus, this study aimed to verify the impact of an educational video on the improvement of the patient's understanding, satisfaction, quality of life, and influence on their emotional state in different moments of treatment. METHODS A 10 min video about head and neck radiotherapy and its toxicities was produced. A prospective randomized clinical trial was performed in two groups a control group (n = 65), which received standard verbal and written information, and an experimental group (n = 65), which received standard information and the video. Appropriated questionnaires (HADS, UW-QOLv4, IRTU, and Post-RTU) were applied in four different moments in order to evaluate patients' understanding, anxiety, depression, and quality of life. RESULTS The video improved the understanding of treatment and its side effects. Also, the video group reported better awareness about oral health care during the treatment. Osteoradionecrosis and radiation-related caries were the most unknown side effects. On the other hand, the educational video did not modify the patients' anxiety, depression, and quality of life. All patients reported high satisfaction with the video. CONCLUSIONS Audiovisual tools may improve patients' understanding of radiotherapy and were shown to be a useful tool when used in association with verbal and written information in cancer centers. In addition, information about osteoradionecrosis and radiation-related caries must be reinforced to patients. OBJECTIVES To evaluate current evidence in relation to the prognostic and clinicopathological significance of oral squamous cell carcinomas arising in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP-OSCC). GX15-070 manufacturer MATERIAL AND METHODS We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus for studies published before May-2019. We evaluated the quality of studies (QUIPS tool). We carried out meta-analyses to fulfill our objective. We examined the between-study heterogeneity and small-study effects, and conducted sensitivity and subgroup analyses. RESULTS Inclusion criteria were met by 27 studies (10,505 patients with OLP, of whom 205 developed a total of 247 OSCCs). The combined 5-year mortality rate was 15.48% for OLP-OSCC (95%CI = 7.34-25.19), clearly lower than the 34.70-50.00% mortality rate for conventional oral cancer communicated in previous official reports. Also, 14.67% (95%CI = 6.34-24.81) of OLP-OSCC developed N+ status, compared to 47.00% of conventional oral carcinomas. Likewise, most of the OSCCs in the study were T1/T2 (93.57%, 95%CI = 82.20-99.88) and presented at stage I/II (81.51%, 95%CI = 68.32-92.38) at the time of diagnosis, which contrasts with 50.00% of conventional carcinomas diagnosed in stages I/II. Furthermore, most of the cases were grade I (well differentiated OSCC) (67.79%; 95%CI = 43.50-88.65), in comparison to conventional OSCCs, which present typically in grade II in 90.00% of cases. Our results also show an 11.21% of the OLP-OSCC patients in this study developed multiple tumors. CONCLUSIONS Oral squamous cell carcinomas that developed in oral lichen planus show favorable prognostic parameters, especially with regard to the mortality rate. Around 11% of OLP-OSCC patients develop multiple tumors, which confirms that OLP can lead to field cancerization.
