Maternal obesity has been linked to the development of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in offspring, but its relationship to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is unclear.

Through the nationwide ESPRESSO cohort study we identified all individuals ≤25 years of age in Sweden with biopsy-verified NAFLD diagnosed between 1992 and 2016 (n= 165). These were matched by age, sex, and calendar year with up to 5 controls (n= 717). Through linkage with the nationwide Swedish Medical Birth Register (MBR) we retrieved data on maternal early-pregnancy BMI, and possible confounders, in order to calculate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for NAFLD in offspring.

Maternal BMI was associated with NAFLD in offspring underweight (aOR 0.84; 95% CI 0.14-5.15), normal weight (reference, aOR 1), overweight (aOR 1.51; 0.95-2.40), and obese (aOR 3.26; 1.72-6.19) women. Severe NAFLD (biopsy-proven fibrosis or cirrhosis) was also more common in offspring of overweight (aOR 1.94; 95% CI 0.96-3.90) and obese (aOR 3.67; 95% CI 1 of fatty liver in their offspring.
In a study of all young persons in Sweden with a liver biopsy consistent with fatty liver, the authors found that compared to matched controls, the risk of fatty liver was much higher in those with obese mothers. This was independent of available confounders and suggests that the high prevalence of obesity in younger persons might lead to a higher risk of fatty liver in their offspring.
Inflammation is a serious global concern due to its debilitating symptoms, resulting in considerable suffering and lost productivity. This study aims to review and document the medicinal uses and pharmacological properties of southern African medicinal plants used for inflammation and pain-related ailments.

An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify southern African plants used traditionally to treat inflammation. A variety of ethnobotanical books and grey literature, as well as ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and Scopus sear active plant extracts have been tested against relatively few inflammatory markers and considerable further work is required.Steroids and insulin-like growth factors (Igfs) are indispensable for folliculogenesis and reproductive fitness in the vertebrate ovary. The intrafollicular redox balance is also of immense importance for ovarian follicles wherein low levels of ROS are being utilized for cell signalling and regulation of gene expression; its excess may interfere with normal physiological processes leading to ovotoxicity. However, the functional relevance of ovarian steroidogenesis in maintaining the follicular microenvironment with coordinated redox homeostasis and intra-ovarian growth factors axis is relatively less understood. Using zebrafish full-grown (FG) ovarian follicles in vitro, our study shows that blocking steroid biosynthesis with anti-steroidal drugs, DL-aminoglutethimide (AG) or Trilostane (Trilo), prevents hCG (LH analogue)-induced StAR expression concomitant with a robust increase in intrafollicular ROS levels. Congruent with heightened intracellular levels of superoxide anions (O2•-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), priming with AG or Trilo abrogates the transcript abundance of major antioxidant enzyme genes (SOD1, SOD2, and CAT) in hCG-stimulated follicles. Significantly, blocking steroidogenesis attenuates transcript abundance of HSP70 but elevates NOX4 expression potentially through ERα-mediated pathway. Importantly, disrupted redox balance in AG/Trilo pre-incubated FG follicles negatively impacts hCG-mediated activation of PKA/CREB signaling and transcriptional activation of igf ligands. Elevated ROS attenuation of antioxidant defense parameters and impaired endocrine and autocrine/paracrine homeostasis converge upon reduced p34cdc2 (Thr-161) phosphorylation, a reliable marker for MPF activation, and resumption of meiotic G2-M1 transition in hCG-treated follicles. Collectively, altered redox homeostasis in steroid-depleted follicles has a significant negative influence on GTH (LH) regulation of follicular events, specifically Igf synthesis, meiotic maturational competence and ovarian fitness.Neonicotinoids, which are widely used worldwide, including in Turkey, are an insecticide group that are synthetic derivatives of nicotine. Recently, they have attracted attention due to their toxic effects on non-target organisms, especially bees. Numerous studies have shown that neonicotinoids have been found in detectable levels in the environment and cause various undesirable effects on living organisms, including humans and other mammals. In this study, the possible toxic effects of imidacloprid and acetamiprid, commonly used neonicotinoids, are investigated by their pure forms and commercial formulations on HT-29 cells with individual and combined exposures. According to our results, imidacloprid and acetamiprid induced cytotoxicity by caspase-mediated apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, DNA damage, and oxidative stress under these experimental conditions. It is worth mentioning low doses of DNA damage, mixture exposure causes toxic effects at lower concentrations than individual exposure, and formulation groups are at the forefront of toxicity formation, though this varies depending on the parameters.Many muscid flies (Diptera Muscidae) are well-known as medical, veterinary, and forensically significant insects, thus correct species identification is critically important before applying for fly control and determining a minimal postmortem interval (PMImin) in forensic investigations. To date, a landmark-based geometric morphometric analysis of wings has proven to be a promising alternative technique for identifying many insect species. Herein, we assessed wing morphometric analysis for identification of six medically and forensically important muscids, namely Musca domestica Linnaeus, Musca pattoni Austen, Musca ventrosa Wiedemann, Hydrotaea chalcogaster (Wiedemann), Hydrotaea spinigera Stein, and Dichaetomyia quadrata (Wiedemann).
