Homeless shelters are a high-risk setting for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission because of crowding and shared hygiene facilities.

To investigate SARS-CoV-2 case counts across several adult and family homeless shelters in a major metropolitan area.

A total of 1434 study encounters were done in shelter residents and staff, regardless of symptoms.

The primary outcome measure was test positivity rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection at shelters, determined by dividing the number of positive cases by the total number of participant encounters, regardless of symptoms. Sociodemographic, clinical, and virologic variables were assessed as correlates of viral positivity.

Among 1434 encounters, 29 (2% [95% CI, 1.4% to 2.9%]) cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were detected across 5 shelters. Most (
= 21 [72.4%]) were detected during surge testing events rather than routine surveillance, and most (
= 21 [72.4% CI, 52.8% to 87.3%]) were asymptomatic at the time of sample collection. Persons who were positive for SARS-CoV-2 were more frequently aged 60 years or older than those without SARS-CoV-2 (44.8% vs. 15.9%). Laparoscopic approach for malrotation has become more popular for neonates and in cases with volvulus, but its safety and efficacy remains controversial. This study reviewed laparoscopy outcomes in neonate/infant malrotation.

Medline/PubMed and Lilacs databases were reviewed. Data from studies published in English/Spanish between 1995 and 2019 were collected. Results are presented as percentages and means/medians; logistic regression was used to study possible associations.

Nineteen papers offered 99 neonates/infants with median age and weight of 10.5 days and 3.5 kg, respectively. Ladd's procedure was performed in 95 (96%) patients and bands' division in 4 (4%); appendectomy was not included in 16 (16.2%) patients, and cecopexy was not performed in all cases. Volvulus was reported in 39 (39.4%) patients. There were 11 conversions (11.1%) and 10 recurrences of symptoms (10.1%) that required reintervention. An association was found between volvulus and recurrence (
= .05) and the need for conversion (
< .01). There were 10 (10.1%) minor complications and no mortality. The median follow-up was 10 months.

The devastating impact of the current opioid overdose crisis has led to new involvement of law enforcement officers. Training programs have focused on overdose recognition and response without targeting core attitudinal change by covering addiction or harm reduction principles.

This study examined the impact of a comprehensive overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) training on officers' attitudes toward overdose victims, knowledge of and competence to respond to an opioid overdose, and concerns about using naloxone. The training included the common information about overdose recognition and response, with added components covering broader content about addiction and harm reduction principles and philosophies.

A total of 787 (83% male) officers were administered surveys before and after attending a 2.5-3 hour comprehensive OEND training. Survey items measured overdose-related knowledge and attitudes, including attitudes about people who use drugs and who overdose.

Following the training, pzed drivers of negative attitudes (e.g., risk compensation beliefs), some officers' attitudes worsened after the training. Randomized experiments of different training approaches would elucidate the mediators and moderators underlying these unexpected responses.Objective Current racial mental health disparities among African American women have been attributed to chronic experiences of race-related stressors. Increased exposure to racism in predominately White spaces may increase reliance on culturally normative coping mechanisms. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychological distress, perceived racial microaggressions, and an obligation to show strength/suppress emotions among educated, middle-class African American women. Design A sample of 243 African American women aged 19-72 years (M = 39.49 years) participated in an online study. Participants completed self-report measures of psychological distress (PHQ-8 and GAD-7), racial microaggressions (IMABI), and modified items from the Stereotypical Roles for Black Women (SRBWS) to assess an obligation to show strength/suppress emotions. Factor analyses were conducted to assess the reliability of the obligation to show strength/suppress emotions subscale in our sample. Descriptive statistics, multiple linear regression, and mediation analyses were also conducted to examine variable associations.
