Buying a Bedside Crib For Travel
The dimensions of this crib are perfect for mums. It's larger than the Moses Basket, but smaller than a Cot Bed. It can also fold down to just a quarter of its original size and fit into a handy bag for traveling.
Remember that the crib is only for sleeping. Toys, pillows and blankets can suffocate a child.
Safety
When you are shopping for a travel cot ensure that the manufacturer is adhering to all safety standards. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) website is an excellent place to start. It will inform you whether a crib for portable use has ever been removed from the market. Choose a mattress that fits your baby's crib so it won't slip through the gaps or pose an suffocation hazard.
Find bassinets or cribs that meet the updated safety standards of 2022. Avoid older cribs and cribs that have been modified for travel, or cribs with drop-sides. These cribs haven't been tested and could be a danger to your baby's safety.
A travel crib needs to be sturdy and well-constructed. Check for missing, loose or broken screws as well as other hardware. If you're using a playard, it should have sturdy walls and mesh windows to ensure adequate air circulation. The slats on the crib should not be more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart to keep baby's head and legs from getting trapped. Don't put any toys, blankets, or toys in the crib. These items can choke or drown your baby. They should be removed at the time they are able to stand independently or before the age of 5 months.
It's also important to check frequently for loose or broken hardware and screws, especially when traveling with your infant. Make sure you remove all crib furniture before use, as well.
If you are using a portable crib be sure that it's not placed in front of the large windows. Windows pose a fall risk and if your baby rolls into it, they may get injured. It's best to keep your baby's room away from windows, even when they are old enough to roll over. If your baby starts to roll over during sleep, it's a good idea awake them to prevent injury.
Portability
Portable cribs (or playards, as they're sometimes called) are a great option for those who are going on vacation, having family members over, or simply wanting an appropriate crib during a sleepover or with friends. These foldable contraptions include a comfortable mattress that can support babies up to 15kg. They are easy to assemble and compact when closed.
The BabyBjorn Travel Crib is a fav among MFM home testers, who appreciate the fact it can be folded and stored in a few minutes and that its simple drop-down panels that can be operated with one hand are easy for even bleary-eyed parents to use. It's not the lightest pack-and-play on our list, but it's a good weight at just a little over 15 pounds. It has regular carry handles instead of an e-bag strap, which some prefer to haul around.
The Joie Kubbie Sleep is another excellent option. It incorporates a bedside bassinet as well as a crib into a compact unit. This is ideal for long-term stays and holidays with family and friends. It's not the most affordable option however it has many features, such as an organizer basket and calming night lights that change colour as well as lullabies and white noise to aid your child to fall asleep.
It's also easy to clean, with wipeable and machine-washable fabrics. It's also, despite its size and weight (it's on the heavier side when opened) it's surprisingly light at less than 12kg. It can easily fit into a compact, practical travel bag that comes with it ideal for trips away from home. It comes with six height settings that include the tilt of the tummy for reflux/colic babies, and can fit beds of all sizes. It's also very simple to set up. Our MFM tester was able to do it in only 10 minutes. It will require a separate mattress.
Feeding
Whether traveling to work or for pleasure it's crucial to ensure your baby is comfortable and safe on the road. While some families might be attracted to use a bassinet or crib that they already own but it's better to purchase one specially made for travel. They are smaller and come with mesh sides, which allows parents to observe their baby without disturbing them. They are also lightweight and can be easily transported between places. They also meet the safety standards of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and haven't been subject to recalls.
If you must use a crib next to your bed it is recommended you place your baby on their back. The bed should be free of blankets, pillows and stuffed toys. Sharing a bed with parents isn't recommended for any baby, regardless of age, and this type of sleeping with a partner is associated with an increased risk of SIDS. If you have to sleep with your child on occasion, ensure that you only do so while your baby is asleep and you are completely dressed and awake.
There are many types of cribs for babies and newborns.
Some are designed as a mini-crib or Moses basket while others have sides which can be placed on parents' bed. This allows parents to reach their infant at any time during the night to soothe and feed their child, and avoid the dangers of co-sleeping. The AAP warns against this due to the danger of suffocation. Examples include the Arm's Reach Clear-Vue Bassinet, an infant bed that is attached to the side of a mattress for a parent. This is a great option for older children since the sides can be raised to allow you to reach the baby without having to lift them out of the bed. Another option is the travel cot with an integrated bassinet that can be removed from the top of the crib, which makes it easier to raise the sleeping infant to feed or care.
Sleeping
Bedside cribs let you co-sleep safely with your baby. They are placed near your bed at night, so that you can reach over easily for night feeds and observe them without disrupting their sleep. Some cribs have drop sides that you can lower to make this easier, and others have an adjustable height adjustment so that they will be able to fit in your bed at home or when you are away.
In the past, it was suggested that infants sleep in their own bedroom. However, parents are increasingly preferring to co-sleep. This arrangement, also known as rooming in, allows infants to remain close to their parents, while being separated from their own crib or a bassinet. There are a variety of co-sleepers, such as the iCrib, an iCrib-style portable crib that can be able to sit on the top of a bed, or a crib. It has a light frame and a mattress that can be removed and it folds up for easy storage. The Joie Roomie Go crib is another option. bedside cots for newborns cots4tots attaches to the bed edge and has 7 height positions, and a tummy-tilt for reflux and colic. The crib was highly well-received by our MFM home testers for its user-friendly design and compact folding. it is also available in a variety of colours.
There are also freestanding bedside cribs like our Lilly or Alain that you can put on top of an existing bed frame. These have a movable side barrier that can slide down to allow you pick your baby up for evening feeding, however the crib is self-contained, and your child will be sleeping comfortably throughout this time. These models meet the new BS EN1130:2019 safety standards that require a 120mm gap between your mattress and child's crib.
Lastly, there are cribs for travel that are specially designed to be used on the road. They tend to be smaller and lighter than standard cribs, which makes it easier to move them in and out cars and hotels. Munchkin Brica, for example can be put together in less than one minute and folded down in three pounds. It is therefore simple to move and lift.
