However, nothing is known about the exposure patterns in passerine birds that are commonly present on farms where rodent control is conducted. We used liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to screen for residues of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in liver tissue of passerine birds that were present during rodent control with a product containing brodifacoum (BR). The 222 birds of 13 species were bycatch of rodent snap trapping in 2011-2013 on 11 livestock farms run synchronously with baiting. During baiting, ARs were detected in about 30% of birds; 28% carried BR. In liver tissue of 54 birds that carried BR, concentrations ranged from 4 to 7809 ng/g (mean 490 ± 169 ng/g). Among common bird species with AR residues, BR was most prevalent in robins (Erithacus rubecula) (44%) and dunnocks (Prunella modularis) (41%). Mean BR concentration was highest in great tits (Parus major) (902 ± 405 ng/g). The occurrence and concentrations of BR residues were about 30% higher in birds collected close to bait stations compared to birds collected further away. The results demonstrate that several ground feeding songbird species are exposed to ARs used on farms. If BR was present in liver tissue, concentrations were variable, which may imply a combination of primary and secondary exposure of songbirds. Exposure was mostly restricted to the immediate surroundings of farms where bait was used, which might limit the transfer to the wider environment. Although climate change is projected to increase growing season crop water demands, pest pressures, and have an overall net-negative impact on agriculture, the potential reduction in frost exposure and the accompanying water and energy costs to mitigate frost damages may allow growers to reprioritize some of their long-term decisions around farm management.Carbonaceous aerosols and gaseous pollutants emitted from wildfires play a crucial role in both the global climate system and regional air quality. Here, using multisource satellite and ground-based observations combined with reanalysis data, we investigate the three-dimensional evolution of biomass-burning emissions from a forest wildfire event in Liangshan, Southwest China, which occurred from 29 March to 1 April 2020. The meteorological field analysis showed that the negative anomaly of relative humidity and precipitation, as well as the positive anomaly of near-surface wind speed, created favourable conditions for the occurrence and spread of this wildfire event. During the fire, satellite observations suggested a maximum fire radiation power of over 100 MW. In addition, there were significant short-term effects of fire activity on regional air quality, with downwind surface PM2.5 concentrations at the Xichang site reaching a maximum of approximately 470 μg·m -3 on March 31. Driven by a southwesterly airflow, large amounts of smoke aerosols were transported rapidly to downstream areas, significantly deteriorating air quality, with the maximum value of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) exceeding 2. Moreover, the quantitative evaluation based on Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis showed that the instantaneous maximum values of the column mass concentration of black carbon (BC) and organic carbon (OC) reached 9.8 g·m-2 and 1.8 g·m-2 during the fire respectively. Further analysis suggested that the interaction between the lower and upper atmosphere constrained the smoke aerosols to altitudes below approximately 5 km, which was also supported by the vertical distribution of elevated smoke aerosols observed by the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP).More reliable assessments of nutrient export to surface waters and the Baltic Sea are required to achieve good ecological status of all water bodies. Previous nutrient export estimates have recently been questioned since they did not include the long-term impacts of drainage for forestry. We made new estimates of the total nitrogen (N), total phosphorus (P) and total organic carbon (TOC) export from forests to surface waters at different spatial scales in Finland. This was done by formulating statistical equations between streamwater concentrations and climate, soil, forest management and runoff variables and spatial data on catchment characteristics. The equations were based on a large, long-term runoff and streamwater quality dataset, which was collected from 28 pristine and 61 managed boreal forest catchments located around Finland. We found that the concentrations increased with temperature sum (TS), i.e. from north to south. Nitrogen, P and TOC concentrations increased with the proportion of drained areas in the catchment; those of N and TOC also increased with the proportion of peatlands.
