How Bedside Crib Co Sleeper Impacted My Life The Better
Is a Bedside Crib Co Sleeper Right For Your Baby?

If you're looking to keep your baby close for the night without any fuss A crib that is positioned at the bedside is the ideal choice. Co-sleepers are a safe alternative to traditional Moses baskets. They are based on strict guidelines for safe sleep from the Lullaby Trust, NHS and other organizations.

Home testers love that this crib rotates 360deg for easy access and features an adjustable mattress height to fit your bed. It is easy to fold and comes with a travel bag.

Safety

Bedside cribs let you keep your baby close at night without fear of being suffocated. They attach to your bed, so you can reach out and comfort or feed your child in the middle night. They're also great for mothers recovering from having a c-section. There's plenty to think about before you invest in one.

When you're looking for a bedside crib make sure you're looking at a model that complies with current safety standards. A lot of cribs older than that were recalled due to the risk of strangulation or entrapment posed by the gaps between the mattress, the sides and the crib. Check that your chosen model is compliant with the new BS EN 1130:2019 safety requirement which was introduced in November 2020.

The biggest change in the new rules is that bedside cribs can not be made with completely drop-down sides. Instead, most models feature 'half-height' walls that still allow your baby to lie close to your bed, but provide a more protective barrier by sinking a bit lower than the mattress. All of the models in our list comply with these new requirements which includes the Graco Pack 'n Play on the Go and the Chicco Lullago, which were both shortlisted in the Mother&Baby Awards 2017.

It's also worth checking if the crib you're considering is secure enough to be attached to your bed and is anchored properly. This is especially important if you intend to use the crib with a sidecar sleeping system like the Graco Pack 'n Play On The Go or the Graco BassiNest Premiere which were both shortlisted for the Mother and Baby Awards.

It's also important to keep in mind that the crib should be used only for sleeping and should never be used with any bedding or other accessories, like blankets, pillows toys, or stuffed animals. The official safe sleep guidelines from the Lullaby Trust and the AAP is that babies should sleep in their own sleeping space, in their own crib or cot and not on an adult bed or any other type of mattress or soft furnishings.

Comfort

A crib that is placed near your bed lets you keep your baby close by throughout the night, without the danger of bed-sharing which can increase the risk of SIDS. You can also reach over to comfort your baby without having to get out of bed during the middle of the night. It's a good alternative to a Moses Basket or infant bassinet that's safe, convenient, and comfortable for your newborn baby and infants up to 6 months of age.

The most effective models have good airflow, with slats that are open and wide enough to allow air flow. You can also move the door or window according to your needs. It is easy to change your baby's diaper and nurse them or examine their sleep at the end of the night. Some models come with a swaddle bag to aid in creating a safe sleeping routine.

You'll want a mattress that is lightweight and compact when folded, so it's easy to move around your home or transport to your destination. It must also be easy to clean, with an easily washable and removable mattress cover. The pocket at one end can be used to store spare diapers and baby clothes.

Some bedside cribs come with a mattress, while others need to purchase separately. Make sure the mattress is designed specifically for your model and is firm, flat and airy. Avoid second-hand mattresses since they could increase the risk of SIDS.

Find a crib that has an adjustable height to ensure that it is in line with the height of your bed. Especially if you're recovering from C-section surgery, a bedside crib that has an adjustable height can give you a better chances of getting in and out of bed easily particularly in the early weeks when you're still healing.

Certain models come with additional features that can be useful, such as tilting the tummy for reflux, or the ability to detach to make a moses' basket and later a toddler playpen. Other features to consider include whether the crib rock and folds down so that it can lie flat for storage, or comes with a bag for travel. It's also worth determining the cost of the crib and the bedding included. It's not uncommon to purchase separate sheets for your baby's crib.

Style

Bedside cribs are a fantastic alternative for mothers who are just starting out. They allow mothers to keep an eye on their baby during the night and during diaper changes without getting out of the bed. They are also a great way to help babies settle after a c-section or when recovering from other medical conditions such as colic or reflux.

The ideal bedside crib will depend on your lifestyle and preferences. Apart from the obvious safety features, you should consider whether you'd like to be capable of lifting your child out of the crib to feed them or soothe them and if it includes any additional features, such as rocking functions. Also, consider the size and the height of your bed and ensure that the crib you choose will be able to fit comfortably.

Bedside cribs tend to be more affordable than Moses baskets However, don't let that fool you they're still loaded with amazing features, including the breathable mesh and clear sides, incline options for reflux and an adjustable height. The Tutti Bambini CoZee is our favourite, as it combines both style and practicality into the perfect co-sleeper. It's available in three colors and comes with stylish oak legs, so it's sure to fit in your bedroom. Plus, it's easy to put together and fold, and comes with a handy bag for trips to visit the grandparents.

Some cribs feature side panels that can be lower during the day, allowing the baby to be held and sleep in a safe manner and then raised at night. This feature is available on the Arm's Reach Clear View Co-Sleeper for instance, however one of our MFM Home testers found it difficult to use initially.

You should ensure that the bedding you choose for a crib beside a bed is properly fitted. There shouldn't be gaps or other openings which could cause the suffocation. This is why a lot of cribs have mattresses that are fitted, but sheets that are suitable for use at most retailers. Avoid mattresses that are second-hand as they can become worn out and become worse with age increasing the risk of SIDS.

Bedside cribs are also much lighter and portable than Moses baskets, making them easier to move from room room or carry during holidays. The best bedside cribs are small enough to fit in bags, so you can easily bring them to short trips.

Convenience

Bedside cribs let you observe your baby without having to worry about them falling off the mattress or becoming suffocated. It's important to note that official safety guidelines for sleep from the Lullaby Trust and NHS recommends that you only sleep in a bed with your baby for the first six months with a separate bed in the same room, to lower the risk of SIDS.

The model you pick the bedside crib could come with features that make it more convenient. For instance one of the top-rated models we tested in our MFM home tests can swivel and adjusts its height to make it easy to reach in and pick up your child. This model also has a sidewall that dips down, which one MFM home tester reported gave her "easy access" to soothe their infant.

Some models have extra features like a rocking feature (great for babies who are fussy), or incline settings to help with reflux. These may be handy to have if your baby suffers from a condition that causes reflux but remember that your newborn should sleep on a flat, firm mattress to avoid suffocation and overheating.

Consider how easy it is be to clean the model. Check whether the fabric can be washed by machine and if there's a waterproof mattress protector, which will protect from leaky nappies, infant sick or dribbles. Some cribs with a bedside have a fitted sheet that makes it easier for you to change it and wash it.

Consider bedside cot used of assembly and the compactness when folded. Make sure it's easy to attach to your bed and whether it comes with a bag to take it with you on your travels. Additionally, take note of whether it has additional features like a tummy tilt or the possibility of turning it into moses baskets for older children - this could be helpful for travel.
