Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents rest with their baby at night without fear of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months, after which your baby will be ready to move to a cot.
Mehack Mehack, an MFM home tester, was impressed by the fact that this model has an integrated bassinet that can be used all around the home. It also comes with the ability to rock manually. It was also simple to assemble and came in its own travel bag for easy storage.
Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However cots are generally used by children up to the age of three. If you're looking for a wooden cot, you'll find two sizes to choose from that are large and standard both of which will convert into a toddler bed or cot beds. If you wish for your child (or children) to be capable of sleeping in the larger cot, it's a good idea to pick the larger size.
Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried the product at home, said she liked the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for her baby’s room. She says it's easy to carry her child into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or calming and the quality is top-notch in comparison to other cots she's seen that feel flimsy.
Emily who is a home-based tester, is thrilled by the flexibility of the Maxi-Cosi lora that is a portable, lift-off bassinet. It also rocks. It also has an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable liner that breathes. It was also shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora is compatible with a South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means you don't need to buy a brand new mattress when your baby grows. However, it will require an exclusive bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.
Height
When selecting a cot for the bed choose one that can be raised up to a height that's comfortable for feeding your babies. It should also be able to be lower to a level that is not in the way so that you can pull your child towards you to feed them at night or to soothe him. This is especially useful when you're recovering from a C-section. For example, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
You should also consider the height you would like the bottom of your crib to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their children from standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher elevation to provide them with more stability. One of our testers for mums said that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It comes with an easily collapsible side that you can press at the touch one button.
Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device is only suitable in the event that your baby can hold his head without assistance, which is usually about 6 months old. This is due to the possibility of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to know that if you opt for a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can be converted into a cot, you will need to begin removing the sides once your child is able to do this to ensure they don't get out of bed or fall out of bed.
Design
There are a variety of cribs for beds, ranging from simple to lavish. The more expensive options could include features such as a built-in nightlight and a calming centre that plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibration to help soothe baby back to sleep, or the swivelling base which allows you to easily reach your child for feedings. You may also find some models that can be converted to the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both) which is ideal when your child is ready to transition to a bigger bed.
For instance the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, which won Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that allows you to pick up your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean births or who require bed for longer durations of time. Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried this product at home, said it was easy to operate and made it easier for her to reach her baby - especially after the c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It has a machine-washable interior, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's larger than other cribs we've tested, but it folds down into its travel bag, making it a small size when not in use.
MFM mum home test Leya also appreciated the function of this bedside crib explaining how it was designed with babies and parents in mind. It is lightweight and easy to move. The swivelling base of the bassinet is amazing as it means you can move the bassinet from side-to-side and one of its sides can be let down to make access easier - particularly for new mums who are recovering from C-sections', she said.
Safety
The most important safety aspect of a large bedside cot is that it is able to be adjusted or moved to allow parents to reach their child when they require to feed them, soothe them, or change their nappies. This makes it perfect for mothers who are recovering from an C-section. You should choose an option that allows you to lower the bed's side by pressing a button. bedside crib travel allows you to raise your child without getting out of bed. This is crucial, particularly as your baby grows and becomes more mobile. You'll also want to be careful not to add anything to the crib that could increase the risk of suffocation or injury, like pillows and duvets. These could cause babies to become overheated.
The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues that include gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance they would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets or at least the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants are entrapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.
The majority of the incidents covered in the NPR included multi-use bedside beds which can be converted to other modes, such as bassinets or play yards. Several commenters suggested the CPSC add a second clause to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside sleepers that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using a removable attachment. Attachments can be permanently fixed or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet for babies.
The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November 2021.
