Lolita's Personality

Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can be a distraction to those who live near. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which could be a problem in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who might be startled by their roar.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this, the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is determined, breeding can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. It is a lengthy process and the pet's owner must be patient and recognize that this is a challenging task. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process and aid in resolving any behavior issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor, on a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could live the remainder of her life and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the actual ocean not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea, where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and perhaps be reunited with her orca mother. The plans were not enough to save the whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
