The aim of the research was to verify the necessity of secondary fixation with osmium tetroxide in various types of meat products and evaluation of structural changes of products using different fixation procedures. The material for the study consisted of 11 types of meat products that were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with two different methods of chemical fixation. The first method included the usual processing of biological samples glutaraldehyde primary fixation, the use of a buffer, secondary fixation by osmium tetroxide (OsO4), buffer, and dehydration using ethanol of increasing concentrations. The second method comprised the glutaraldehyde primary fixation and dehydration using the ethanol of increasing concentrations only. The results unambiguously suggest that the main difference between these methods is in fixation and visibility of fat. Our analysis principally suggests that fixation of the product with OsO4 allows the tracking of all components (fat droplets, muscle fibers, connective tissue) in meat products. At the same time, our results also support the possibility that the secondary fixation can be skipped during the analysis, where the main objection is an observation of lipid-free structures of the meat products (e.g., connection between muscle and starches or spices) or meat products with an insignificant amount of fat.Sarcopenia is characterised by a progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and physical function as well as related metabolic disturbances. While fibre-rich diets can influence metabolic health outcomes, the impact on skeletal muscle mass and function is yet to be determined, and the moderating effects by physical activity (PA) need to be considered. The aim of the present study was to examine links between fibre intake, skeletal muscle mass and physical function in a cohort of older adults from the NU-AGE study. In 981 older adults (71 ± 4 years, 58% female), physical function was assessed using the short-physical performance battery test and handgrip strength. Skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was derived using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Dietary fibre intake (FI) was assessed by 7-day food record and PA was objectively determined by accelerometery. General linear models accounting for covariates including PA level, protein intake and metabolic syndrome (MetS) were used. Women above the median FI had significantly higher SMI compared to those below, which remained in fully adjusted models (24.7 ± 0.2% vs. 24.2 ± 0.1%, p = 0.011, η2p = 0.012). In men, the same association was only evident in those without MetS (above median FI 32.4 ± 0.3% vs. below median FI 31.3 ± 0.3%, p = 0.005, η2p = 0.035). There was no significant impact of FI on physical function outcomes. The findings from this study suggest a beneficial impact of FI on skeletal muscle mass in older adults. Further experimental work is warranted in order to elucidate the mechanisms underpinning the action of dietary fibre on the regulation of muscle mass.Acanthopanax sessiliflorus (Rupr. & Maxim.) Seem. (Araliaceae) is one of the most abundant species of genus Acanthopanax. The fruits of A. sessiliflorus are used in traditional medical protocols as an analgesic, tonic, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and immune-stimulating agent. In this work, we carried out a comprehensive investigation into the anthocyanin components in the fruits of A. sessiliflorus. The anthocyanin content in the fresh fruits of A. sessiliflorus was determined by high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC/DAD), and the anthocyanin component was isolated from these using high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) and elucidated by electro-spray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI/MS), 1H- and 13C-NMR. Its antioxidant activity was evaluated by ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). We found that A. sessiliflorus contained a gross anthocyanin content of 121.35 mg/100 g. HSCCC was successfully used for separation and purification of the primary anthocyanin component, cyanidin 3-xylosyl-galactoside. The antioxidant and radical scavenging tests indicated that cyanidin 3-xylosyl-galactoside is a potent antioxidant.Nanostructures can induce light multireflection, enabling strong light absorption and efficient photocarrier generation. In this work, silicon nanostructures, including nanocylinders, nanotips, and nanoholes, were proposed as all-optical broadband THz modulators. The modulation properties of these modulators were simulated and compared with finite element method calculations. It is interesting to note that the light reflectance values from all nanostructure were greatly suppressed, showing values of 26.22%, 21.04%, and 0.63% for nanocylinder, nanohole, and nanotip structures, respectively, at 2 THz. The calculated results show that under 808 nm illumination light, the best modulation performance is achieved in the nanotip modulator, which displays a modulation depth of 91.63% with a pumping power of 60 mW/mm2 at 2 THz. However, under shorter illumination wavelengths, such as 532 nm, the modulation performance for all modulators deteriorates and the best performance is found with the nanohole-based modulator rather than the nanotip-based one. To further clarify the effects of the nanostructure and wavelength on the THz modulation, a graded index layer model was established and the simulation results were explained. This work may provide a further theoretical guide for the design of optically tunable broadband THz modulators. To meet the industrial needs for SSZ-13, variable sizes of SSZ-13 with different Si/Al ratios were firstly obtained by conventional hydrothermal synthesis using the seed method. Using a set of characterizations, like X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the physicochemical structure and size distribution could be traced. After the specific Si/Al ratio of SSZ-13 zeolites was optimized, synthesized by changing the amounts of structure-directing agents (SDAs) and NaOH, the obtained SSZ-13 showed a high degree of crystallinity. With the limitation of the pH values, the variation of the alkalinity and water content was not helpful to generate different grain sizes of SSZ-13 materials. With the help of ground seed, the various grain sizes of SSZ-13s from 0.4 to 4 μm had a similar degree of crystallinity and size distribution. Moreover, due to the identical intensity of the Al peak in the NMR results, the different grain sizes of SSZ-13s had the same acidity. Our study revealed that using the seed method was an easy and efficient way to synthesize SSZ-13s with different sizes.
