Baby Bedside Cot
A baby bedside crib (or next-to me crib) is a bassinet type cot that attaches to the side of your mattress. This allows you to be able to reach your baby and comfort your child without getting up from your mattress. Some models have an incline feature that helps relieve reflux.
It is best to put your baby in a crib or bassinet in a mattress that is flat and firm. This will lower the possibility of him being suffocated.
Cot
A bedside cot known as a co-sleeper or bassinet is a great way to let your baby sleep close to you in the early months. They're designed to fit easily close to your bed so you can lift your child towards you for night-time feeding or gently lulling them back to sleep. They're also great for mothers recovering from the C-section.
There are a range of models to choose from however the Arm's Reach Clear-Vue stands out. This compact play yard features four sides. Two of them are long and can be lowered out of the way with Velcro so that you can easily access your baby's feeds.
The Baby Hug 4 In 1 Air is another option. It also comes with a drop down side and can be converted into recliner. This is a fantastic option for infants and toddlers and allows you to alter your baby's sleeping position as they grow.
It's important to note that although a bassinet can be used as an alternative to traditional cots, Red Nose strongly suggests sleeping your infant in their crib from birth until six months. This is due to SIDS risk is significantly higher when babies share beds, particularly with adults, and because it's unsafe to allow an infant to sleep in a bassinet that does not meet the mandatory Australian safety standards.
Cots are usually safer than bassinets, as they have a fixed height that will ensure there is no gap between your baby's mattress and the adult bed. They're also generally larger, meaning they can be converted into full-size or toddler beds as your baby grows - saving you money in the long run.
When shopping for a baby bedside cot it is important to think about your budget and the size of your bedroom or nursery as you choose a model. Keep in travel cot bedside that cot beds are likely to be more expensive than bassinets but are a great investment as they last for a long time and can be used as your baby grows from infant to adulthood and beyond.
It's also worth remembering that you'll require a baby mattress for your cot or bedside crib. The mattress should be flat, firm, and breathable for your baby to have a restful night and reduce the chance of developing breathing problems or pressure sores. Be wary of second-hand mattresses because they could increase the risk of your child developing SIDS. Be sure to look for a brand that's been approved by the CPSC and adheres to the most recent guidelines. Be cautious not to over-stuff the crib, or use duvets or pillows, bumpers or baby positioners. They could pose the risk of suffocation. A comfortable, airy mattress for your baby should be able to support the spine. There are a variety of baby mattresses online, ranging from budget-friendly options to more expensive brands. If you're unsure, visit an establishment and try them out for yourself.
