Radon (Rn) can easily leak into the environment through groundwater owing to its high water solubility. Therefore, studying the chemical factors influencing the content and removal of Rn from groundwater is crucial for the evaluation and mitigation of its radiological risks to public health. In this study, we conducted a redundancy analysis (RDA) of Rn in groundwater and performed batch sorption experiments for efficient Rn removal from the groundwater collected from Daejeon using natural zeolite (NZ) and fluorine-functionalized natural zeolite (FFNZ) sorbents. The redundancy analysis revealed a positive correlation between the concentrations of Rn and fluorine (F) in groundwater, indicating that F can support the long-term retention of Rn in groundwater. NZ and FFNZ achieved ~40% and ~70% removal of Rn, respectively, following 24 h of treatment, indicating a significant impact of F (in FFNZ) toward Rn removal from groundwater. Based on the results, Rn is considered to interact with F through the van der Waals force, which limits the volatilization of Rn from the solution. Similarly, the fluorine-functionalized sorbent would interact preferentially with Rn, thereby enhancing its sorption and removal from groundwater.Radioactive 85Kr is a major gaseous fission product emitted into the air by the nuclear fuel reprocessing industry. Measuring atmospheric 85Kr has applications in environmental monitoring, atmospheric transport model validation and dating of environmental water samples, including groundwater, sea water and glacier ice. We present an ultra-sensitive method for fast analysis of atmospheric 85Kr at 10-5 parts per trillion level. This method is based on laser cooling and trapping and is capable of counting individual 85Kr atoms. Measurements at the 3% precision level can be made on krypton extracted from 1L STP of air with a turnaround time of 1.5 h. Moreover, we have realized a system for continuous air sampling over days to weeks. Based on this atom-counting technology and a portable air sample integrator we have realized atmospheric 85Kr baseline monitoring in Hefei, China, for over 20 months. The technological advances presented in this work lay the ground for a global atmospheric 85Kr monitoring network.Temocillin is used for several years in some European countries but, only since 2015 in France. We assessed the susceptibility of Enterobacterales strains isolated from blood culture 1 year before (2014) and 2 years after (2017) its use in France. Selleck PCI-34051 1,387 strains were included by 17 clinical laboratories located throughout France 363 in 2014 and 1,024 in 2017. The rate of resistance to temocillin was 4.6% and 26.7% in 3rd generation cephalosporin (3GC) susceptible and resistant strains respectively. Cephalosporinase-overproducer (COPE) strains were significantly more resistant to temocillin (37.7%) than ESBL-producer (ESBL-PE) (23.5%) (P less then 0.01). The rate of temocillin resistance was correlated to the number of inactive beta-lactams. The rate of resistance to temocillin trend to increase from 13.9% in 2014 to 23.9% in 2017 (P less then 0.01). Temocillin remains highly active against Enterobacterales but the trend in resistance should be assessed over time.Helicobacter pylori infection is the most important etiological factor in gastroduodenal diseases development. Its evolution is influenced by several factors, including bacterial virulence genes such as cagA and cagE. This work aimed to evaluate the predictive value of cagE alone and in combination with cagA and CagA-EPIYA-C motifs number as a marker of the infection evolution. A total of 823 H. pylori DNA extracted from biopsies of consenting patients suffering from gastritis, peptic ulcer, or gastric cancer. The cagE, cagA status and cagA 3' region polymorphism were determined by PCR. The analysis shows that the risk of duodenal ulcer is 1.97-fold higher (CI = 1.18-3.30) in patients infected by strains cagA+/cagE+. And the risk of gastric cancer is 5.19-fold higher (CI = 1.18-22.70) in patients harboring strains cagE+/2EPIYA-C. The results suggest that cagE in combination with cagA-EPIYA-C motifs number can be used as predictive biomarker of H. pylori infection evolution. There is a worldwide increase in macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma genitalium strains, with severe impacts on treatment. The aim of this study was to compare three real-time PCR methods for the detection of macrolide resistance an in-house PCR described by Touati et al., ResistancePlus® MG (SpeeDx), and S-DiaMGRes™ (Diagenode Diagnostics). One hundred M. genitalium-positive patient samples collected in Sweden and a quantitated M. genitalium DNA control were analyzed. Macrolide resistance was detected in 18, 15, and 16 of the samples with the respective methods. Sequencing of the 23S rRNA gene confirmed resistance in 16 (16%) of 100 samples in which it was detected with any of the three methods. ResistancePlus® MG and S-DiaMGRes™ falsely determined one sample as macrolide-sensitive, but this sample was determined as resistant when retested. The sensitivity of the methods was comparable, although there should be awareness of possible incorrect determination of macrolide resistance, especially of low-positive samples.Hazardous drinkers with emotional vulnerabilities (e.g., elevated anxiety sensitivity) remain an underserved group. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of a single session remotely-delivered personalized feedback intervention (PFI) targeting alcohol (mis)use and anxiety sensitivity among college students. Hazardous drinkers with elevated anxiety sensitivity (N = 125; 76.8% female; Mage = 22.14; 66.4% racial/ethnic minorities) were randomized to receive the integrated PFI (n = 63) or attention control (n = 62). Follow-up assessments were conducted one-week, one-month and three-months post-intervention. Latent growth curve modeling was used to test pilot outcomes. It was feasible to recruit and retain hazardous drinking students with elevated anxiety sensitivity through follow-up with no group differences in retention. The integrated PFI was rated as more acceptable than the control with medium/large differences (p's less then 0.004; d's = 0.54-0.80). The integrated PFI group had statistically significantly greater change in primary outcomes motivation, hazardous alcohol use, and anxiety sensitivity (p's less then 0.
