Bedside Baby Beds
Baby bedside cribs let parents keep their baby close at night without compromising on safety. They are designed specifically for newborns and can be used until 4-6 months.
The Halo Bassinest is a swivel-over-the-parent's-bed that has a side that can be pushed down to let parents pick up their newborn during feeding times at night. The base will not fit under beds lower than 4.5 inches high.
Safety features
A crib that is placed at the bedside allows parents to monitor, comfort and feed their children throughout the night without having to leave their bed. This arrangement of sleeping is ideal for mothers who are recovering from birth or for those with limitations in mobility. It could also help parents to sleep better at night. It is important to consider the safety features when buying a bedside crib.
This type of sleep surface poses a safety concern since it doesn't offer a complete barrier to the sleeping area of the parent as well as the infant's sleeping space. This could lead to gaps that can cause the risk of suffocation for infants. In addition sharing a bed with a child increases the parent's body heat and raises the risk of overheating, which can contribute to SIDS.
While some manufacturers claim bedside co-sleepers have a higher safety rating than traditional cribs, these products do not meet CPSC's safety standards. These products can have slats which allow the baby's head or legs to get stuck. The mechanisms for attachment could be unstable, resulting in separation.
Many of these surfaces contain loose bedding which could lead to suffocation. Babies don't have the muscle or coordination to free themselves from entanglement in soft bedding, and the gaps between the mattress and the frame can cause a suffocation risk. Some of these beddings have an extremely hard bottom that could injure a baby if they fall onto it. One commenter suggested that CPSC include pictograms on its warnings about these products, which will lower the risk of caregivers ignoring key elements. Additionally, bedside sleepers must have an easy transition mechanism that can stop the baby from slipping off the bed of their parents.
Bedding
A bedside crib (also known as a co-sleeper or bassinet) lets babies sleep next to their parents' beds but still having their own space. This type of safe co-sleeping reduces the risks of entrapment, suffocation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by keeping babies close to their parents and within arm's reach for mid-night meals or for comforting.
Baby bedding for a sleeper at night could include crib sheets blankets, bumpers, and toys. Be sure that any bedding you use is appropriate for the bedside sleeper to avoid pockets or bulges that might impede the baby's breathing. Also, make sure that the mattress you buy for your bedside sleeper is firm and fits comfortably without gaps around the edges.
When selecting bedding sets, look for a set that is easy to wash and dry to keep it clean when your baby has accidents or spits in the night. You might also want to think about a travel kit for your sleeper at night, so you can easily pack and unpack it when you travel with your family or visit grandparents at their homes.
Once your infant outgrows their bedside sleeper, you are able to change them to a stand-alone toddler or crib. When transitioning, be sure to move the crib away from the bed of the parent for several weeks or months to allow your child to be comfortable sleeping in their own space, while still feeling a sense of connection to their parents' presence. Choose a crib that can be folded away to be stored and transported. Certain models can be transformed into a play yard or a more substantial bassinet. This makes them an excellent option for parents who travel frequently.
Tilt function
A bedside sleeper, sometimes referred to as a bassinet, is a piece of furniture that is attached to the bed's side for adults. One side is lower than the other side to enable parents to reach their child at the end of the night. It could also have a tilt function that can help ease reflux in infants. Some parents have found that this feature helps their baby sleep better. However it is important to keep in mind that an elevated or slanted sleeping surface may cause your child to fall into a dangerous chin-to-chest posture. This can cause suffocation, and should be avoided.
A good mattress is a key factor in choosing the crib for your child's bed. It should be flat, firm and ventilated. The mattress should be exactly the same size as the crib and be able to fit into the frame. bedside cot bed is recommended to buy a new mattress for the crib as a second-hand one could increase the risk of SIDS. Certain retailers sell mattresses that are designed specifically for specific bed frames, therefore it is recommended to use these if possible.
Some cribs designed for bedside are made to tuck under your bed to conserve space and bring your baby close, like the Halo BassiNest. Some beds aren't tall enough to be able to accommodate this type of crib. Additionally, the BassiNest's legs that are splayed make it difficult to slide under certain beds. It can be difficult to tuck the BassiNest under a divan, which could cause it to shift or move out of alignment with your mattress.
Other cribs for bedside use like the Ingenuity Dream & Grow Bedside Bassinet, can be placed next to your mattress, but aren't in a position to tilt. CHOICE suggests that parents only use these beds if they have a sturdy and breathable mattress. A bassinet that is tilted or placed next to a crib could cause your child to slide into a risky position which increases the chance of being suffocated.
Foot-to-foot positioning
A bedside crib, also called co-sleeper or bassinet, is a small crib attached to the side of a bed designed for adults. It allows parents to have access to their child at any time during the night. The beds are typically larger than traditional bassinets or cots. Some have a lower edge, which creates an obstacle between the sleeping spaces. These beds are constructed from solid materials and have wheels to make them easier to move around the home.
Some cribs with a bedside have tilt functions, which can help infants with digestive issues such as reflux or colic. But, it's crucial to use this feature with great care and at a very small angle to avoid the risk of suffocation. Consult your physician or health visitor if you are unsure whether to use the feature.
Another important aspect to consider when selecting a crib for your bed is the mattress. To minimize the risk of SIDS, the mattress should be firm, flat and airy. A mattress that is too firm could cause obstruction of the airway in infants, which can lead to danger. A breathable mattress can also help your child remain cool during the night, reducing the chance of overheating.
It is recommended to put your baby to sleep in a secure sleeping area - either a crib, cot, or Moses basket. It could be appealing to sleep in the same bed as your infant, but this can lead to SIDS. You should wait until your baby is able to sleep independently before you attempt to sleep together. If you need to, make sure your bedroom is smoke-free to safeguard your baby from smoke from other rooms. If you're living on a low income, you might be eligible for help with a bassinet or crib from Plunket.
Second-hand cribs
Parents who want to save money may be attracted by a secondhand crib, bassinet, or cradle that they receive from a relative or friend. Cribs are just one of the baby products that could cause death, especially when older cribs are damaged or missing parts, or have a wider space between the slats. Older mattresses can also develop dips or other issues that can be risky for your child. And if a crib is older than the safety guidelines in place it may be contaminated by lead paint and could contain other harmful chemicals.
If you're thinking of buying purchasing a used crib, look to see if it has been recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Verify if the crib has been painted with water-based, as this is safer for infants. Additionally, ensure that the mattress is firm and secure. Mattresses that are soft can cause infants to fall out, and they also pose a suffocation risk.
In addition to cribs, pay close attention to any secondhand bassinets, cradles and play yards. All of them should be JPMA-certified, and free of sharp edges that could scratch or poke your baby. Avoid putting pillows, blankets or toys to these products, which can become dangers for entrapment.
Children have died in cribs that were altered or tampered with. The majority of these deaths occurred when caregivers or parents tried to make the cribs more functional or more attractive by incorporating or altering items. Since 1973, crib makers and the CPSC have teamed up to set mandatory standards for safer cribs, including issues like side height, corner posts, mattress fit and cutouts in end panels. As as a result, deaths from cribs have dropped from about 150-200 per year to around 50.
