Lipid metabolism is fundamental to life. In insects, it is critical, during reproduction, flight, starvation, and diapause. The coordination center for insect lipid metabolism is the fat body, which is analogous to the vertebrate adipose tissue and liver. Fat body contains various different cell types; however, adipocytes and oenocytes are the primary cells related to lipid metabolism. Lipid metabolism starts with the hydrolysis of dietary lipids, absorption of lipid monomers, followed by lipid transport from midgut to the fat body, lipogenesis or lipolysis in the fat body, and lipid transport from fat body to other sites demanding energy. Lipid metabolism is under the control of hormones, transcription factors, secondary messengers and posttranscriptional modifications. Primarily, lipogenesis is under the control of insulin-like peptides that activate lipogenic transcription factors, such as sterol regulatory element-binding proteins, whereas lipolysis is coordinated by the adipokinetic hormone that activates lipolytic transcription factors, such as forkhead box class O and cAMP-response element-binding protein. Calcium is the primary-secondary messenger affecting lipid metabolism and has different outcomes depending on the site of lipogenesis or lipolysis. selleck chemicals Phosphorylation is central to lipid metabolism and multiple phosphorylases are involved in lipid accumulation or hydrolysis. Although most of the knowledge of insect lipid metabolism comes from the studies on the model Drosophila; other insects, in particular those with obligatory or facultative diapause, also have great potential to study lipid metabolism. The use of these models would significantly improve our knowledge of insect lipid metabolism. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.AIM This study examined the prevalence of job dissatisfaction and burnout among maternity nurses and the association of job dissatisfaction and burnout with missed care. BACKGROUND Nurse burnout and job dissatisfaction affect the quality and safety of care and are amenable to intervention. Little is known about job dissatisfaction and burnout among maternity nurses or how these factors are associated with missed care in maternity units. METHODS This was a cross-sectional secondary analysis of the 2015 RN4CAST survey data and the American Hospital Association's 2015 Annual Survey. Robust logistic regression models at the nurse level examined the association of job dissatisfaction and burnout with missed care. RESULTS One-quarter of nurses screened positive for burnout and almost one-fifth reported job dissatisfaction. While 56.4% of nurses in the total sample reported any missed care, 72.6% of nurses with job dissatisfaction and 84.5% of nurses with burnout reported any missed care (P less then 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The association of job dissatisfaction and burnout, which are modifiable states, with increased rates of missed maternity care suggests that addressing job dissatisfaction and burnout may improve care quality. Implications for Nursing Management Job dissatisfaction, burnout, and missed care may decrease with an improved work environment. This article is protected by copyright. It is sometimes reported as human pathogen and especially in catheter-related candidaemia. OBJECTIVES Two apparently grouped cases of infections and/or contamination were reported involving 3 and 9 patients, respectively, in two hospitals. The goal of this study was to design a molecular tool to study the genetic diversity of Y lipolytica and confirm or not the common source of contamination during these grouped cases. METHODS Given that there is no genotyping method, we used genomic markers assessed on environmental isolates to determine intra-species relationship. We selected five highly polymorphic intergenic regions, totalling more than 3200 bp and sequenced them for clinical (n = 20) and environmental (n = 14) isolates. Antifungal susceptibility was determined by EUCAST broth microdilution method. RESULTS Multiple alignment of the five sequences revealed divergence of 0%-5.8% between isolates as compared to approximately 0.2%-0.25% after alignment of whole genomes, suggesting their potential usefulness to establish genetic relatedness. The analysis showed the multiple origins of the isolates. It uncovered two grouped case of fungaemia involving 3 and 2 patients, respectively. It also revealed several unrelated sporadic cases despite their temporal relationship and one probable laboratory contamination by a common yet uncovered source, explaining several consecutive positive cultures without infection. All isolates had high minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for flucytosine, the majority (14/34) was susceptible to fluconazole, and all to the other antifungal agents tested. CONCLUSION This method could help elucidate cases related to the opportunistic pathogen Y lipolytica. © 2020 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.Disentangling the relationship between age and reproduction is central to understand life-history evolution, and recent evidence shows that considering condition-dependent mortality is a crucial piece of this puzzle. For example, non-random mortality of "low-condition" individuals can lead to an increase in average lifespan. However, selective disappearance of such low-condition individuals may also affect reproductive senescence at the population level due to trade-offs between physiological functions related to survival/lifespan and the maintenance of reproductive functions. Here, we address the idea that condition-dependent extrinsic mortality (i.e. simulated predation) may increase the age-related decline in male reproductive success, and with it the potential for sexual conflict, by comparing reproductive ageing in Drosophila melanogaster male/female cohorts exposed (or not) to condition-dependent simulated predation across time. While female reproductive senescence was not affected by predation, male reproductive senescence was considerably higher under predation, due mainly to an accelerated decline in offspring viability of "surviving" males with age. This sex-specific effect suggests that condition-dependent extrinsic mortality can exacerbate survival-reproductive trade-offs in males, which are typically under stronger condition-dependent selection than females. Interestingly, condition-dependent extrinsic mortality did not affect mating success, hinting that accelerated reproductive senescence is due to a decrease in male post-copulatory fitness components. Our results support the recent proposal that male ageing can be an important source of sexual conflict, further suggesting this effect could be exacerbated under more natural conditions.
