Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to rest with their baby at night without fear of SIDS. However, they are only suggested for use until 6 months when your baby will need to move into a cot, or a moses basket.
MFM home tester Mehack loved that this model features a bassinet that can be lifted off to use throughout the house, as well as the ability to rock manually. It was also simple to put together and came in its own travel bag for convenient storage.
Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are smaller than. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However cots are generally intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots, large and standard - which can be transformed into a toddler bed or a cot. Selecting the larger one is a good idea when you want your child to sleep in it until they are +/- three.
Jasmine, a MFM mother who tested the product at home, was pleased that it was slightly larger than a Moses' basket but still not too big for the baby's room. She says that it is easy to lift the baby into and out of the cot during evening feedings or to soothe, and that its quality is superior to others she has seen that are less sturdy.
Emily, another home tester, is awed by the flexibility of the Maxi-Cosi lora which is a lift-off, portable bassinet. It also rocks. It also has an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable liner that is breathable. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is compatible with a South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means you don't have to purchase a new mattress every time your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.
Height
When choosing a bedside cot, look for one that can be raised to a height that's comfortable for you when feeding baby. It should also be able to be lowered out of the way, so you can lift up your child towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is especially useful in the event of recovering from a C section. For example, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
Another thing to consider is how low you want the cot's base to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their children from standard Moses baskets when the base is at the lowest level, while others prefer a higher level to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice, with one of our mum testers saying that it is easy to use with a collapsible side that you can press down at the touch of a button.
Keep in mind that a bassinet or bedside sleeping device should only be used when your baby can hold his head up without assistance, which is usually around 6 months. This is due to the possibility of being suffocated. It's also important to know that if you select a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a crib, you will need to begin removing the sides once your child is ready for this, so that they don't climb out or get out of bed.
Design
There are many different styles of cribs for beds with a range of styles from simple to lavish. Some of the most extravagant options include features such as a built-in light, a soothing center that plays music and sound and has two levels that help to soothe your baby back to sleep, or an adjustable footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child to feed them. Some models can be converted into an infant bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.
For example, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that lets you pick up your newborn and move them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean or require a bed for longer durations of time. bedside travel cot loved this feature, saying it was easy to use and made reaching her baby much easier - especially after her c-section.
Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It also is equipped with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline and rocking function. It's bigger than the other bedside cribs that we tested, but it folds up into its travel bag, making it a small size when not in use.
MFM mom home test Leya also appreciated the function of this crib for bed, describing how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It has a great design that is incredibly maneuverable and is extremely sturdy. She also said that the bassinet's pivoting base was a great idea because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to facilitate access, especially for new mums recovering from c-sections.
Safety
The most important safety aspect of a large bedside cot is that it can be easily raised or lowered to enable parents to reach their baby when they need to feed, comfort them, or change their nappies. This is why it's perfect for mothers who are still recovering from a C section. Find a model that lets you lower one side at the push of a button so you can effortlessly lift your baby without getting out of bed. This is crucial, particularly as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You'll also want to not add anything to the crib that increases the chance of suffocation, or injury, such as duvets and pillows, which can cause babies to overheat.
The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product, such as gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance, these products would have to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. However, the CPSC found that these requirements are not efficient or feasible to reduce the amount of instances in which infants were entrapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.
The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that could be converted into other modes such as play yards and bassinets. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different option to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use which would permit them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. This attachment can be permanently connected or removed when the item is not being used as a baby bassinet.
The CPSC is considering these and other comments received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will take into account these comments when it votes on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November 2021.
