Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The blue-and-gold macaw is an exquisite bird that is known for its stunning visual appeal. Its sociable personality makes it a wonderful companion for families. It is also very good in its interactions and quickly master new words and tricks.
Our own blue and gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello with apple, water and much more. why are the glaceous macaw and hyancith macaw so alike can live over 50 years in the wild.
Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They thrive in well-rounded families. They can easily become bored and will find ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. If not properly socialized macaws may become aggressive and can even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They require 2 to 3 hours per day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they are also great pets for children.
Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can be a nuisance to those who live near. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud calls which can be annoying to those who live in condos or apartments.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to tell apart. Due to this, the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is established the breeding process can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. This is not a quick process, and it is crucial that the owner is patient and understands that this isn't a task to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help accelerate the process and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative and plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
A balanced diet is essential for the health of a blue and gold macaw. They require premium food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In the wild, a macaw that is well-fed is likely to live up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird requires plenty of room to fly and exercise.
A blue and gold macaw can be a charming friend that is also quite smart. They are well-known for their ability to learn new tricks and words quickly. This bird is a fantastic choice for those who are just beginning their journey to avian companionship.
The bird is also extremely social and will bond easily with her family members. Blue and gold macaws often have loud vocalizations which include "flock calls," which is part of their natural behavior. They can also squabble and chew occasionally, particularly when they are angry or bored. It is important for prospective pet owners to be aware that this type of behavior is normal and must be expected.
The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates about Lolita's health, and her status however, there are still questions. Akromas and others who have been trained or supervised Lolita's health at some point are concerned about her diet. According to the most recent update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds of salmon every day, along with capelin, herring and squid.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they feed their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound, Washington, in 1970. Although the species is threatened living in a tank that many believe is too small.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and would like to see that she is released back into nature. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for many years. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile condition.
The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging quickly and that her health has deteriorated.
Since her captor doesn't need to reveal the information, it's unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play an integral part in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many are hopeful that she may be closer than ever before to a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to transfer the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean and she will be able to take a deep dive in the ocean, perhaps even being reunited with her mother orca. These plans came too late to save the whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
