Bedside Crib and Travel Cot
Bedside cribs look similar to a bassinet and are attached to the sides of the bed. Some have an end that can be adjusted to allow easy access, while others have an inclined design that is perfect for reflux babies.
MFM tester Georgina found the crib to be simple to assemble and the instructions were simple, resulting in an easy and quick build. It folds down to an extremely compact size and comes with a handy bag for travel.
Easy to put together
They are compact and easy to set-up, so they can be placed next to your bed. They are also lighter, making them more transportable. Georgina one of our MFM home testers, was extremely pleased with the Maxi-Cosi Lora crib for being "super straightforward to construct with clear instructions and simple zips." This crib can be used as a portable travel cot and comes with a handy bag. It comes with multiple mesh openings for ventilation and its height adjustable allows it to fit any mattress.
Some cribs with a bedside have the option of a side panel that could be lowered, giving you an easy access to your baby without having to get out of your bed. This is an excellent option for mothers who are breastfeeding or those who wish to remain close to their baby at night, but don't wish to risk co-sleeping.
Many models come with an integrated function that lets you to rock your baby. This can be a relaxing experience for your baby and aid them sleep. Some cribs feature a reclining position that can be beneficial in the case of reflux or colic. They should only be used under supervision. A doctor or health professional should be consulted prior to trying this position.
Many cribs for bed come with a canopy that protects your baby from sound or light. This can help in calming them down. Some come with a storage compartment underneath, which is great to store blankets, nappies, and other items for your baby.
Many bedside cribs are convertible into toddler beds or standalone cots. This is a major selling point for many families. MFM's 2021 Mother and Baby Awards winner, the Joie Roomie Go for instance, comes with removable side panels with conversion kits, as well as a tummy tilt, making it versatile enough for travelling. It also has five different height adjustments to match your bed, and was loved by our MFM home testers for being easy to put together and comfortable. It is also compact and easy to move around. The Graco Play Yard (also known as the pack and play) is a different favorite and was shortlisted for the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.
Cosy and comfortable
A bedside crib lets you to keep an eye on your child in the peace of your bed. It's a great option for a mom who is recovering from a c-section because you can easily pull baby out towards you to feed them or make nappy changes without needing to get out of bed. And the most cozy cribs come with mesh sides that you can view your baby through.
Some cribs let you lower the barrier completely. This allows you to sleep with your baby without any risk. (Make sure that the crib you choose meets the current safety standards). Others allow you to keep the barrier down but pop it back up after you've lifted baby out, which is better for parents who have fears of their baby falling off the side of their mattress.
The Luah was awarded the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket - is designed to clip onto bedsteads and divan beds, but does require some longer straps than some other models (check the specifications to make sure your bed can accommodate). The spacious design features an opening side panel and a patent-pending perforated bottom that creates air cushioning to increase air flow. There's an integrated setting for reflux as well as a 360-degree swivel to allow you to turn the crib to suit your baby's preferred position.
If you're seeking something smaller Tutti Bambini CoZee has oak legs with a variety of fabric options that fit in with your decor. It is also very easy to assemble. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was able to put it together quickly and without needing to consult any instructions. It's also a great travel cot, folding down flat and slipping into a convenient bag.
The Next2me Magic, which was shortlisted for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, is also somewhat larger, however it is still compact and easy to fit onto your bed. Georgina also found it easy to put together however she was disappointed that the instructions could have been more clear about the zips.
Easy to clean
Look for cribs that come with removable mattress covers that can be washed with the machine while looking at bedside cribs or travel cots. That will help you keep it clean from spills, nappies, baby sick and dribbles. It's important to choose a product that can be disassembled and partially dismantled, to allow you access to every nook and cranny to conduct an efficient cleaning and sanitising session.
This is vital, since it will ensure that all germs and dirt have been cleared away. It is also important to ensure that the sides of the crib are securely secured, ensuring that there are no gaps or areas in which your child could slide down or become trapped.
You'll also want to ensure that the crib is easy to clean and that it is a good fit for your bed. This is especially important when you're using a bedside crib that sleeps with your child. They are designed to fit securely to the side of the parent's bed, allowing parents to easily access their infant throughout the night to feed and comfort their baby while still ensuring separate sleeping areas.
Another thing to consider when selecting a crib for your bed is whether it has any additional features you might consider useful. For example, some have the ability to rock (useful for sleepers who are fussy) or tilt - but keep in mind that you should make use of this feature with caution because it could be dangerous if your child falls out.
You'll want to make sure that your crib or travel bed has a flat, firm mattress that fits snugly into the frame. This will decrease the chance of SIDS by making sure that your baby's feet and head do not slide into gaps or folds in the bedding.
It's a good idea purchase a new mattress for the crib or travel cot, rather than using one that was handed down or bought second-hand. Used mattresses are more prone to lose their shape over time, increasing the risk for SIDS. All cribs that are new must meet BS EN1130:2019. This is the most recent standard, which introduces stricter requirements to ensure safe and effective sleep solutions.
Versatile
The bedside crib, or co-sleeping mattress as it's sometimes referred to it is attached to the bed so that you can access your baby easily at night without leaving your sleeping space. They can also be used as a standalone crib during the daytime. Most will include a side panel that can be adjusted to lower, so that you can feel and see your baby. Some cribs let you keep the side panel down at night. This lets you be close and comfortable with your baby while taking care to minimize the risks of sharing the bed. Some cribs will also convert into a travel cot, or include additional features such as rocking, tilting (use with caution, remember to speak to your GP about this) or changing into an older baby cot or playpen.
The SnuzPod 4 is a consistently well-loved crib and it's not only about its sleek Scandi aesthetic. This model comes with six height adjustments, as well as a handy storage shelf. bedside cot 6 months plus 's also a little bit bulkier and heavier than other travel-friendly cribs we've tested and comes with a convenient bag to keep it clean and free of dust in storage.
The instructions are easy to follow and there's a useful toolkit to aid you. It's also simple to clean thanks to an easy-to-clean mattress cover and the breathable fabric. It comes with a few additional features compared to other cribs. These include an anti-reflux angle and a rocking feature and an storage compartment.
Jasmin says that this crib is wonderful because it is "easy to reach the baby during the night for fuss free feeding and is larger than the majority of Moses Baskets, so it will last for a longer period of time before my son is old enough to use it". She also loves that it's easy to clean and feels solid and well-made. It's even designed to fit on a divan, which makes it an ideal option for those who have limited space. Plus, it has a convenient carry bag to take along when traveling. A perfect all-rounder.
