How To Get Better Results With Your Large Bedside Cot
Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also referred as bassinets or co-sleepers are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their infants at night without the risk of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months, after which your baby is ready to be moved to an actual cot.

Mehack is an MFM home tester, was awed by the fact that this model features an adjustable bassinet that can be used all around the house. It also comes with an option to rock manually. It was also easy to put together and came in its own travel bag for convenient storage.

Size

Cots and cot beds vary in size in size, with cots smaller than cot beds. They also often convert into toddler beds, whereas cot beds are generally only used for up to three years. older. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard, which can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. Choosing the larger one is a good option when you want your child to sleep in it until the age of +/- three.

MFM mum home test Jasmine loved that the bedside cot was a little bigger than the Moses basket but not too large for the space of her baby's. She says that it is easy to lift the baby into and out of the cot for night feedings or soothing and that it's quality is superior to others she has seen that are flimsy.

Another home-based test subject, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is It's a bassinet that lifts off that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also has an option for inclining the reflux and a machine-washable breathable liner. And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib, or Moses Basket. Unlike some International or European cot brands, the Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy a new mattress as your baby grows. However, it requires a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). Here you can find the ideal mattress for your cot.

Height

When selecting a bedside crib pick one that can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It must also be lower to a level that is not in the way so that you can pull your baby towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is especially helpful if you're recovering from a C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to the maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch can be adjusted to 70cm.

It is also important to consider the height you would like the bottom of your crib to be. While Cots For Tots find it easier to get their babies out of the standard Moses baskets at the smallest height, other mums prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. One of our testers for mums stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It comes with a collapsible side you can push at the press of a button.

Be aware that a bedside or bassinet device should only be used when your baby is able to hold his head up without assistance, which is usually at around 6 months. This is because of the risk of being suffocated. Be aware that if your child is old enough to be able to convert a bassinet/bedside sleeping system into a cot, they will need to take the sides off as soon as they are able to do so. This will stop them from climbing out or falling out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of styles of bedside crib that range from basic to luxurious. Some of the most extravagant options include features like an integrated light, a soothing center that plays music and sound and has two levels that help to soothe your baby back to sleep, or an adjustable footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child in order to feed them. You may also find some models that can be transformed into the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to move to a larger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example was awarded Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards in the Best Cot Moses Basket or Crib category. It features a swivelling bottom that lets you pick up your baby and transfer them to the opposite side of the crib without getting out of bed. This makes it ideal for new mums who are recovering from Caesarean births or who require the bed for extended durations of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying that it was easy to use and made reaching her baby easier particularly after her c-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which has won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and is equipped with a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and rocking function. It's a bit bigger than some of the other cribs for bed we've tested but it folds flat in its travel bag so it's relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mom home test Leya also liked the functionality of this bedside crib, explaining how it was designed with babies and parents in mind. It is easy to move and super-sturdy. She also said that the bassinet's swivelling base was fantastic because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for moms who are recovering from c-sections.

Safety

The most important security characteristic of a bedside cot is that it is able to be raised or lowered to enable parents to reach their baby when they require to feed them, comfort them or change their nappy. This makes it perfect for mothers who are recovering from the c-section. Look for a design that lets you lower one side with the press of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby without needing to get out of the bed. This is important, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You'll also want to avoid adding anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation or injury, such as pillows and duvets. These could cause babies to become overheated.

The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product problems that included gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing parts (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of imposing additional requirements for sleepers in bed, such as the requirement that these beds satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at the very least, meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. However, the CPSC determined that these requirements would not be practical or effective in reducing the amount of instances in which infants were entrapped between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that can be converted to other types of use, such as bassinets and play yards. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different provision to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside sleepers that would permit them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that can be removed. The attachment can be permanently fixed or disconnected when the product's not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule that is expected to come out in November 2021.
