Class A and Class E Driving Licenses in New York
No matter if you're an experienced trucker or an eager teenager who's about to take the wheel for the first time, knowing the different types of licenses is vital to your success. As a driver's education teacher, I have helped people from Buffalo and Montauk get through the test of knowledge and skills.
Class A is for single vehicles that have a higher GVWR than 26,001 pounds, and combinations of vehicles up to the legal weight limits, depending on endorsements.

The CDL class A is the most extensive and permits drivers to drive any combination of vehicles with a gross combined mass rating (GCWR) that is 26001 pounds or more which includes the towing capacity of a vehicle that weighs more than 10,000 pounds. In general, this is the license needed by truck drivers who want to haul cargo across the nation or between states.
Truck driving is a thrilling career option however, it can be a bit challenging. If you're looking to work as a professional driver it is important to know the different types of licenses to be able to select the appropriate one for your requirements.
A CDL can open up a wide range of careers, from local delivery services to long-haul trucking. There are even special endorsements for driving busses or transporting dangerous materials. These specialized endorsements to your license may require additional knowledge tests and skills tests.
To be able to qualify for a class A or B license, you must pass a written and driving test. You must also pass a physical test to prove that you're physically fit enough to drive trucks.
It can be confusing to know the different types of CDLs. However, they're used to distinguish between drivers and their duties. To determine which type of license is right for you, talk to an expert at All-State Career. They'll be happy to discuss the differences between licenses and what they mean for your driving career. Class B License
You need a CDL to operate an automobile that transports goods or people. There are various types of CDLs and the type of license you need depends on what kind of vehicle you are operating. There are three main classes of commercial driver's licences: Class A, Class B, and Class C. Each has a specific scope of operation, training and testing requirements, as well as endorsements.
Class A CDLs are required by drivers who operate combination vehicles, which combine two or more trucks and trailers to create one gross vehicle weight of more than 26,001 pounds. This includes large delivery trucks, buses, and most passenger-carrying vehicles. In order to obtain a class A CDL you must complete extensive on-the-road and classroom training and pass a comprehensive test of your skills. You must be at least 21 to travel across state lines and most trucking companies will not hire drivers who are younger than 21.
If you wish to obtain a class B CDL you'll need to complete less intensive classroom training and on-the road training. You must be at least 18 or 21 according to the state's rules for driving across state lines. In addition to meeting state requirements, you must also have an impeccable driving record and pass a medical exam to confirm that you're healthy enough to drive safely. A class B CDL has less endorsement options than Class A. However, you are able to get a hazardous materials endorsement, a school bus endorsement, or a passenger endorsement.
Class C License
The Class C driving licence or Commercial Driver's License, allows drivers to operate passenger vehicles as well as small trucks that can transport hazardous materials. It's important to know that the naming conventions and requirements for different classes of CDL can vary from state to state, therefore it's crucial that you understand the distinctions and what they mean for your professional career.
This is the final of the three major classifications of CDL which includes everything that A and B do not - in other words, if you want to drive any single vehicle that has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of up to 26,000 pounds, or any vehicle towing a trailer that is not more than 10,000 pounds that is, you must possess a Class C CDL. This can include passenger vans and buses as well as smaller hazardous vehicles, like those that transport medical supplies.
In terms of endorsements Class C drivers are able to add a range of options that enhance their driving capabilities. If you are a member of an emergency, rescue or fire department can obtain a permit that allows them to drive in their official capacity. This is a fantastic option for those who want to work in the emergency services industry as it permits them to make their living doing something they love.
