Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their baby at night without fear of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months old, at which point your baby will be ready to transition to a cot.
MFM home tester Mehack was impressed that this model has a lift-off bassinet you can use in the home and the ability to rock manually. It was easy to assemble and came with its own travel bag.
Size
Cots and cot beds differ in terms of size and size, with cots being a bit smaller than cot beds. They can also be converted into toddler beds, whereas the cot beds are typically used up to three years older. If you're looking for a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes to choose from that are large and standard both of which convert into a cot bed/toddler bed. Selecting the larger of the two is a good choice if you want your child to sleep in it until they are at least three years old.
Jasmine is an MFM mother who tested the product at home, liked the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses' basket but still not too large for her baby’s room. It's easy to get her baby in and out for feeding or soothing and the quality is top-notch when compared to other cots she's seen that feel flimsy.
Another home test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product it's a drop-off bassinet that can be moved around the house, and it rocks too. It also has an incline for reflux and a machine washable breathable liner. And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib, or Moses Basket. The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. This means you do not need to purchase an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. However, it requires a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.
Height
When choosing a bedside cot, look for one that can be elevated to a level that is comfortable for you to feed your baby. It should also be able to be lowered out of the way, so you can raise your child towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is especially useful in the event of recovering from a C-section. For instance, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. While some mums find it easier to lift their children out of standard Moses baskets at the lowest height, other mums prefer a higher base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice and one of our mum testers stating that it is easy to use with a collapsible side that is easy to use at the push of one button.
Keep in mind that a bassinet or bedside sleeping device should only be used when your baby can hold his head up without assistance, which is usually about 6 months old. This is due to the danger of suffocation. You should also be aware that when your child is old enough to be able to convert a bassinet/bedside sleeping system into a cot you must remove the sides when they are able to do so. This will stop them from getting out or falling out of bed.
Design
There are a variety of bedside crib, ranging from simple to luxurious. The most luxurious models could include features such as a built-in night light and a calming centre that plays sounds and music and offers two levels of vibrating to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or even an adjustable base that makes it easier to get your baby's food in the right place. Some models can be converted into a toddler bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.
For instance, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air which was awarded Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that allows you to pick up your baby and move them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get out of bed. This is perfect for new mums recovering from Caesarean sections, or those who need to remain in bed for prolonged periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying that it was easy to use and made reaching her baby much easier especially after a c-section.
Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which has won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It is equipped with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline and rocking feature. It's bigger than other cribs for bed that we've tested, however it folds into its travel bag, making it relatively compact when it's not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester Also, she appreciated the bedside crib's function. She said it was designed to be used by parents and babies. It is easy to move and super-sturdy. She also said that the bassinet's pivoting base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to make access easier for moms who are recovering from c-sections.
Safety
A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is that it is able to be adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their child to feed or comfort them, or change his or her nappy. This makes it perfect for new mothers recovering from the C-section. It is recommended to choose the design that allows you to lower the side of the bed with a simple button press. This will allow you to easily raise your child without having to get out of the bed. This is especially important as your baby gets older and becomes more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the chance of injury or suffocation such as duvets and pillowcases, which can cause your baby to overheat.
The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).
In bedside crib and travel cot cots4tots In its NPR, the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding additional requirements for bedside sleepers, like the requirement that these products satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at a minimum, meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements weren't practical or effective in reducing amount of instances where infants are trapped by a bedside rail and an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses that can be converted to other modes such as play yards and bassinets. Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multi-use bedside beds to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment that can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.
The CPSC is reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be released in the month of November 2021.
