05). These results indicate that BCM has great potential in the remediation of Cd- and Cu-contaminated soil.Cadmium (Cd2+), as the primary contaminant in Chinese soils, is dangerous to human health and ecological security. Invasive plant Spartina alterniflora in Chinese coastal wetlands presents a promising feedstock for biochar, which is an efficient adsorbent for heavy metal removal. S. alterniflora harvested in summer, autumn and winter were pyrolyzed to produce biochars. We analyzed the effects of harvest time and desalination of feedstock on biochar properties and Cd2+ adsorption capacity in aqueous solution. Biochars were characterized by pH probe, elemental analyzer, SEM, BJH, BET, and FTIR, and the Cd2+ concentrations were measured using AAS. Except pH (9.85-10.95) and nitrogen contents (0.71-1.59%), other biochar properties had no linear correlations with harvest time. Biochars produced from feedstock harvested in autumn had the highest carbon contents (73.25%) and lowest functional groups diversity (CC and -CHx). The pH and carbon contents (64.44-73.25%) were increased by desalination treatment. The surface area (0.48-2.27 m2/g), total pore volume (0.0015-0.0055 mL/g), mesopore volume (0.0015-0.0052 mL/g), and Cd2+ adsorption capacities (16.29-32.34 mg/g) were affected by desalination treatment, and the effects varied with harvest time. Biochars produced from desalted feedstock harvested in summer and untreated feedstock harvested in winter showed higher surface area, porosity, and Cd2+ adsorption capacity. Moderate salt contents (1.5-3.0% in chloride content) in feedstock promote the formation of biochars with higher surface area and porosity.Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), a widely used new brominated flame retardant, is added into flammable materials to achieve fire retardation. As it is continuously detected in the environment, it has become an emerging environmental pollutant. However, the effects of DBDPE exposure on oocyte maturation and its underlying mechanisms remain unknown. This study found that DBDPE exposure inhibited the rate of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD), first polar body extrusion (PBE) and fertilization of mouse oocytes. After 14 h of exposure to DBDPE, metaphase II (MII) oocytes showed that the hardness of zona pellucida (ZP) markedly increased and that the spindle morphology was abnormal. Moreover, DBDPE exposure induced abnormal mitochondrial distribution, mitochondrial dysfunction, and ATP deficiency. Simultaneously, DBDPE exposure down-regulated the expression of antioxidant-related genes (Sod2, Gpx1) and increased the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in oocytes. The results of immunofluorescence and qRT-PCR revealed that autophagy occurred in DBDPE-treated oocytes with high expression of autophagy-related protein (LC3) and genes (Lc3, Beclin1). Meanwhile, DBDPE significantly up-regulated the protein (Bax) and mRNA (Bax, Caspase3) levels of pro-apoptosis genes. However, the protein and mRNA expression of anti-apoptosis genes Bcl-2 was dramatically down-regulated in DBDPE-exposed oocytes. Collectively, DBDPE exposure impaired mitochondrial function, causing oxidative damage, autophagy and apoptosis in oocytes.Spray application is considered to be the most common method of insecticide use in apple orchard, while trunk injection has often be used in labor-intensive areas. Here, a comparison of both methods in aphid control efficiency and non-target effects was conducted. We evaluated the effects of thiamethoxam by either spray or injection on apple aphid Aphis citricola, and examined the temporal dynamic of thiamethoxam in leaves by using residue analysis. Results showed that thiamethoxam had a remarkable suppression effect on Aphis citricola, and both application methods had obvious control efficiency with the highest value above 90%. The control effect of spray method on Aphis citricola reached the maximum at 7 days after application, while that of injection method reached the maximum at 14 days after application. Moreover, the control effect of injection after 14 days and that of spray after 7 days were not significant, suggesting the spray method had a higher quick-acting effect than the injection method, and the two methods had a similar persistence effect. The population dynamics of non-target insects (ladybugs, parasitoid wasps and predatory bugs) showed basically the same as that of blank controlled. The control effect evaluation of thiamethoxam on Aphis citricola suggest that injection treatment was more effective in protecting natural enemies than spray treatment, and thiamethoxam didn't interfere with natural enemies to control Aphis citricola with both two application methods.Coming along with high water reuse in sustainable and intensive recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs), the waste products of fish in rearing water is continuously accumulated. Nitrate, the final product of biological nitrification processes, which may cause aquatic toxicity to fish in different degrees when exposed for a long time. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate the impact of chronic nitrate exposure on intestinal morphology, immune status, barrier function, and microbiota of juvenile turbot. For that, groups of juvenile turbot were exposed to 0 (control check, CK), 50 (low nitrate, L), 200 (medium nitrate, M), and 400 (high nitrate, H) mg L-1 nitrate-N in small-sized recirculating aquaculture systems. SLF1081851 molecular weight After the 60-day experiment period, we found that exposure to a high concentration of nitrate-N caused obvious pathological damages to the intestine; for instance, atrophy of intestinal microvilli and necrosis in the lamina propria. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis revealed a signid weaken the barrier function and disturb the composition of intestinal microbiota in marine teleosts, thereby harming their health condition.Contamination by organic and inorganic compounds remains one of the most complex problems in both brackish and marine environments, causing potential implications for the reproductive success and survival of several broadcast spawners. Ficopomatus enigmaticus is a tubeworm polychaete that has previously been used as a model organism for ecotoxicological analysis, due to its sensitivity and ecological relevance. In the present study, the effects of five trace elements (zinc, copper, cadmium, arsenic and lead), one surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and one polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (benzo(a)pyrene, B(a)P) on the sperm quality of F. enigmaticus were investigated. Sperm suspensions were exposed in vitro to different concentrations of each selected contaminant under four salinity conditions (10, 20, 30, 35). Possible adverse effects on sperm function were assessed by measuring oxidative stress, membrane integrity, viability and DNA damage. Sperm quality impairments induced by organic contaminants were more evident than those induced by inorganic compounds.
