A frequent complication of central venous port systems (CVP) is infection (CVP-I), either local (CVP-LI) or a life-threatening blood stream infection (CVP-BSI). In 146 patients with CVP-I the port system was primary explanted, while 56 patients received antibiotics/ALT. 79% of Gram negative pathogens and 50% of coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) were eradicated. Failure of antibiotic treatment was more often associated with short time span since CVP implantation, neutropenia and polymicrobial infection. All patients with non-neoplastic disease survived, while 18/173 patients (10%) with underlying malignant disease had a fatal outcome in the same hospital stay.While recent historical studies have uncovered the intercontinental reputations of New England alchemists, much still remains to be known about actual attitudes concerning alchemy in the early colonies. Focusing on a corpus of roughly a dozen untranslated, and all but entirely unexamined Latin orations (ca. 200 pages) composed by Harvard College's presidents and students in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, I argue that these new sources reveal the ambivalent, occasionally antagonistic attitude that educated New England men held towards the art of alchemy. Appreciating what they regarded as, in some cases, selfless, Christian efforts to cure diseases, these Harvard elite speakers still worried that alongside pious investigators had cropped up some self-serving charlatans, those who cared not for the communal promises of the art, but only the base financial reward.This research uses 23 in-depth interviews of Filipina/o Americans seeking out treatment for drug use to understand the role of ethnicity as they experience drug use, recovery, and attempts to integrate back into society. Past literature has focused on the role of ethnicity as a buffer against drug use in host societies, with highly acculturated groups more prone to at-risk behavior. Such scholarship usually relies on static notions of ethnic culture. By contrast, using a social constructionist approach to ethnicity, I argue that meanings of ethnicity to the users go beyond homeland traditions and, in this case, reflect racialized police profiling of users in their neighborhoods and also their understanding of the methamphetamine epidemic in the Philippines. The interviewees affiliate their ethnic experiences with larger social conditions that point to neocolonialism in the homeland, racialization in the host society, and the war on drugs in both countries. This has implications for treatment programs that use culturally-appropriate services for addiction programs, so that providers complicate acculturation and assimilation models of ethnicity to understand social factors that affect the meaning of ethnic identity for Filipina/os.Ageism, or the discriminative attitudes toward specific age groups, often older adults, is a common prejudice with many negative consequences. This study explored the relationships between personality, fears of death and dying, and subscales of ageism (i.e., Avoidance, Discrimination, and Antilocution). Participants (N = 436) completed measures of personality, death and dying fears, and ageism. Multiple linear regressions showed that agreeableness, openness, and fearing others' death were negatively associated with ageism, whereas fearing the dying process of others was positively associated with ageism. This study demonstrates the distinct effects of personality and fears of death and dying on ageism.In recent years there has been great interest in the effects of exercise on cognition, but few have investigated whether physical activity influences risk-taking. Purpose To investigate the effects of acute moderate to vigorous exercise on risky decision-making. Methods Healthy (free of psychological or neurological conditions), recreationally active males and females (n = 20, 50% females, mean age = 22.4 years, sd = 2.48) performed either a 30-min bout of cycling at 50% to 60% of their maximal power output or watched a neutral film over the course of two laboratory visits (repeated measures, randomized crossover design). Following the interventions, participants completed computerized behavioral tasks the Balloon-Analogue Risk Task (BART), the Risky Gains Task, and the STOP-IT task and provided saliva samples (pre and post) to measure changes in cortisol. Results There was a significant interaction between sex and condition (p = .01, ηp2 = .3) for one of the risk-taking outcomes of the BART (number of explosions). Females exploded fewer balloons post-exercise. Performance on the other tasks did not change significantly between conditions (all p > .05). Cortisol increased significantly following exercise and responses did not differ between males and females. click here Considering cortisol change post-exercise similarly resulted in a significant sex by condition interaction (p = .005, ηp2 = .44), with males exploding more balloons and females exploding fewer post-exercise. Conclusion Acute exercise appears to have differing effects on males and females. Exercise resulted in risk seeking in males and risk aversion in females as measured by the BART.European legislation continues to drive down emission limit values, making the emission measurement of narrow stacks of increasing importance. However, the applicable standards (EN ISO 16911-1 and EN 15259) are poorly validated for narrow stacks, and the effect of flow disturbances on the described methods are largely unknown. In this article, measurement errors are investigated in narrow stacks with flow disturbances and swirl, both experimentally and through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results indicate that measurement errors due to misalignment of the flow with typical measuring probes (pitot tubes) are small compared to errors resulting from the positioning of these probes in the measurement plane. Errors up to 15% are reported using the standardized methods, while the measurement error is both smaller and more predictable when using additional measurement points. Implications Current international standards provide methods to measure emissions from industrial stacks. With increasingly small emission limit values, the accuracy of these measurements is becoming considerably more important.
