What Do You Know About Bedside Cosleeper?
Bedside Cosleeper

A bedside sleeper is attached to your adult bed. It's safe, as long as you comply with the CSPC safety guidelines for infant sleeping spaces.

These guidelines are similar to crib bedding standards. You can read more about these guidelines here. The most important factors to consider when choosing the right bedside sleeper are Safety Comfort, Convenience, and Safety.

Safety

Many new parents and pregnant mothers have embraced cosleeping, also known as bed-sharing, in line with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that infants should be in the same room as their parents. The Academy recommends that room-sharing with a baby is safer than sleeping in the same bed as parents because it lowers the chance of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SIDS). The AAP doesn't recommend bed sharing but it does recommend that co-sleeping on a separate sleeping surface is a great way to decrease the risk of SIDS. This is why the development of the bedside cosleeper became so important to many families.

A bedside sleeper is attached to a bed frame that is suitable for adults. It is similar to a crib sleeper. The bedside cosleeper lets parents monitor the baby and allows them the freedom to sleep in their own bed. The best cosleepers are built with top-quality materials and meet strict safety standards. Be sure to look for the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) stamp of approval, which indicates rigorous product testing and quality control to ensure your child's safe cosleeping experience.

The safety of a cosleeper is dependent on several factors. This includes how it's set up and secured to the parent's mattress. If the bedside cosleeper isn't attached to the parent's bed in a way that prevents the gaps and spaces in which an infant can become trapped, it could be a suffocation hazard. It is essential that the attachment system of a bedside crib be examined to determine if it can withstand the forces that might be imposed in the use of it, like parents rolling onto and off of the sleeper or a 25-lb. The attachment system, or the corners on the bedside cosleeper should be subjected to the horizontal force.

The voluntary standard for bedside cribs incorporates, by reference, the federal consumer safety standards for bassinets (16 CFR part 1218), including the requirements for performance for closed fabric openings. The mandatory requirements in the standard also address neck and head entrapment hazards by insisting that following the application and release of 50-lb. horizontal force in the vicinity of the attachment system and the corners of the bedside sleeper, gaps that is greater than 1.0 in. It is not allowed to create a gap greater than 1.0 in. Only read-only copies of the standard can be obtained from ASTM's online Reading Room.

Convenience

Many parents are reluctant to cosleep because they fear suffocation or SIDS, or because it's an act of "Ferberization", which forces children to be in a room by themselves. Anthropologists have noted for years that many primates, mammals, and people from non-Western cultures sleep regularly. This could be due to the fact that infants are calmed by the familiar voice of their mother and it can also help them learn to self-soothe.

The best bedside sleepers come with a smart design that attaches to the sides of any bed and swivels for easy access for feedings during the night or diaper changes. Look for bedside rocking crib with feet that are adjustable and retract to accommodate different mattress sizes and a huge storage space for all of your baby's necessities.

Choose a bedside sleeper which can fit in with the standard crib bedding so that it can be used safely as your child grows. You may also want to think about an adjustable model that can transform into a play yard or a more deep bassinet to last for years of use, and folds easily for transport.

Portability

A bedside cosleeper with wheels or a base that is lightweight is much easier to move than one that has a heavy wooden frame or a substantial base. The babybay bedside sleeper HALO bassiNest essencetia and Snoo Smart Sleeper are all portable. They come with adjustable feet that can be retracted to accommodate platform mattresses; legs that fold inwards to allow maximum proximity to the mattress; and 100% mesh sidewalls to allow airflow without covering baby's nose or mouth.

The Arm's Reach ClearVue is an excellent choice. It adjusts in 1" increments and can be used as a bassinet or a portable bed. It also swivels to allow easy access to your baby to comfort, nurse or check on her throughout the night.
