Harm reduction strategies (drug checking, naloxone administration, etc.) are at the forefront of preventing opioid-related overdoses in high-risk populations (Kennedy et al. in Drug Alcohol Depend 185248-252, 2018, https//doi.org/10.1016/j.drugalcdep.2017.12.026 ; Laing et al. in Int J Drug Policy 6259-66, 2018, https//doi.org/10.1016/j.drugpo.2018.10.001 ). Little is known, however, about how people who inject drugs (PWID) may modify their drug use behaviors after suspected fentanyl contamination in their drugs. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 105 opioid-dependent PWID enrolled in a methadone maintenance program. We assessed their willingness to engage in various harm reduction methods (i.e., slowing down drug use, not using drugs, carrying naloxone, using with someone who has naloxone) after suspected fentanyl contamination of their drugs. In a multivariable analysis, participants who were white, low-income, polysubstance users, and had previously experienced an overdose or had previously administered naloxone were more likely to report a willingness to engage in harm reduction measures. These findings provide an evidence-based understanding of PWID's engagement in harm reduction behaviors after suspecting potential fentanyl exposure as well as a basis for tailoring intervention strategies in the context of fentanyl-adulterated markets.The aim of this study was to describe the circumstances surrounding firework-related deaths in Denmark, locate similarities and compare findings to the other known literature. Autopsy files, including police reports, located through searches in the archives of the three Danish institutes of forensic medicine were accessed. Data describing the age, gender, toxicology findings, circumstances of the accident, cause of death, autopsy findings and type of fireworks were examined. Eight cases involving firework-related deaths matched the search criteria, two of which occurred on New Year's Eve. An unknown number of cases that had not been autopsied were confirmed to exist. Data from the included cases suggested that using illegal fireworks, being male and handling fireworks directly played a key role in deaths. Most notably, illegal fireworks account for few injuries overall but caused the most deaths found in this study. Firework-related deaths are a rare occurrence. Autopsy findings often reveal blast wave injury to be the cause of death. Only one of the eight decedents included in this study were intoxicated with alcohol. Thus it can be assumed that powerful illegal fireworks are, by themselves, a risk factor for a deadly accident, independent of alcohol intoxication.Estrogenic compounds including 17β estradiol (or E2) are known to negatively affect the reproductive system of many animals, including fish, leading to feminization, altered sex ratio, reduced fecundity, and decreased gonadosomatic index. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of varying concentrations of water-soluble 17β estradiol exposure on the external morphology of Bluegill. An experiment was set up where fish were individually maintained in 10-g tanks and exposed to 17β estradiol concentrations of 40 and 80 ng/L or no 17β estradiol exposure (the control). Fish were exposed for 21 days, with 17β estradiol replenished each week to account for 17β estradiol half-life. Fish were photographed laterally before and after the 21-day exposure to 17β estradiol. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics were conducted in MorphoJ and canonical variate and discriminant function analysis were used to compare the morphological changes in the fish under 17β estradiol exposure. The results showed that 17β estradiol exposure caused male dimorphic characters to change in Bluegill by becoming less prevalent. Specifically, there was a narrowing of the caudal peduncle, smaller nape protrusion, reduced opercular flap and pectoral fin, and a deeper body in the exposed groups compared with control fish under both concentrations. This research highlights the widespread effects of 17β estradiol on fish health beyond the reproductive system, which could have important conservation implications by affecting mate selection and reducing reproductive success.Soil contamination by heavy metals is one of the major abiotic stresses that cause retarded plant growth and low productivity. Among the heavy metals, excessive accumulations of zinc (Zn) cause toxicity to plants. The toxicity caused by Zn could be managed by application of Zn-tolerant plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacteria. In this study, five Zn-tolerant bacteria (100-400 mg-1 Zn resistant) were selected and identified as Lysinibacillus spp. based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The PGP properties of the Lysinibacillus spp. showed the production of indole acetic acid (60.0-84.0 μg/ml) and siderophore, as well as solubilization of potassium. Furthermore, the isolates were evaluated under greenhouse condition with 2 g kg-1 Zn stress and without Zn stress along with control on Zea mays. The results showed that Lysinibacillus spp. coated seeds enhanced plant growth attributes and biomass yield in both conditions compared with control plants. The enhancement of root growth ranged from 49.2 to 148.6% and shoot length from 83.3 to 111.7% under Zn-stressed soils. Also, the inoculated seedlings substantially enhanced chlorophyll a and b, proline, total phenol, and ascorbic acid. Therefore, this study suggested that the tested Zn-tolerant Lysinibacillus spp. may be used for cultivation of Z. mays in Zn-contaminated agricultural lands.
