Cooked cured ham is a ready-to-eat food that is popular among consumers. Stored temperature has a key effect on the quality and shelf life of ham. In this work, the quality changes and shelf-life prediction of cooked cured ham stored at different temperatures were investigated. Sensory evaluation, physical and chemical indicators, and aerobic plate count were determined. Results showed that high storage temperature of cooked ham accelerates quality deterioration. Partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis based on the variable importance for projection identified nine important variables for predicting the shelf life of cooked cured ham. Compared with either PLS or back-propagation artificial neural network, the hybrid PLS-back-propagation artificial neural network model better predicts the shelf life of cooked cured ham by using the nine variables. This study provides a theoretical basis and data support for the quality control of cooked cured ham and a new idea for research on the shelf-life prediction of cooked cured ham.
Canopy light interception determines the amount of energy captured by a crop, and is thus critical to modelling crop growth and yield, and may substantially contribute to the prediction uncertainty of crop growth models (CGMs). We thus analyzed the canopy light interception models of the 26 wheat (Triticum aestivum) CGMs used by the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement project (AgMIP). Twenty-one CGMs assume that the light extinction coefficient (K) is constant, varying from 0.37 to 0.80 depending on the model. The other models take into account the illumination conditions and assume either that all green surfaces in the canopy have the same inclination angle (θ) or that θ distribution follows a spherical distribution. These assumptions have not yet been evaluated due to a lack of experimental data. Piceatannol solubility dmso Therefore, we conducted a field experiment with five cultivars with contrasting leaf stature sown at normal and double row spacing, and analyzed θ distribution in the canopies from 3-dimensional canopy reconstructions. In all the canopies, θ distribution was well represented by an ellipsoidal distribution. We thus carried out an intercomparison between the light interception models of the AgMIP-Wheat CGMs ensemble and a physically based K model with ellipsoidal leaf angle distribution and canopy clumping (KCell). Results showed that the (KCell) model outperformed current approaches under most illumination conditions and that the uncertainty in simulated wheat growth and final grain yield due to light models could be as high as 45%. Therefore, our results call for an overhaul of light interception models in CGMs.
To examine the association of maternal bone markers [sclerostin, soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (sRANKL), osteocalcin, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3] with fetal intra-abdominal and subcutaneous adipose tissue deposition and birthweight during normal pregnancy.
One hundred pregnant women (aged 30.4 ± 5.6 years, mean ± SD) with prepregnancy body mass index = 24.1 ± 4.6 kg/m2 were seen prospectively during each trimester. At each visit they were submitted to anthropometric measurements, a fasting blood sampling, a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test, and a fetal ultrasonogram. At birth, neonates had birth weight measurement.
In the second trimester, maternal sclerostin concentrations correlated positively with fetal abdominal circumference and birth weight; maternal sRANKL concentrations correlated positively with fetal abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness, sagittal abdominal diameter, and abdominal circumference. Fetuses born to mothers with greater (>254 ng/mL), compared to fetuses born to mothers with lower (≤254ng/mL), sRANKL concentrations had greater abdominal circumference, sagittal diameter, and abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness. Maternal serum sclerostin concentrations were the best positive predictors of birth weight. In the third trimester maternal sclerostin concentrations correlated positively with fetal sagittal abdominal diameter; maternal sRANKL concentrations positively correlated with fetal abdominal circumference and fetal abdominal sagittal diameter.
Maternal bone markers sclerostin and sRANKL may relate to fetal intra-abdominal adipose tissue deposition through as yet unknown direct or indirect mechanisms, thus contributing to birthweight.

These models are key components in pest control strategies in the context of global warming and in the development of sustainable production integrating agroecological concepts. Phenological models are mainly based on outlining the relationship between temperature and development rate. In this study, we investigated the combined effect of protein content within the diet (artificial diet; artificial diet with -20% protein; artificial diet with +20% protein; natural quinoa diet) and temperature (12, 16.9, 19.5, 22.7, 24.6°C) as drivers of the development rate. Our study supports the literature, since temperature was found to be the main driver of the development rate. It highlights the significant role played by protein content and its interaction with temperature (significant effects of temperature, diet, and diettemperature on development time using GLMs for all foraging life stages). We discuss the implications of such drivers of the development rate for implementing and applying phenological models that may benefit from including factors other than temperature. While performance curves such as development rate curves obtained from laboratory experiments are still a useful basis for phenological development, we also discuss the need to take into account the heterogeneity of the insect response to environmental factors. This is critical if pest control practices are to be deployed at the optimal time.
