14 Smart Ways To Spend Extra Large Bedside Cot Budget
Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to snuggle with their infant at night without the risk of SIDS. However they are not recommended for use up to 6 months of age when your baby is required to move into a cot, or a moses basket.

Mehack Mehack, an MFM home tester, was awed by the fact that this model has a bassinet that can be used throughout the home. It also has the ability to rock manually. It was also simple to put together and came with its own travel bag for convenient storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However they are typically used for children up to the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - large and standard, which can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. Selecting the larger one is a good idea for children who want to sleep in it until they reach approximately three.

Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried the product at home, was pleased the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for her baby’s room. She says it's easy to get her baby in and out for night feeding or soothing, and that the quality is great, compared with many she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.

Emily, another home tester, loves the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi lora which is a lift-off, mobile bassinet. It also rocks. It also has a reflux incline and a machine washable liner that is breathable. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Unlike some International or European cot brands The Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase a new mattress as your baby grows. It will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.

Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed, look for one that can be raised to a height that is comfortable for feeding your baby. It must also be able to be dropped down so that you can pull your baby up towards you during night feedings or to soothe. bedside crib with wheels is especially useful in the event of recovering from C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to a maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their infants from their standard Moses baskets when the base is at the lowest point, while some prefer a higher elevation to give them greater stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular option with one of our mom testers saying that it comes with a simple collapsible side that is easy to press down at the touch of one button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device should only be used until your baby can hold their head without assistance, usually at around 6 months. This is due to the possibility of inhaling suffocation. Be aware that when your child is old enough to convert a bassinet/bedside sleeping system into a cot, you must take the sides off when they are ready to do so. This will prevent them from falling out or climbing out of the bed.

Design

There are many different styles of cribs for beds that range from basic to lavish. Some of the most luxurious options include features like an inbuilt light or a center of calm that plays music and sound and has two levels to help ease your baby back to sleep or an adjustable footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child in order to feed them. Certain models can be converted into an infant bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.

For example the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air which was awarded Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that lets you pick up your baby and move them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get out of bed. This makes it ideal for new mums who are recovering from Caesarean or need to stay in bed for longer durations of time. Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried this product at home, stated that it was simple to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby, especially after a c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It is machine washable and comes with a interior, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's slightly larger than the other cribs that we've looked at, but it folds flat into its bag for travel, so it is relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mom home test Leya also liked the functionality of this bedside crib, explaining how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It is lightweight and easy to move. She said that the swivelling bassinet base was a great idea since it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to make access easier, especially for new mums recovering from c-sections.

Safety

The most important safety characteristic of a bedside cot is that it can be easily moved up or down to allow parents to reach their baby when they require to feed, comfort them, or change their nappy. This is why it's perfect for mothers who are still be recovering from a C-section. Look for a design that lets you lower one side with the push of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby up without getting out of bed. This is particularly crucial as your baby grows older and more mobile. Do not add anything that may increase the risk of injury or suffocation, such as pillowcases and duvets, which can cause your baby to become overheated.

The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues that include gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).

In special info looked into the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance, these products would have to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. However, special info determined that these requirements are not practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents in which infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the incidents reported in the NPR included multi-use bedside beds that can be transformed into other types of equipment, like bassinets or play yards. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different provision to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside sleepers that would allow them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that can be removed. This attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to be released in November of 2021.
