ent populations. The available literature lacks information on the metabolic processes taking place in emu muscles after the cessation of circulation. learn more Hence, this study was undertaken to examine the physicochemical characteristics (pH, drip loss, WHC, TBARS, L*, a*, b*) with concomitant changes in protein expression patterns (SDS-PAGE) of femoral muscle (M. iliotibialis lateralis) that occur post mortem and during the first days (0 h, 24 h, 48 h) of its maturation in 1- and 3-year-old emus. Our results indicated that the interaction between emus age and storage time had significant impact on meat pH and all color indicators. Furthermore, we detected 24 differentially expressed protein bands, representing 22 different gene products. ClueGO pathways analysis revealed that these proteins were mainly involved in glycolysis/gluconeogenesis pathway, pyruvate metabolism and pyrophosphate hydrolysis-driven proton transmembrane transporter activity. Based on the results obtained it can be assumed that early post-mortem metabolism of emu muscle is predominantly based on the glycolysis as reflected by the relative abundance alterations of the glycogenolytic and glycolytic enzymes. Moreover, the energy supplies provided by ATP and other high-energy substances degradation is higher in the group of older emus. Our findings also highlighted the complexity of the molecular mechanisms underlying the conversion of muscle to meat.
Intelligibility, the ability to convey a message by speech, is one of the most important variables in speech-language pathology. The assessment of intelligibility is a challenge especially when it comes to spontaneous speech. The aim of the study was to investigate validity and reliability of a method for assessment of intelligibility, syllables perceived as understood (SPU); a method that is more time-efficient than previous methods based on transcription, as it does not require a master transcript for reference.
A group of 20 adult listeners transcribed stimuli consisting of spontaneous speech from 16 children (14 with speech sound disorder and two with typical speech and language development, age 44 to 81, M=60). Intelligibility was calculated based on these orthographic transcripts, as a) proportion of syllables perceived as understood (SPU) and b) proportion of syllables correctly understood (SCU), with reference to a master transcript. Validity was checked through investigation of the correlation an SPU might be used for assessment of intelligibility if the median from several listeners is used or when comparing results from the same listener over time. The SPU method might therefore be a valuable tool in a clinical and research context as a more valid option than rating scales and a more time-efficient method than the gold standard SCU method. However, it should be noted that the reliability of the SPU is not as high as for the SCU.
To examine the association between educational level and chronic kidney disease (CKD) among the Iranian population.
This is a prospective cohort study conducted in the framework of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study.
A total of 8173 Iranians (men=3659) aged ≥20 years were included in the study. CKD was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60mL/min/1.73m
. The association between educational status and CKD was explored using multivariate Cox proportional regression analyses, adjusted for age, gender, current smoking, marital status, body mass index, waist circumference, baseline eGFR, diabetes, hypertension, physical activity, history of cardiovascular diseases and dyslipidaemia.
During a median follow-up of 13.14 years, 2609 cases of incident CKD were identified; the corresponding incidence rate was 26.35 (range 25.39-27.34) per 1000 person-years. Compared to low educational level, middle and high educational levels showed lower risks for incident CKD in the crude model [hazard ratio (HR) 0.37 (95% confidence interval CI 0.34-0.40) and HR 0.40 (95% CI 0.35-0.45), respectively]; however, these HRs changed direction after further adjustment for age and gender [HR 1.26 (95% CI 1.14-1.39) and HR 1.40 (95% CI 1.22-1.61), respectively]. The increased risk of incident CKD for those at higher educational levels remained significant in the fully adjusted model. In addition, results from the gender stratified analyses were in the same direction as those found among the whole study population (P-value for interaction of gender and education >0.8).
Higher educational levels were associated with incident CKD during more than a decade of follow-up; this finding may be attributed to unhealthy lifestyle behaviours among this population group.

Between 2010 and 2020, Africa witnessed several outbreaks of Ebola virus disease (EVD), each presenting with varying case fatality rate (CFR) and other socio-economic impacts. This study aims to summarize the CFR and identify potential factors that influenced the severity of EVD outbreaks in Africa.
This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of EVD outbreaks published between January 2010 and March 2020, using Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases.
Only English-language articles and reports, including the number of cases and deaths during the outbreak in Africa, were considered. The quality of the included articles was assessed using Murad's quality assessment tool. The analysis was conducted using Stata (version 12), pooled effect sizes were calculated using the random-effects model, and heterogeneity was tested for using the I
statistic.
Thirteen studies with 32,300 cases and 13,727 deaths were identified, whose pooled CFR was 60% (95% confidence interval [CI] 47-73%). The most EVD-affee early detection and prompt control of future outbreaks.
Higher leptin and lower adiponectin levels have been linked to progressing systemic inflammation and diseases of aging. Among older adults with obesity and an inflammatory conditions, we quantified effects of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation on leptin, adiponectin, and the leptin-to-adiponectin ratio (LAR). We also examined associations among adipokine and cytokine levels.
Using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design, participants (mean age 61.3±2.1) received 1.5g EPA+1.0g DHA (n=14) or mineral oil (n=18) daily. Plasma adipokine and cytokine levels were quantified by electrochemiluminescence at all study intervals.
While no between-group differences were detected, there was a reduction in the LAR (by 23%, p=.065) between weeks 4 and 8 among the EPA+DHA group. Adiponectin levels were negatively associated with IL-1β levels at week 4 (p=.02) and TNF-α levels at week 8 (p=.03).
Potential benefits of EPA+DHA supplementation among aging populations warrant further study.
