Introduction Endoscopic spine surgery has become one of the representative minimally invasive spine surgeries (MISS), especially in the lumbar spine. Full-endoscopic procedures using a working channel endoscope for cervical degenerative spine disease have been reported as practical and feasible. This review aimed to summarize the updated techniques of and studies about cervical endoscopic surgery. Areas covered An extensive search of PubMed was performed for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or comparative cohort studies on the full-endoscopic cervical procedure. All the 236 articles found were screened and categorized. Only two RCTs and four cohort studies finally met the search criteria. Regarding the surgical techniques, there are four categories according to the approach method 1) anterior endoscopic cervical discectomy (AECD); 2) anterior endoscopic cervical transcorporeal decompression (AECTcD); 3) posterior endoscopic cervical foraminotomy and discectomy (PECFD); and 4) posterior endoscopic cervical laminotomy (PECL). Expert opinion Cervical endoscopic surgery provides comparable clinical results with MISS benefits, such as shorter operative time, less bleeding, and earlier recovery time. However, spine surgeons are not yet familiar with most of these techniques; moreover, supportive evidence is minimal. Technical evolution is still ongoing in an effort to make the procedure more practical.To determine if meconium fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) in rat pups is a good biomarker of prenatal exposure and effect to alcohol, three groups of pregnant rats were studied one control (pair fed) and two treatment groups given 25% alcohol at 2.2 or 5.5 g-1 kg-1 d-1. The pups were delivered on day 20 and, for each dam, were separated into a male and female group. The body, brain, intestines, and placenta of the pups were obtained, weighed, and stored at -20°C. The pups' intestines (as surrogate of meconium) from each group were pooled, and meconium was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy for FAEE. The meconium showed the following FAEE ethyl palmitate, ethyl stearate, and ethyl linolenate and were only found in the alcohol-treated group and with high specificity but low sensitivity. Mean body weight of the pups was lower in the treatment groups compared to the control groups. Ethyl palmitate concentration correlated negatively to the pups' mean body and brain weights. Therefore, ethyl palmitate, stearate, and linolenate, in meconium of rat pups prenatally exposed to alcohol, are useful biomarkers of prenatal alcohol exposure, with ethyl palmitate a good biomarker of adverse effect on the pups' body and brain weight.Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has uprooted our lives like never before since its onset in the late December 2019. In this review, we describe the association between patient age and COVID-19, epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children, psychological effects associated with lockdowns and school closures, and possible mechanisms underlying lower transmission rate of COVID-19 in children.Approximately 70% of advanced breast cancer patients will develop bone metastases, which accounts for ∼90% of cancer-related mortality. Breast cancer circulating tumor cells (CTCs) establish metastatic tumors in the bone after a close interaction with local bone marrow cells including pericytes and osteoblasts, both related to resident mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (BM-MSCs) progenitors. In vitro recapitulation of the critical cellular players of the bone microenvironment and infiltrating CTCs could provide new insights into their cross-talk during the metastatic cascade, helping in the development of novel therapeutic strategies. Human BM-MSCs were isolated and fractionated according to CD146 presence. Transwell migration assays were performed to establish whether primary breast cancer celtatic niche during the establishment of secondary metastatic tumors.Background Biochemical verification of self-reported smoking status is not common among the population eligible for lung cancer screening (LCS). Methods We used urinary NNAL (4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol and its glucuronides) and serum cotinine as the gold standard to determine the validity and reliability of self-reported smoking status from the 2007-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Results We found 2.3% (n = 652, equivalent to 5.3 million weighted population) of adults eligible for LCS according to the current United States Preventive Services Task Force guideline. Self-reported current smoking status performed similarly against NNAL and cotinine sensitivity [89.7% (95%CI 84.9%-94.5%) vs. 89.5% (95%CI 84.8%-94.3%)]; specificity [99.7% (95%CI 99.2%-100.0%) vs. 100% (95%CI100%-100%)]; positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were 99.8% (95%CI99.4%-100.0%) versus 100% (95%CI100%-100%) and 85.3% (95%CI 79.1%-91.5%) versus 85.1% (95%CI 79.1%-1.0%), respectively; and Kappa [86.5% (95%CI80.5%-92.5%) vs. 86.5% (95%CI80.6%-92.3%)]. Performance measures were better among females than males; worst among the non-Hispanic white and best among other race/ethnicity group. The validity and reliability of self-reported smoking status increased with increasing cutpoint levels of both NNAL and cotinine.
