Lippia citriodora is a flowering plant cultivated for its lemon-scented leaves and used in folk medicine for the preparation of tea for the alleviation of symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders, cold, and asthma. The oil extracted from the plant leaves was shown to possess antioxidant potential and to exert antiproliferative activity against breast cancer. The aim of this study was to further investigate potential antitumor effects of L. citriodora oil (LCO) on breast cancer. The in vitro antiproliferative activity of LCO was examined against murine DA3 breast cancer cells by the sulforhodamine B assay. We further explored the LCO's pro-apoptotic potential with the Annexin-PI method. The LCO's anti-migratory effect was assessed by the wound-healing assay. LCO was found to inhibit the growth of DA3 cells in vitro, attenuate their migration, and induce apoptosis. Finally, oral administration of LCO for 14 days in mice inhibited by 55% the size of developing tumors in the DA3 murine tumor model. Noteworthy, in the tumor tissue of LCO-treated mice the apoptotic marker cleaved caspase-3 was elevated, while a reduced protein expression of survivin was observed. These results indicate that LCO, as a source of bioactive compounds, has a very interesting nutraceutical potential. The effects of charge compensation on dielectric and electrical properties of CaCu3Ti4-x(Al1/2Ta1/4Nb1/4)xO12 ceramics (x = 0-0.05) prepared by a solid-state reaction method were studied based on the configuration of defect dipoles. A single phase of CaCu3Ti4O12 was observed in all ceramics with a slight change in lattice parameters. The mean grain size of CaCu3Ti4-x(Al1/2Ta1/4Nb1/4)xO12 ceramics was slightly smaller than that of the undoped ceramic. The dielectric loss tangent can be reduced by a factor of 13 (tanδ ~0.017), while the dielectric permittivity was higher than 104 over a wide frequency range. Impedance spectroscopy showed that the significant decrease in tanδ was attributed to the highly increased resistance of the grain boundary by two orders of magnitude. The DFT calculation showed that the preferential sites of Al and Nb/Ta were closed together in the Ti sites, forming self-charge compensation, and resulting in the enhanced potential barrier height at the grain boundary. Therefore, the improved dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4-x(Al1/2Ta1/4Nb1/4)xO12 ceramics associated with the enhanced electrical properties of grain boundaries. In addition, the non-Ohmic properties were also improved. Characterization of the grain boundaries under a DC bias showed the reduction of potential barrier height at the grain boundary. The overall results indicated that the origin of the colossal dielectric properties was caused by the internal barrier layer capacitor structure, in which the Schottky barriers at the grain boundaries were formed. This experiment studied the effects of lactation housing systems and human interaction on piglets' responses to routine stressors. Forty litters of piglets were reared in either a standard farrowing crate (FC) or a loose farrowing and lactation pen (LP; PigSAFE pen) and received either routine contact with humans (C) or regular opportunities for positive human contact (+HC; 3 min of patting, stroking and scratching 5 times/week). Behavioural and physiological responses to routine husbandry procedures, weaning, novelty and humans were studied in addition to effects on piglet growth, injuries and survival. Compared to C piglets, +HC piglets vocalised for shorter durations (p = 0.018) during husbandry procedures and showed a lower intensity of escape behaviour during iron injection (p = 0.042) and oral vaccination (p = 0.026) at 3 d of age, capture at 2 wk of age (p less then 0.001), and intramuscular vaccination (p = 0.005) at 3 wk of age. +HC piglets at 2 wk of age were faster than C piglets to approach (p =s had higher cortisol concentrations than +HC/LP and C/FC pigs (p = 0.012). There were no significant effects on piglet growth, the number of piglets born alive or the number stillborn, however there were more piglets weaned from FC than LP (p = 0.035). The results from this experiment raise questions that require further research on the ability of pigs reared in loose pens to cope with stressors such as exposure to humans, novelty, husbandry procedures and weaning. This experiment also provides evidence that regular positive human interaction reduces pigs' fear of humans and husbandry procedures imposed by stockpeople. Orantinib More research is required to determine if any of these effects are sustained long-term.Inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) is an important factor of alkaline, heavy metal, and oxidative stress resistance in microbial cells. In yeast, polyP is synthesized by Vtc4, a subunit of the vacuole transporter chaperone complex. Here, we report reduced but reliably detectable amounts of acid-soluble and acid-insoluble polyPs in the Δvtc4 strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, reaching 10% and 20% of the respective levels of the wild-type strain. The Δvtc4 strain has decreased resistance to alkaline stress but, unexpectedly, increased resistance to oxidation and heavy metal excess. We suggest that increased resistance is achieved through elevated expression of DDR2, which is implicated in stress response, and reduced expression of PHO84 encoding a phosphate and divalent metal transporter. The decreased Mg2+-dependent phosphate accumulation in Δvtc4 cells is consistent with reduced expression of PHO84. We discuss a possible role that polyP level plays in cellular signaling of stress response mobilization in yeast.Multifocality is usually reported as a pejorative factor after percutaneous thermal ablation (PTA) of HCC but little is known in Western series. Recurrence and survival were extracted from a prospective database of all patients who underwent PTA for ≤3 cm HCC. From January 2015 to April 2020, we analyzed 281 patients with unifocal (n = 216), bifocal (n = 46) and trifocal (n = 16) HCC. PTA of bi- and trifocal HCC resulted in a high risk of very early ( 9 (HR = 2.84, p = 0.001) and steatotic HCC (HR = 0.12, p = 0.038) were also independent predictors of OS. In conclusion, multifocal HCCs in a Western population have a dramatically increased risk of distant recurrence. OS after PTA of trifocal HCC is significantly below what was expected after a curative treatment.
