Activated carbon powders made from coconut husk (CHCs) were prepared by one-step rapid pyrolysis activation process. Effects of temperature, oxygen and steam on the pore structure of CHCs were investigated. Results showed that high temperature, oxygen and steam all motivated the development of the CHCs pore structure. High temperature accelerated the evaporation of volatiles and led to more micropore structures. Oxygen promoted the development of both micropores and mesopores. CHCs' porosity separately presented a linear and a logarithmic growth with the increase of the preparation temperature and oxygen content. CHCs prepared under 1000 ℃ with activation agents of 6% oxygen and 20% steam exhibited the largest specific surface area and total pore volume of 415.85 m2/g and 0.1748 cm3/g. Steam can diffuse into the CHC matrix and enhance the formation of more mesopores. Steam over 20% would over-burn the substance and lead to the collapse of some pore structures. The thermo-chemical characterization (proximate and ultimate analyses and higher heating value) of banana trunk biomass waste has been carried out. The thermo-gravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) investigations have been made at heating rates of 10, 15, 20 and 25 °C/min. The TGA data have been used to carry out kinetic analysis and evaluate the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters using iso-conversional models. The values of activation energy increase with conversion (α) irrespective of the iso-conversional model used. The average values of activation energies (Eα) are found to be 386.21, 355.43, 385.77, 355.01, 379.67, and 292.78 kJ/mol for Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO), Starink, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Tang, Vyzovkin and Vyzovkin AIC model, respectively. The average values of change in enthalpy, Gibbs free energy, and entropy have been calculated. The reaction mechanisms of pyrolysis have been predicted using Criado's method. Sustainable treatment of wastewaters generated from paint production is increasingly posing an environmental concern. Recalcitrant paint wastewaters are mostly treated by energy and cost intensive physicochemical methods like incineration, distillation or advanced oxidation. This paper reported for the first time a case study applying biological treatment processes to properly handle a high-strength recalcitrant paint wastewater with 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5)/chemical oxygen demand (COD) less than 0.02. A biological treatment scheme integrating anaerobic granular sludge blanket reactor, aerobic carrier biofilm reactor and aerobic activated sludge bioreactor was proposed and examined. Laboratory and full-scale trials demonstrated satisfactory operation with overall COD removal up to 99%. Besides yielding consistent effluent quality conforming to the discharge limits, the full-scale plant gained considerable savings in operating cost over a 5-year operation. With proper microbial adaptation and cultivation, as well as adequate reactor and process designs, the scheme offers a good feasibility for efficient and cost-effective treatment of the high strength and recalcitrant paint wastewater. It is significant to understand corn stover (CS) in anaerobic digestion (AD) under high organic loadings. A semi-continuous mesophilic (37 ± 1 °C) CS AD was conducted in this study with increasing loadings. The initial total solids (TS) gradually increased with 1% gradient at every 10 days from 8% to 15% until the system was acidified. Adding different ratios of cattle manure (CM) (20%, 30% and 40% (v/v)) to rescue this system back to a stable operation was adopted. The diversity of bacteria and archaea was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology. The results showed that when loading TS content was increased to 15%, AD system was acidized with pH value of 5.13. 30% of CM was the optimal ratio to recover biogas production. High abundance (31.07%) of Bathyarchaeota was first found in AD system. Acidification of high loading CS AD can be highly correlating with bacterial community, specially Clostridium and Caproiciproducens. INTRODUCTION Porous silicon (PSi) nanoparticles are capable of delivering therapeutic payloads providing targeted delivery and sustained release of the payloads. In this work we describe the development and proof-of-concept in vivo evaluation of thermally hydrocarbonized porous silicon (PSi) nanoparticles that are implanted with radioactive 155Tb atoms and coated with red blood cell (RBC) membrane (155Tb-THCPSi). The developed nanocomposites can be utilized as an intravenous delivery platform for theranostic radionuclides. METHODS THCPSi thin films were implanted with 155Dy ions that decay to 155Tb at the ISOLDE radioactive ion-beam (RIB) facility at CERN. The films were processed to nanoparticles by ball-milling and sonication, and subsequently coated with either a solid lipid and RBC membrane or solely with RBC membrane. The nanocomposites were evaluated in vitro for stability and in vivo for circulation half-life and ex vivo for biodistribution in Balb/c mice. RESULTS Nanoporous THCPSi films were successfuied for better persistence in circulation. When optimized, these particles could be used in targeted radionuclide therapy with a combination of chemotherapeutic payload within the PSi structure. Cognitive neuropsychiatry is a branch of cognitive psychology that seeks to explain neuropsychiatric symptoms in terms of disruptions or damage to normal cognitive processes. A key objective of this approach is to use insights derived from the study of pathological symptoms to inform accounts of premorbid cognitive systems. Delusions, in particular, can be considered to represent dysfunction of the cognitive processes underlying belief formation, so studying delusions may provide unique insights into nonpathological belief. While this approach has provided compelling accounts for a range of delusions in terms of putative cognitive dysfunctions, it is less clear that it has achieved progress in its reciprocal goal of informing understanding of belief more generally. In this review, we trace the origins of the cognitive neuropsychiatric approach and consider the reasons for the lack of progress.
