Men, however, who reported marijuana use in the past 30 days > two times had lower, but not statistically significant, mean DPOAEs compared to men who reported ≤ two times or no marijuana use in the past 30 days. Women who reported ever using stimulants had statistically significant higher mean DPOAEs compared to women who reported never using stimulants; for men, mean DPOAEs were similar between those who reported ever using stimulants and those who never used stimulants. Conclusions The results of this study demonstrate different and contradictory associations between marijuana use, stimulant use, and hearing outcomes as a function of sex. Future research is needed to explore these associations utilizing larger sample sizes while accounting for additional harmful exposures to other noise exposures.Over the past few decades, there has been an unprecedented rise in off-label use and misuse of testosterone, growth hormone, thyroid hormone, and adrenal supplements. Testosterone therapy is often promoted to men for the treatment of low energy, lower libido, erectile dysfunction, and other symptoms. Growth hormone is used in attempts to improve athletic performance in athletes and to attenuate aging in older adults. Thyroid hormone and/or thyroid supplements or boosters are taken to treat fatigue, obesity, depression, cognitive impairment, impaired physical performance, and infertility. Adrenal supplements are used to treat common nonspecific symptoms due to "adrenal fatigue," an entity that has not been recognized as a legitimate medical diagnosis. Several factors have contributed to the surge in off-label use and misuse of these hormones and supplements direct-to-consumer advertising, websites claiming to provide legitimate medical information, and for-profit facilities promoting therapies for men's healtherone; FDA = U.S. Food and Drug Administration; GH = growth hormone; IGF-1 = insulin-like growth factor 1; LT3 = L-triiodothyronine; LT4 = levothyroxine; T3 = total triiodothyronine; T4 = thyroxine; TSH = thyroid-stimulating hormone.Purpose A growing body of evidence suggests that military service members and military veterans are at risk for deficits in central auditory processing. Risk factors include exposure to blast, neurotrauma, hazardous noise, and ototoxicants. We overview these risk factors and comorbidities, address implications for clinical assessment and care of central auditory processing deficits in service members and veterans, and specify knowledge gaps that warrant research. Method We reviewed the literature to identify studies of risk factors, assessment, and care of central auditory processing deficits in service members and veterans. We also assessed the current state of the science for knowledge gaps that warrant additional study. This literature review describes key findings relating to military risk factors and clinical considerations for the assessment and care of those exposed. Conclusions Central auditory processing deficits are associated with exposure to known military risk factors. Research is needed to characterize mechanisms, sources of variance, and differential diagnosis in this population. Existing best practices do not explicitly consider confounds faced by military personnel. Assessment and rehabilitation strategies that account for these challenges are needed. Finally, investment is critical to ensure that Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense clinical staff are informed, trained, and equipped to implement effective patient care. This report summarizes and discusses talks delivered at an educational course offered during the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Safety Pharmacology Society on advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) and cell gene therapeutic products (CGTPs). ATMPs and CGTPs comprise gene and cell therapy medicinal products, tissue-engineered products, or the incorporation of one of these products into a medical device. Cited examples of ATMPs are autologous CD34+ cells encoding for the βA-T87Q-globin gene, CAR (chimeric antigen receptor)-T cell immunotherapy medicines, genome editing products, and engineered heart muscle patches constructed from induced human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) for remuscularization of the failing human heart. The nonclinical assessment of efficacy and safety of ATMPs for undertaking human clinical trials requires innovative, product-specific strategies. In order to succeed in gaining marketing approval for these novel medicines, sponsors should establish well-defined collaborative relationships with the appropriate regulatory authorities.Introduction Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) are constantly evolving. Recently, the improved understanding of EoE pathogenesis has led to identification of a variety of other potential targets that have never been considered before.Areas covered In September 2019, we performed structured literature searches in Medline and PubMed, Cochrane meta-analyses, and abstracts of international congresses to review new potential therapeutic approaches for EoE.Expert opinion The advent of omics disciplines has been helping in finding new molecular targets in EoE pathogenesis and may provide future guidance for deep phenotyping of the disease and therefore facilitate the possibility of personalized medicine. Interestingly, these new treatments should be focused on the restoration of epithelial barrier dysfunction, downregulation of specific molecular pathways of eosinophilic inflammation, and finally, prevention of esophageal remodeling. In this review, we highlight the most recent insights in EoE pathogenesis, which open new pathways for developing new therapeutic targets for clinical practice.Introduction Decision-making for patients and their families in the field of vaccination is difficult, involving many multidimensional factors. Oxidopamine molecular weight The complexity of this process is directly responsible for the phenomenon of vaccine hesitancy. Decision aids are instruments that provide information on a specific subject, explaining the advantages and disadvantages of a decision in a personalized way, thus clarifying the patient's values.Areas covered A systematic review using PRISMA guidelines was conducted to carry out an inventory of decision aids in the field of vaccination and assess their impact on vaccine coverage and decisional conflict.Expert opinion Decision aids reduce decision-making conflict and could be good tools to address the phenomenon of vaccine hesitancy. It seems essential to integrate health professionals and patients into the design of future decision aids. This would simplify the use of these tools during the consultation. However, their effect on vaccine coverage remains uncertain. Further studies seem necessary in order to conclude that vaccination coverage is effective.
