Objectives To quantify extent of intraventricular hemorrhage following intracerebral hemorrhage with a novel, simple IVH severity score, and to explore and compare its performance in predicting worse outcomes. Patients and methods A new scoring system for IVH severity was proposed and termed Slice score. The Slice score features non-septum pellucidum section, internal capsule section, third ventricle occipital horn section, three standardized scans for scoring the lateral ventricles. 652 scans from 326 subjects were retrospectively analyzed. The correlations between measured IVH volume and Slice score, original Graeb, LeRoux, IVHS, and were compared. And the association between these scores and clinic outcomes were evaluated using logistic regression. We then identified clinical thresholds of Slice score by balancing the probability of prediction and accuracy. Primary outcome was defined as 90-day poor outcome (modified Rankin Scale score ≥ 4) and secondary outcome was 90-day mortality. Results Of 326 ICH patients, 122 (37.4%) had poor outcome and 59 (18.1%) died at 3 months. The Slice score showed the highest correlation with measured IVH volume (R = 0.73, R2 = 0.54, p 1.07, all p less then 0.05). Multivariable Analyses of categorized Slice score revealed optimal thresholds of 6 and 12 for primary and secondary outcomes (odds ratio 4.20, 95% confidence interval 1.82-10.02, p = 0.001; odds ratio 5.41, 95% confidence interval 1.66-17.43, p = 0.005, respectively). Conclusions The Slice score correlated highly with the IVH volume, was a reliable volumetric scale for measuring IVH severity, and could be an easy-to-use tool for predicting 90-day poor outcome and mortality in ICH.A study was conducted in grazing dairy heifers to assess anthelmintic efficacy and production responses in dairy heifers treated with a single injection of eprinomectin in an extended-release formulation over a 123 day-period. The study was conducted on a pasture-based dairy in the Southeastern United States (North Carolina) over the summer months. Sixty crossbred dairy heifers were weighed and randomly allocated into 2 groups. One group (n = 30) was given 5% eprinomectin subcutaneously in the cervical region while the other group (n = 30) was given an equivalent volume of saline. Calves were weighed every 30 days throughout the trial for calculation of average daily gain and differences in overall weight gain. In addition, fecal samples were collected at days 0, 30, 60, 90 and 123 for worm egg count and coproculture. Both groups of cattle had similar worm egg concentrations at the start of the study. However, the control group had increasing concentrations of fecal worm eggs throughout the summer months while the heifers that received eprinomectin had minimal fecal worm eggs. The primary parasite species identified in this study were Haemonchus placei, Cooperia species and Ostertagia. The heifers that received eprinomectin gained 105 + 2.8 kg during the 123-day study period, representing an average daily gain of 0.85 kg/day compared to 78.3 + 4.1 kg (0.64 kg/day) for the control group. This represented a 33 % increase in average daily gain associated with deworming. The results of this study indicate that a single dose of extended-release eprinomectin was sufficient to control parasites through a 123-day summer grazing season and that administration of the anthelmintic had a significant impact on weight gain.Biomass burning (BB) has significant impacts on air quality, climate and human health. In China, the BB emission has changed substantially over the past decades while the multi-year variation held high uncertainty and the driving forces have addressed little attention. Here, this research aimed to conduct a comprehensive and systematic analysis of BB variation in China and provided precise and targeted BB emission reduction suggestions. The moving of high emission for BB from 2003 to 2014 was clearly identified, by the view of reliable emission estimation and anthropogenic impacts. Multiple satellite products, field survey, time varying biomass loading data and measured emission factors were adopted to better estimating BB emission and reducing the uncertainty. Social-economic analysis was added to assess the anthropogenic impacts on high emission variation quantitatively. selleck kinase inhibitor Results showed that the cumulative BB emissions of OC, EC, CH4, NOX, NMVOC, SO2, NH3, CO, CO2, PM2.5 and PM10 during 2003-2014 were 1.6 × of China.Neonicotinoid insecticide (NEO) concentrations in ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and daily exposure via inhalation were investigated during spring and fall in an urban area in Beijing and in urban and rural areas of Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. Four NEOs, including imidacloprid, acetamiprid, thiamethoxam and clothianidin, were assessed using a QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, safe) extraction procedure coupled to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Of 64 PM2.5 samples, 100% contained at least two NEOs (imidacloprid and acetamiprid). Imidacloprid was detected at the highest levels, ranging from 4.33 to 1.13 × 102 pg m-3. A relative potency factor method that considered different toxicities was used to integrate the four NEO concentrations. The total NEO concentrations in air in the Zhengzhou rural area (mean 80.86 pg m-3) were higher than those in urban areas. Differences between seasons were not significant (p > 0.05). The highest value for the total average daily dose via inhalation of four NEOs (ADDinh,total), 91.0 pg kg-1 day-1, was found in rural children less then 6 years old. The ADDinh,total of rural residents was significantly higher than that of urban residents when there was no intensive pesticide application. Although the ADDinh,total values were below the current chronic reference dose, when possible joint toxicity and the increasing use of NEOs are considered, a potential health risk via inhalation is evident. We believe this study is the first to characterize NEO levels in fine particulate matter and to evaluate inhalation exposure in urban and rural residents under nonoccupational scenarios in China. It will enhance our understanding of exposure to NEOs and provide a basis for risk management decisions.
