Some lasers produce the most powerful light in the universe. A laser is a device that produces a very narrow and highly concentrated beam of light. Light produced from a laser contains only one color, or wavelength, rather than several different wavelengths, like in white light. Laser light is coherent, which means the light waves act as a single wave as they travel away from their source. The combined waves produce a narrow and powerful beam of light.Since light from lasers can be pointed very precisely, lasers can be used to melt and cut different materials. For example, lasers are used to cut, weld, and engrave metals. Lasers are also used for surgery because lasers can make precise incisions. Lasers are able to cut materials when the powerful, pinpointed light becomes hot enough to melt the material. Lasers are also used in many everyday devices such as printers, computers, and barcode readers.
