In this research, the degradation of Rhodamine B, methyl orange (MO) and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) was investigated using a novel dual-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) electro-Fenton (EF) hybrid system. An air-cathode of an EF system was used for H2O2 electrogeneration and a carbon felt cathode of a MFC was used to accelerate Fe2+ regeneration. Synergistic improvement of MFC power generation and the degradation of the above refractory organics through EF reaction was achieved. The EF air-cathode was fabricated by adopting activated carbon/graphite powder mixture and PVDF binder, which showed higher H2O2 generation but slower Fe3+ reduction rate than MFC carbon felt cathode. The Rhodamine B removal rate constant and mineralization current efficiency of the MFC coupled EF were 64% and 42% higher than that of uncoupled EF, respectively. The MFC-EF coupled system also exhibited significantly higher removal efficiency for MO and 4-CP than that of un-coupled EF system. Moreover, the power density of MFC was greatly enhanced by coupling EF due to higher Fe3+/Fe2+ redox potential than oxygen reduction.In this study, the biodegradation towards aryl organophosphate flame retardants (aryl-OPFRs) was investigated by the Rhodococcus-Sphingopyxis consortium, mixture of strain Rhodococcus sp. YC-JH2 and Sphingopyxis sp. YC-JH3. The optimal ratio between the two composition strains was determined as 11. Under the optimum condition (pH 8, 35 °C and 0% salinity), the consortium could utilize aryl-OPFRs as sole carbon source and degrade them rapidly with half-life of 4.53, 21.11 and 23.0 h for triphenyl phosphate (TPhP), tricresyl phosphate (TCrP) and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) respectively. The consortium maintained high degrading efficiency under a wide of range of pH (6-10), temperature (20-40 °C) and salinity (0-6%). Besides, the consortium could rapidly degrade high concentration of TPhP and no inhibitory effect towards degradation speed was observed up to 500 mg/L. The effect of metal ions and surfactants was estimated. Most metal ions exhibited significant inhibition, except Zn2+ and Pb2+, which showed no effect or slight promotion. Ionic surfactants could severely reduce the degrading capacity, while nonionic surfactants showed no effect. With abundant inoculation of the consortium, mineralization higher than 75% could be achieved within a week. This study provides efficient microorganisms for bioremediation of aryl-OPFRs contamination.Protein extracts from green and roasted coffee beans and from spent coffee grounds (SCG) were evaluated as bioactive peptides sources. The in silico approach revealed a high frequency of the occurrence (A) of dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) (0.62) and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor peptides (0.44) in the 11S coffee globulin, which could be released after digestion. After in vitro digestion of the protein, the green bean and SCG proteins were more susceptible to proteolysis, releasing smaller polypeptides (3.4 kDa), which showed higher anti-hypertensive potentials (IC50 = 0.30 and 0.27 mg soluble protein/mL). This study was conducted with the objectives to (1) characterize patterns of wt-PRRSV-1 and wt-PRRSV-2 RNA detection over time in modified-live virus (MLV)-vaccinated batches of growing pigs raised in pig-dense regions of the USA; (2) compare wean-to-finish mortality among batches of growing pigs characterized with the different patterns of wt-PRRSV-1 and wt-PRRSV-2 detection; and (3) compare wean-to-finish mortality among batches of growing pigs characterized with the differentith lower mortality rate, when growing pig populations had early wt-PRRSV exposure.The basal ganglia-thalamocortical (BGTC) loop may underlie speech deficits in developmental stuttering. In this study, we investigated the relationship between abnormal cortical neural oscillations and structural integrity alterations in adults who stutter (AWS) using a novel magnetoencephalography (MEG) guided tractography approach. Beta oscillations were analyzed using sensorimotor speech MEG, and white matter pathways were examined using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and probabilistic tractography in 11 AWS and 11 fluent speakers. TBSS analysis revealed overlap between cortical regions of increased beta suppression localized to the mouth motor area and a reduced fractional anisotropy (FA) in the AWS group. MEG-guided tractography showed reduced FA within the BGTC loop from left putamen to subject-specific MEG peak. This is the first study to provide evidence that structural abnormalities may be associated with functional deficits in stuttering and reflect a network deficit within the BGTC loop that includes areas of the left ventral premotor cortex and putamen.The indirect, unplanned use of urban wastewater by peri-urban farmers in developing countries poses a severe risk to the environment and the farmers. Planned water reuse could contribute substantially to the irrigation water demand in peri-urban agriculture and minimize the risk. However, implementing such practice requires a thorough evaluation of stakeholder's perception and the scope within the existing organizational structures. This paper aims to assess the level of awareness, perception, and willingness of different stakeholders toward current practices and the prospect of urban water reuse in Khulna City - one of the most vulnerable cities located in the southwest of Bangladesh due to the consequences of rapid climate changes in the Bengal delta. Also, institutional arrangements and their functioning were analyzed to understand the current sectoral performance. One questionnaire with 385 respondents from the urban area, 32 in-depth interviews and one focus group discussion with farmers in the peri-urban area, and ten interviews with key informants from the government and non-government organization was conducted.
