Hydroxyapatite- or calcium phosphate-coated iron oxide nanoparticles have a high potential for use in many biomedical applications. In this study, a co-precipitation method for the synthesis of hydroxyapatite-coated nanoparticles (SPIONHAp), was used. The produced nanoparticles have been characterized by dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, atomic emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results showed a successful synthesis of 190 nm sized particles and their stable coating, resulting in SPIONHAp. Potential cytotoxic effects of SPIONHAp on EL4, THP-1, and Jurkat cells were tested, showing only a minor effect on cell viability at the highest tested concentration (400 µg Fe/mL). The results further showed that hydroxyapatite-coated SPIONs can induce minor TNF-α and IL-6 release by murine macrophages at a concentration of 100 µg Fe/mL. To investigate if and how such particles interact with other substances that modulate the immune response, SPIONHAp-treated macrophages were incubated with LPS (lipopolysaccharides) and dexamethasone. We found that cytokine release in response to these potent pro- and anti-inflammatory agents was modulated in the presence of SPIONHAp. Knowledge of this behavior is important for the management of inflammatory processes following in vivo applications of this type of SPIONs.A vinyl-functionalized all-cis-tetrasiloxycyclotetrasiloxane [ViSi(OSiMe2H)O]4 (Vi = vinyl group) Janus precursor was prepared from potassium cyclotetrasiloxane silanolate. The Janus precursor was selectively modified at its dimethylhydrosilyl groups [-SiMe2H] via the Piers-Rubinsztajn reaction to obtain a family of new tetravinyl-substituted Janus rings [ViSi(OR')O]4 containing various functional groups in moderate yields. Remarkably, the tetravinyl groups on the structure remained intact after modification by the Piers-Rubinsztajn reaction. Since these synthesized compounds possess multiple functional groups (up to eight per molecule), they are potential precursors for advanced hybrid organic-inorganic functional materials.Compared with the ordinary foundation plate, the composite conical convex-concave plate (CCCP) has obvious anisotropic characteristics, and there is less research on the relationship between its mechanical properties and structural parameters. In this article, a numerical model for the equivalent stiffness of a typical unit cell with conical convex is established by using the variational asymptotic method. Then, the 3D finite element model (3D-FEM) of CCCP is transformed into 2D equivalent plate model (2D-EPM) with the effective plate properties obtained from the constitutive analysis of unit cell. The accuracy of 2D-EPM is verified by comparing with the displacement, natural frequencies, and buckling results from 3D-FEM under different boundary conditions. Then, the influence of geometric parameters and layup configurations on the effective performances of CCCP are investigated. Finally, the buckling loads and natural frequencies of bidirectional CCCP are compared with those of CCCP by using the present model. The present model is particularly useful in the early design stage of CCCP where many design trade-offs need to be made over a vast design space in terms of material selection, ply angles, and geometric parameters.
In patients with soft-tissue sarcomas of the extremities, the treatment decision is currently regularly based on tumor grading and size. The imaging-based analysis may pose an alternative way to stratify patients' risk. In this work, we compared the value of MRI-based radiomics with expert-derived semantic imaging features for the prediction of overall survival (OS).
Fat-saturated T2-weighted sequences (T2FS) and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted fat-saturated (T1FSGd) sequences were collected from two independent retrospective cohorts (training 108 patients; testing 71 patients). After preprocessing, 105 radiomic features were extracted. Semantic imaging features were determined by three independent radiologists. Three machine learning techniques (elastic net regression (ENR), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, and random survival forest) were compared to predict OS.
ENR models achieved the best predictive performance. Histologies and clinical staging differed significantly between both cohorts. The semantic prognostic model achieved a predictive performance with a C-index of 0.58 within the test set. This was worse compared to a clinical staging system (C-index 0.61) and the radiomic models (C-indices T1FSGd 0.64, T2FS 0.63). Selleckchem AG-270 Both radiomic models achieved significant patient stratification.
T2FS and T1FSGd-based radiomic models outperformed semantic imaging features for prognostic assessment.

Under the induction of a magnetic field, it can be orientated in an epoxy resin (EP) matrix, thus preparing EP/GR-Fe3O4 composites. The effects of the content of GR and the degree of orientation on the thermal conductivity of the composites were investigated, and the most suitable Fe3O4 load on GR was obtained. When the mass ratio of GR and Fe3O4 was 21, the thermal conductivity could be increased by 54.8% compared with that of pure EP. Meanwhile, EP/GR-Fe3O4 composites had a better thermal stability, dynamic thermomechanical properties, and excellent electrical insulation properties, which can meet the requirements of electronic packaging materials.Biofilm in dental unit water lines may pose a health risk to patients and dental practitioners. An AdiC-like quorum quenching enzyme, YtnP, was cloned from a deep-sea probiotic Bacillus velezensis, and heterologously expressed in E. coli to examine the application on the improvement of hygiene problems caused by biofilm infection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in dental units. Pseudomonas bacteria were isolated from dental chair units and used to grow static biofilms in the laboratory. A water filter system was designed to test the antifouling activity of YtnP in Laboratory, to simulate the biofilm contamination on water filter in dental unit water lines. The results demonstrated that the enzyme of YtnP was able to degrade the N-acyl homoserine lactones, significantly inhibited the EPS generation, biofilm formation, and virulence factors production (pyocyanin and rhamnolipid) of P. aeruginosa, and was efficient on the antifouling against P. aeruginosa. The findings in this study indicated the possibility of YtnP as novel disinfectant reagent for hygiene treatment in dental units.
