To evaluate the 24-segment sphericity index (SI) of the fetal heart using
HQ regarding the change with advancing gestation and reproducibility.

Eighty-one pregnant women at 18-21 + 6 and 28-31 + 6 weeks were studied using
HQ to calculate 24-segment SI of left and right ventricles. Intra- and inter-class correlation coefficients and intra- and inter-observer agreements of measurements for SI were assessed in each segment.

With respect to intra-observer reproducibility, all SI values showed correlations between 0.596 and 0.774 for the left ventricle, and between 0.491 and 0.764 for the right ventricle, with good intra-observer agreements except for right ventricular segment 11-15. With respect to inter-observer reproducibility, all SI values showed correlations between 0.473 and 0.755 for the left ventricle, and between 0.48 and 0.767 for the right ventricular segment 1-18. However, right ventricular segment 19-24 showed no correlations. Good inter-observer agreements were noted in the right ventricle, whereas poor inter-observer agreements were evident in the left ventricle. There were significant differences in the mean SI values in the apical segment of the left ventricle between 18-21 + 6 and 28-31 + 6 weeks (
 < .05), whereas there were no significant differences in the mean SI values in the right ventricle between both gestational ages.

To identify whether the first plasma C-reactive protein values taken 6-8 h postpartum are predictive of the clinical early-onset neonatal sepsis (cEONS).

We retrospectively analyzed C-reactive protein (CRP) values of 400 neonates, including 28 with cEONS, who underwent plasma CRP measurements as part of sepsis work-up. To determine whether the first CRP measurement is predictive of cEONS, logistic regression was used with CRP as an independent variable and cEONS (yes/no) as a dependent variable.

A moderate predictive ability of the first CRP measurement (odds ratio 1.4, CI [1.13, 1.76],
=.003) was revealed, at a 5.3 mg/L threshold. However, it resulted in poor sensitivity of 50%, and a false positive rate of 30%. Increasing the sensitivity to 75% or 90% lead to increased false-positive rates of 55% and 75%, respectively.

(Forsk.) Vierh. (Acanthaceae) is used as a Chinese herb. Studies have found that it contains marinoid J, a novel phenylethanoid glycoside (PG) compound, but its neuroprotective functions are largely unknown.

This study evaluated the effects of marinoid J on vascular dementia (VD) and determined its potential mechanisms of action.

The VD model was established by the ligation of the bilateral common carotid artery in Sprague-Dawley rats, who received daily intragastrically administration of saline, marinoid J (125 or 500 mg/kg body weight/d), or oxiracetam (250 mg/kg body weight/d) for 14 days (20 rats in each group). The Morris water maze (MWM) was used to evaluate cognitive performance. The hippocampus was subjected to histological and proteomic analyses.

Marinoid J shortened the escape latency of VD rats (31.07 ± 3.74 s,
 < 0.05). It also decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) (27.53%) and nitric oxide (NO) (20.41%) while increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) (11.26%) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (20.38%) content in hippocampus tissues. Proteomic analysis revealed 45 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in marinoid J-treated VD rats, which included angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), keratin 18 (KRT18), cluster of differentiation 34 (CD34), and synaptotagmin II (SYT2).

Marinoid J played a role in protecting hippocampal neurons by regulating a set of proteins that influence oxidative stress and apoptosis, this effect may thereby alleviate the symptoms of VD rats. Thus, pharmacological manipulation of marinoid J may offer a novel opportunity for VD treatment.
