How to Buy A1 and A2 Driver's Licenses
The A1 licence allows you to ride a smaller motorcycle with an engine size up to 125cc. This license permits you to drive on motorways and to carry pillion riders.
This is the first step in a series of levels that eventually will lead to an unlimited driving licence. You can progress to the next stage using either direct or progressive access.
What is an A1 license?
The A1 license is the initial step in the world of motorbike riding. The A1 licence can be obtained from the age 16 and permits the driving of small motorcycles with a maximum capacity of 125cc and the maximum power of 11 kW. It is the only licence 17 & 18 year olds are able to get and permits you to drive without L-plates, and with a passenger. If you decide to upgrade to a more powerful motorcycle after you have obtained this licence, you can do so at the age of 19 if you've completed all required training.
After passing the compulsory basic training (CBT) You must complete the theoretical driver's licence training prior to taking your practical A1 motorbike test. The theory training comprises general test materials that are applicable to all categories of driving licences as well as an addition with motorcycle-specific content.
You will need at least 12 90-minute classes for the fundamental material, and an additional 4 90-minute classes for the additional. If you already have a valid driving license, your hours of theory will be reduced from 12 to 6.
Once you have passed the theory test, you can take your practical A1 motorcycle test. You should give yourself ample time to prepare for this test, as it is vital that you pass, especially if you intend to go on to the next licence category.
It is important to remember that if you do not take the A1 and then move straight to the A2 license, you will need to retake your CBT within two years. If you wait until you're 19 to then proceed straight to the A licence, you won't have to take a new CBT. This will let you save money in the long haul. This makes it a very wise option for anyone who is considering advancing to larger more powerful bikes.
What is A2 license?
The A2 is a great choice for those looking to upgrade their CBT to bigger, more powerful motorcycles. The A2 licence allows riders to ride on motorways and carry passengers.
To get an A2 license, you will have to be able to pass the CBT, Motorcycle Theoretical Exam and complete both modules 1 and 2 of the training. In order to obtain an A2 licence is the first step to getting a Category A (Full or DAS) licence.
A2 compliance requires the bike to have an engine that is 395cc or greater and a maximum power of 35 kW (47.5bhp). It also requires a weight-to-power ratio of less than 0.2kW/kilo. Dealerships and online sellers frequently advertise their bikes as A2 compliant. However, it's essential to conduct your own thorough research to make sure that the bike you are looking at is A2 compliant.
The Module 1 test is a check of your riding abilities. An instructor will take you for 10 minutes of riding. They'll evaluate things like how you handle the bike, your speed of manoeuvring, and hazard-avoidance. The assessor will also evaluate your attitude and knowledge of road laws.
Module 2 is more challenging and requires you demonstrate your ability to drive in the open road. It will test your road skills, including how you handle the bike in normal conditions and in bad weather conditions. The assessor will also assess your knowledge of road law and how you interact with other road users.
Once these details 've completed both of the modules and have had an A2 license for two years, you can upgrade to a full Category A license. This means you are able to use any size bike and not have to wear L-plates.
It's important to note that, even though you are able to use larger bikes with an A2 licence, it's important to be careful and exercise good judgment. As with any motorbike riding vehicle, riding it carries certain risks. Be prepared and think about them before you set out on the road.
How do you obtain an A1 license
The A1 license is the first step after an CBT certificate. It allows you to ride motorcycles up to 125cc, and power. This is ideal for riders who have completed their CBT course at the time they became eligible, and are now ready to advance both financially and in terms of knowledge.
To obtain an A1 license, you must have an active UK driving license (provisional or permanent) and pass the motorbike test and take the two-part A1 practical examination. The theory test is comprised of 20 multiple-choice questions, and the practical test consists of a closed circuit and various skill exercises.
Make sure to read the Highway Code thoroughly and practice by taking online tests and exams prior to taking the test in theory. Practicing will help you make the most of your study time and increase your chances of passing the test.
After passing the theory test, schedule an appointment for your A1 practical motorcycle test with a certified DVSA trainer. It is recommended that you look into different training institutions and compare their prices prior to choosing one. Some schools are more expensive than others. But, if you choose a trainer you feel comfortable with and have set aside a monthly budget, you will save money over time.
The A1 motorcycle test will require you to demonstrate basic riding and legal knowledge. Your instructor will help you prepare for the test by walking you through various maneuvers and skills exercises. You will be required to demonstrate a slow-speed control, wheel the motorcycle and perform the figure eight.
If you pass the A1 motorcycle test after passing the test, you are allowed to ride a motorbike with the maximum cylinder capacity of 125 cc, and a maximum power of 11 kW. You are also able to operate three-wheeled motor vehicles under this category of licence, including mopeds and trikes.
The A2 licence is the next step from an A1 license. It allows you to drive motorcycles with maximum cylinder volumes of 150cc, and maximum power of 35kW. You can also ride trikes and mopeds with this license category, however you aren't able to carry passengers.
How to obtain an A2 license?
There are a number of steps you must take to obtain an A2 license. You will have to pass a theory and practical test, as well as complete training. The training is expensive therefore it is worth searching around for the best costs. It is also important to prepare ahead and save money each month to help you pay for the course.
The A2 licence is great for those who are just starting out as it permits you to ride a motorcycle with a limit of 35kW (47bhp). You can now ride on motorways without having to display learner plates. You can also travel as passengers. It is important to note that you'll need to take the CBT again if you wish to upgrade to a A licence in the future.
To gain an A2 license, you first need to take the CBT course and then pass a Theory Test. You will also need to pass the Module 1 and Module 2 tests. The cost of the CBT and the Modules will be in the range of PS700. This includes the rental of a bike, the use of the appropriate helmet, jacket and gloves. You may also borrow the helmet and jacket from the school you attend the CBT course with.
After you have passed the CBT and Theory tests, you will then need to take an A2 Practical Test. This is the second phase of the test and it is more demanding than the Theory Test. You will need to demonstrate your ability to manage the bike on the road, which includes changing gears.
When you pass the A2 Practical Test you can ride any A2 category motorcycle or scooter. This includes 125cc motorcycles as well as larger bikes, such as the Yamaha MT-07 and Kawasaki Ninja 300. It is important to remember that although A2 motorcycles are quite fast, they must never be used at speeds that are excess of 70mph on motorways.
The A2 license is a popular option for beginners, as it provides a bridge between a 125cc moped and a motorcycle that has no limitations. A2 motorcycles are also cheaper to insure than their more powerful counterparts.
