001) compared with those selected by DG. Furthermore, spontaneous DNA lesions were significantly reduced in MS and SU fractions compared with NE (P less then 0.001). Similarly, radiation-induced sperm DNA lesions were significantly lower in MS and SU fractions (P less then 0.001) compared with DG. Ultrastructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy suggested a moderate, non-significant increase in the number of spermatozoa with normal head and mid-piece in MS fraction compared with other methods. In conclusion, the MS-based device offers a centrifugation-free, efficient, and reliable sperm selection method, making it suitable for partially equipped intra-uterine insemination (IUI) laboratories or office IUI programmes. Further research should focus on the safety and clinical usefulness of the device in assisted conception programmes in general and IUI in specific.Research on gender gaps in school tends to focus on average gender differences in academic outcomes, such as motivation, engagement, and achievement. The current study moved beyond a binary perspective to unpack the variations within gender. It identified distinct groups of adolescents based on their patterns of conformity to different gender norms and compared group differences in motivation, engagement, and achievement. Data were collected from 597 English students (aged 14-16 years, 49% girls) on their conformity to traditional masculine and feminine norms, growth mindset, perseverance, self-handicapping, and their English and mathematics performance at the end of secondary school. Latent profile analysis identified seven groups of adolescents (resister boys, cool guys, tough guys, relational girls, modern girls, tomboys, wild girls) and revealed the prevalence of each profile. Within-gender variations show that two thirds of the boys were motivated, engaged, and performed well in school. In contrast, half of the girls showed maladaptive patterns of motivation, engagement, and achievement, and could be considered academically at risk. By shifting the focus from "boys versus girls" to "which boys and which girls", this study reveals the invisibility of well-performing boys and underachieving girls in educational gender gap research. In 2020, the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic is causing a huge and dramatic impact on healthcare systems worldwide. During this emergency, fragile patients suffering from other comorbidities, especially patients susceptible to or affected by cardiovascular disease, are the ones most exposed to the poorer outcomes. Therefore, it is still mandatory to continue to strictly adhere to the rules of cardiovascular prevention. check details This document aims to provide all doctors with simple and clear recommendations in order to spread useful messages to the widest number of subjects in order to continue the battle against cardiovascular diseases even in times of pandemic.
The cardiovascular efficacy of glucagon-like peptide1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) in type2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are well documented; however, the differences in cardiovascular efficacy among subpopulations remain unknown. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the differences in cardiovascular efficacy of long-acting GLP-1RAs among subpopulations of patients with T2DM and to assess the drug safety.
Relevant studies up to March31, 2020 were searched for in six electronic databases, namely PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Clinical Trials, Science Direct, and Web of Science. The primary outcome was three-point major adverse cardiovascular events (including cardiovascular mortality, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and non-fatal stroke). Subpopulations were defined using ten selected influential factors, and the differences in cardiovascular efficacy in subpopulations stratified by different influential factors were accessed by synthesizing studies with random-effects models one by onulation with established CVD. These findings may have implications for the management of long-acting GLP-1RAs across subpopulations of patients with T2DM.
Our analysis suggested no subpopulation differences in the cardiovascular efficacy of long-acting GLP-1RAs among stratified subpopulations, and favorable trends were only observed in the subpopulation with established CVD. These findings may have implications for the management of long-acting GLP-1RAs across subpopulations of patients with T2DM.
Recent guidelines for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) provide evidence supporting limited use of sulphonylureas (SUs), especially in specific risk patient categories, yet data from national registries still suggest their widespread use. The aim of this study was to investigate characteristics of patients with diabetes treated with SUs and quantify the proportion of patients that met the recommendations for use of SUs by recent guidelines and of those presenting characteristics representing an inappropriate prescription risk (IPR).
A multicenter, retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study in patients with T2DM receiving treatment with SUs (as monotherapy or in combination with another diabetes therapy) was conducted between 2017 and 2018 in 22 outpatient diabetes clinics across Italy. Exclusion criteria were type 1 diabetes, diabetes mellitus secondary to other conditions, and presence of severe/life-threatening diseases.
A total of 510 patients with T2DM (306 men, 204women; meah T2DM, especially among those with overweight/obesity, older age, history of cardiovascular disease, and hypoglycemia.
The results of this study provide evidence of a high rate of inappropriate SU prescription risk among patients with T2DM, especially among those with overweight/obesity, older age, history of cardiovascular disease, and hypoglycemia.Hepatic diseases include all diseases that occur in the liver, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, etc. Hepatic diseases worldwide are characterized by high incidences of digestive system diseases, which present with subtle symptoms, are difficult to treat and have high mortality. Galectins are β-galactoside-binding proteins that have been found to be aberrantly expressed during hepatic disease progression. An increasing number of studies have shown that abnormal expression of galectins is extensively involved in hepatic diseases, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), liver cirrhosis, hepatitis and liver fibrosis. Galectins function as intracellular and extracellular hepatic disease regulators mainly through the binding of their carbohydrate recognition domain to glycoconjugates expressed in hepatocytes. In this review, we summarize current research on the various roles of galectins in cirrhosis, hepatitis, liver fibrosis and HCC, which may provide a preliminary theoretical basis for the exploration of new targets for the treatment of hepatic diseases.
