Ceramic particle size affects the adsorptivity of particles toward ammonia. In this study, hollow fiber ceramic membrane (HFCM) was fabricated from natural zeolite via phase inversion. The effect of natural zeolite particle size toward the properties and performance of HFCM was evaluated. The results show that the HFCM with smaller particle sizes exhibited a more compact morphological structure with better mechanical strength. The adsorption performance of HFCM was significantly improved with smaller particle sizes because of longer residence time, as proven by the lower water permeability. A high adsorption performance of 96.67% was achieved for HFCM with the smallest particle size (36 μm). These findings provide a new perspective on the promising properties of the natural zeolite-derived HFCM for ammonia removal.Local pH is stated to acidify after bone fracture. However, the time course and degree of acidification remain unknown. Whether the acidification pattern within a fracture hematoma is applicable to adjacent muscle hematoma or is exclusive to this regenerative tissue has not been studied to date. Thus, in this study, we aimed to unravel the extent and pattern of acidification in vivo during the early phase post musculoskeletal injury. Local pH changes after fracture and muscle trauma were measured simultaneously in two pre-clinical animal models (sheep/rats) immediately after and up to 48 h post injury. The rat fracture hematoma was further analyzed histologically and metabolomically. In vivo pH measurements in bone and muscle hematoma revealed a local acidification in both animal models, yielding mean pH values in rats of 6.69 and 6.89, with pronounced intra- and inter-individual differences. The metabolomic analysis of the hematomas indicated a link between reduction in tricarboxylic acid cycle activity and pH, thus, metabolic activity within the injured tissues could be causative for the different pH values. The significant acidification within the early musculoskeletal hematoma could enable the employment of the pH for novel, sought-after treatments that allow for spatially and temporally controlled drug release.Ten banana (Musa spp.) cultivars were studied for their antimicrobial properties. Three plant parts (corm, pseudostem and leaves) were collected separately and extracted with different solvents, viz., hexane, acetone, ethanol and water. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) was evaluated using a broth microdilution assay. Eight human bacterial and one fungal pathogen were tested. Acetone and ethanol extract(s) often exhibited significant antimicrobial activity, while hexane extracts were less active. Ademetionine cost Aqueous extracts often showed microbial growth, possibly by endophytes. Leaf extracts were most active, followed by pseudostem, and corm was least active. All the tested banana cultivars were found to contain antimicrobials, as demonstrated by inhibition of selected human pathogens. Our results support the use of different parts of banana plants in traditional human medicine for infections, including diarrhea and dysentery, and some sexually transmitted diseases, as well as for packaging spoilable materials like food.Type 2 diabetes exerts a negative impact on sleep breathing. It is unknown whether a long-term improvement in glycemic control ameliorates this effect. We conducted an interventional study with 35 patients with type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to explore this. At home, sleep breathing parameters were assessed at baseline and after a 4-month period in which antidiabetic therapy was intensified. Patients who decreased their body mass index ≥2kg/m2 were excluded. Those with an HbA1c reduction ≥0.5% were considered good responders (n = 24). After the follow-up, good responders exhibited an improvement in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI 26-1 (95% IC 8.6-95.0) vs. 20.0 (4.0-62.4) events/hour, p = 0.002) and in time with oxygen saturation below 90% (CT90 13.3 (0.4-69.0) vs. 8.1 (0.4-71.2) %, p = 0.002). No changes were observed in the group of non-responders (p = 0.722 and p = 0.138, respectively). The percentage of moderate and severe OSA decreased among good responders (p = 0.040). In the wider population, the change in HbA1c correlated positively to decreases in AHI (r = 0.358, p = 0.035) and negatively to increases in the minimum arterial oxygen saturation (r = -0.386, p = 0.039). Stepwise multivariate regression analysis showed that baseline AHI and the absolute change in HbA1c independently predicted decreased AHI (R2 = 0.496). The improvement of glycemic control exerts beneficial effects on sleep breathing parameters in type 2 diabetes, which cannot be attributed merely to weight loss.
