Five Laws That Will Aid With The Large Bedside Cot Industry
Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their baby at night without fear of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months, after which your baby is old enough to transition to an actual crib.

MFM home tester Mehack was impressed that this model features a bassinet that can be lifted off to use in the home and a manual rocking function. It was also simple to put together and came in its own travel bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots and cot beds differ in terms of size, with cots being smaller than beds for cots. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However cots are generally used by children up to the age of three. If you're looking for a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes available that are large and standard both of which will convert into a toddler bed or cot mattress. If you want your child (or children) to be comfortable sleeping in the larger cot, it's a great idea to pick the larger one.

MFM mum home test Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was slightly bigger than the Moses basket, but not too big for her baby's room. She says that it is easy to get the baby in and out of the cot during night feeds or for soothing, and that its quality is better than other cots she has seen that are cheap and flimsy.

Another home-based test subject, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also comes with an incline for reflux and a machine washable liner that breathes. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means that you don't have to purchase a brand new mattress when your baby grows. However, it will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the perfect mattress for your cot.

Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed choose one that can be raised to a height that is comfortable for you when feeding the baby. It should also be able to be dropped down out of the way so that you can lift your baby up towards you during night feedings or for soothing. This feature is particularly useful if you're recovering from an operation such as a C-section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.

You should also consider how low you would like the base of your crib to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their babies from standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest level, while others prefer a higher level to provide them with more stability. One of our testers for mums mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It is a collapsible side you can push at the press of the button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet or bedside sleeping device should only be used in the event that your baby can hold his head without assistance, which is usually at around 6 months. This is due to the risk of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to know that if you opt for a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a crib it is necessary to start removing the sides when your child is able to do this to ensure that they don't get out of bed or get out of bed.

Design

There are many different styles of cribs for beds that range from basic to luxurious. The more luxurious options may include features such as an integrated night light and a calming centre which plays music and sounds and offers two levels of vibrating to help soothe your baby to sleep, or even a swivelling base that makes it easier to get your baby's food in the right place. You can also find models that can be converted to the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both) ideal for when your child is ready to transition to a larger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you take your baby to the crib and move them to the opposite side of the crib without getting out of bed. This makes it perfect for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean births or who require a the bed for extended periods of time. Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried this product at home, said it was easy to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby, especially after having a C-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and includes a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and rocking function. It's larger than other cribs for bed that we tested, but it folds down into its travel bag, making it a small size when not in use.

MFM mom home tester Leya also appreciated the function of this bedside crib she explained how it was created with the needs of parents and children in mind. 'It has an excellent design that is incredibly maneuverable and is extremely durable. She also said that the bassinet's pivoting base was a great idea because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to make access easier for mothers who are recovering from C-sections.

Safety

The most important security aspect of a large bedside cot is that it is able to be raised or lowered to enable parents to reach their baby when they require to feed, comfort them, or change their nappy. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from an C-section. You should choose an option that lets you lower the side of the bed by pressing a button. This allows you to lift your child without having to get out of bed. This is especially crucial as your baby grows older and more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the chance of suffocation or injury, such as duvets and pillowcases, which can cause your baby to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product like gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance, these products would have to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. However the CPSC found that these requirements would not be practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents in which infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed.

The majority of the incidents covered in the NPR focused on multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted to other modes, such as bassinets or play yards. bedside baby bed suggested that the CPSC include a different option to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside sleepers that would permit them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. This attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the item is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments as well as other submissions received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will consider these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be published in the month of November 2021.
